I was still in my Mama's belly

I never really dated in the american sense of the word.. I don't remember anymore for Purple Rain. I do remember getting tickets to opening night for Under The Cherry Moon with a friend, but after I bought them they released the movie a week earlier, so I was in the theatres in the second week. The place (the main amsterdam cinema, Tuschinski) was not even half full, and it already had moved to the smallest screen they had, Tuschinski 6, at the time.

Come to think of it.. I've never taken a date to the movies.

I went alone to the Purple Rain premier in Seattle, but I had all of my Prince pins (about 2 dozen) on the left side of my jacket and was quite popular with the other folks in line who wanted to see them, so I wasn't really alone. Saw UTCM with my friend. Saw Graffiti Bridge with my niece.

Nobody. I didn't know anyone that really liked Prince back then so I went alone.

For Purple Rain it was a friend at the Hopkins Theatre. When we walked out I was ecstatic and he was completely unmoved.

For Cherry Moon, it was Prince and his entourage as I worked at the Knollwood Theatre in St. Louis Park and Prince and his group were in the theatre for opening night!

I was not allowed to go see PR when it came out! I was 15 but still


for UTCM and SOTT it was my brother! (and then with my SO and friends to see SOTT at the Midnight Movies a few times)

GB: I think I went alone the first time then when it came to my Post (in the middle of the Pacific) I went and saw it with most of my Platoon.

The after I took my honey to see PR...

Same here; went to see Purple Rain and was mesmerized--didn't need anyone. But, I did take take people to my multiple theater viewings later on...

Man! Talk about bringing back memories. It was this chick who I met hanging out in Georgetown one night. She went to Wilson High School here in D.C. Her name was Piya pronounced (pie-yah). We made out in this pizza joint that used to be right there behind the #30 bus stop at Wisconsin and M Streets NW. It had an upstairs area with some secluded spots...ahem. (Can't remember the name of the place but they had great gyros too) Like a week later we met up with another couple at the Tenley Cinaplex Odeon across the street from Armands Pizza for the premier of Purple Rain. She kicked me to the curb that same night after the movie! LOL A one hit wonder so to speak. Never saw her again.

Um.....well, I went to see them with my mom. Hey--I was 14 when Purple Rain came out--I wasn't getting in that theatre without an adult, and it was 100 miles away from my house (I couldn't wait until it got to where I actually lived). The last part still applied for Under the Cherry Moon, which never made it to my home town, and I saw that one with mom, too. She liked both of them, which for an Ozark mountains white woman born in 1928 is saying something. I actually first saw Graffiti Bridge with her too, but that wasn't until it came out on video (I was in college by that time, but I don't think it ever played in the town I went to school, which is where I saw the first two films). She didn't think it was very good, strangely enough.

They weren't dates so much as worshipping at the altat of...Prince was a big thing in South Wales back in 1988!

Ah but "Graffiti Bridge" I did in style -- Prince on the big screen, finally. I managed to convince my dad to take me. The only part he liked was Mavis Staples' big number.

Saw PR with my boyfriend. He asked me to go to a cabin in the woods that weekend. I said only if they're showing Purple Rain somewhere around there.

I think I made up for it though by watching it for the first time with my son--his first time, too--and we really enjoyed it as a light comedy for the most part until the "death scene."

When I first saw UTCM back in the day the ending didn't really bother me much. But post 4/21/16 it sure packs a wallop, eh?

Well, I actually saw it before then...but no, I REALLY don't care for it now. Funny, how Prince insisted that scene be in the movie...

It sure was! The audience applauded like crazy! Word got around Prince was in the house.

He actually used to frequent the Knollwood Theatre and they'd make special accommodations for him and his entourage. Eddie Murphy was known to have gone there with Prince at least one time.

Both times I went with my homies. A group of about ten of us went to see Purple Rain, and a group of five of us went to see UTCM. For the record, my best friend and I went to see Sign "O" the Times at the $1 theatre after we had seen it at the regular theatre. While it was at the $1 theatre, we saw it sixty times in thirty days, watching the 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. showing. After the tenth day, the theatre manager stopped charging us the $1 as long as we purchased popcorn. Then, after the twentieth day, he stopped making us pay for popcorn. So, for the last ten days of the showing, we saw the film for free with a free bag of popcorn. FYI, I saw Graffiti Bridge alone. I couldn't drag anybody to see that flick with me. Still, I enjoyed it.

Damn, that sounds like me going to see Purple Rain at the dollar theater when I moved to another state! LOL They didn't show Sign 'O The Times any where near me unfortunately...
