Diffuser's song today is Cream and its a great write-up but how can anyone (including Prince) state that it did not have obvious sexual double entendre. Hell, in the video he looks like he is dry humping a lady. Its kind of brilliant how prince did this. He wrote lyrics with obvious sexual over currents and then when he went clean, he did not have to abandon the song because its true meaning (as a pick- me-up/personal morale booster when he was getting ready to fight for chart success again) could then be exploited. Smart move. After all, people get off on sex and success often to the same degree.

You should do your homework on this tune. Read the lyrics, and listen to Prince tell his own story about it.

OMG, do you just skim my posts for words to have knee jerk reactions to and ignore the rest of the content. I have done my homework and I did acknowledge that "cop" also means take or steal, that Prince did state that the song was a morale booster for himself (I didn't mention the looking into a mirror while writing these lyrics story but I knew it as well) .

But a song called cream in which he sings lines like get on top, you will cop, and don't you ever stop, while dry humping a girl in the video...is unreasonable to assume on first listen that he was shortening the word 'copulate' to 'cop'. Can we give Prince enough credit to realize that he knew what connotations a song like that would have. Hell, there is female moaning at the beginning of the song. The message of that song may have not been sex, but it is surrounded with obvious sexual imagery and sounds.

I never stated otherwise. I understand that get on top meant cream rises to the top. But it is called double entendre for a reason. Its like the song started as just a bunch of phrases about doing your thing and getting stronger and its your time, and then someone said cream rises to the top and then Prince's sneaky little brain said to itself "Let's play on that and everyone will think its a dirty song and then cream will rise to the top when I get a hit." LOL.

It definitely is. Every line's 'You're...' until the chorus. Add that there, it's 'You're the cream – get on top'.

I think Prince said during an acoustic set that he wrote this song looking in the mirror. I see it as a song about how awesome he is. He is the "cream" that rises to the top. He's basically talking to himself for the whole song, telilng himself he has the horn so blow it, nobody better, everything you do is success, make the rules and break them cause you are the best, etc. etc. It's like the greatest, most narcissistic song of all time. I'm not saying that's bad, I freaking love that song, but that's what it is. Prince could back it up.

Oh and yes, he couched it in sexual double entendre, because he was Prince - everything was filtered through sex!

I don't attribute it to just narcissm. ITs so OTT that its more of a morale booster someone says to himself before going out there to risk getting his head pummeled in (So to speak). Like an older boxer looking at himself in the mirror saying he's the best ever before going out in the ring with a younger fighter. Prince knew he had rap and hip hop and younger artists to go up against (plus his older more acclaimed music). He knew he was in for a fight. He was going to show them and he was going to do so with a song that sounded dirty but with a reminder to folks that he was still in the game.

Right. That's it. I wasn't trying to only attribute it to the narcissistic piece. It definitely has the pep-talk element. But it's supremely confident pep talk. And coming shortly after Daddy Pop, it makes sense. Daddy Pop is him basically saying "I'm the shit, Michael Jackson ain't got nothing on me." It fits the theme, as much as there is one, of the album.
