Always found it interesting the fact that when you google Hurricane Annie which was one of the worst in American history you also get Hurricane Camille which was also one of the worst storms in American history too

There was a tropical storm Anna in 1969, the same year hurricane Camille killed a dozen people in a church: https://en.m.wikipedia.or...ane_season

The 1935 Hurricane that devastated Florida is sometimes referred to as Hurricane Annie. Here are some links I found:

Anna is not Annie.

You know why they had female names?
Because, when they come it's hot and wet. When they're gone, you've lost the house and the car... lol

While he may have been referring to Annie Christian, Prince also was not one to repeat himself that often (or imitate past works - you know he always talked about moving forward).

I put my vote in on the side of the lyric worked and it gave you the vision of someone watching the local newscast that day ... "In our top story tonight, Hurricane Annie made landfall today and destroyed Mt. Zion Baptist Church during worship service, 23 dead. In other news, local gang wars claimed another life this afternoon".

Nonsense. He used the name Annie simply because it fit with the melody of the song; it could just as easily have been hurricane Harry, but hurricanes traditionally have female names. Some people really read too much into things.

I always had more of an issue with the 'we'll call him Nate' line - I always thought that was such a dummy lyric, like Prince couldn't think of a better line.

As much as Prince sang about/alluded to spiritual things, it seems more plausible to people that the choice of lyrics were random and simply related to a random made up news story vs SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy interpretation?

The first ever Category 5 hurricane on record to hit the United States. At least until Hurricane Camille in 1969. But, all of the references tht I find to it, don't mention names in the articles, but it is called Hurricane Annie. It probably should have a "b" name since it was the second hurricane of that year.

Where did I hear/read that "Nate" was short for NATIVITY...as in, "Let's fall in love, get married and have a baby" because the world is going to end, and our child may be the savior? I swear I'm not making this up, just dont remember where i saw/heard it...

Make it so, Number One...

"Nate" is also definitely short for "Nathan."

People will always appropriate interpretation to lyrics that the writer might not have thought of--some agreeable thumbs up! grouphug , others not so much omg disbelief doh! . Like NorthC suggests we can all beleive whatever we want to. At any rate, this kind of discussion can be pretty entertaining!

biggrin popcorn

I'll take the straight interpretation of this lyric--news flash on a natural disaster; hard times all around. I'll assign a more mystical/metaphorical interpretation to songs like "The Rainbow Children."

I think he is referring to Annie Christian from Controversy. She is portrayed as the Antichrist in the song and represents the Metaphorical ills of the world. He is representing Annie as a Hurricane doing harm to the house of God, typical actions of the Antichrist.

Whether you're right or not (we'll never know) your interpretation makes total sense, but most importantly i like it a lot.
