What luvgirl said^^^^^

What luvgirl is esp important if the audience here is young and gen x forward, it is important to the whole scope that you get the beginning right and that beginning starts or at least takes off with Vanity/Denise Matthews. It would be like leaving out Mary in the story of Jesus. All of us gen X and before were there so we know the deal an can argue who was the greatest love. Your gonna have to read about it so this is our civil rights movement we are fighting for you so you know the history. " learn, teach, repeat!!!!!"

Ummmm....no. Anything as it relates to Prince begins and ends with Prince. HE is the main reason he became what he did. While there were others closely connected to the success of his journey, Prince ultimately was the catalyst. And, are you actually comparing Vanity's importance as it relates to Prince's story and comparing her to Mary's relevance "in the story of Jesus"? Seriously? Oh, come on....

Nope just saying that story of Vanity has to include prince and the story of prince needs to include vanity accurately, just like the story of Jesus needs to include the Mary.

That's what I was questioning too. Prince is the one and only one who made himself into the star that he was. I agree with NotACleverName, it didn't start with V and didn't end with V. Prince was Prince before there ever was a V.

In my opinion his stardom and Vanity collided at the same time. I am not saying she made him into who he was I'm saying that his popularity and their "togetherness" collided at the same time and were part of the rocket ship star machine picture. I am assuming that is why rolling stone chose HER for the cover with HIM.

Rolling Stone chose her? Again, no. It was Prince's photo shoot....Prince chose her. HIS stardom was his. Others were just along for the ride and were responsible for their own trajectory.

He may have been bestowed by God with the gift of music but ultimately, it was up to Prince to use that gift to it's fullest potential.

I qualified it with "at least takes off"

Well, the qualifier is not relevant either. Prince's career took off because of Prince. PR (I'm presuming here; however, it appears this is your reference point of "taking off") was a success because of Prince. The music, the movie was Prince.

Responding to your "the bestowing was the start"....yes, it was. And Prince made it clear that he realized the value of the gift/giver. That still does not negate Prince's role in his story. HE was responsible for nurturing that gift, for developing that gift, for bringing it to fruition. The associates could have been anybody. Prince was Prince.

You lost me with the Gayle Chapman comment.

Hummmm way back up top, my point was that I agreed with luvgirl's post
And my initial comment was in support of telling the history of prince in an accurate manner to include everyone and not show deference to one over the other.
So perhaps the banter has muddied that, that is what I mean and meant.

How did the "banter" muddy this comment (in your reply #23): "....it is important to the whole scope that you get the beginning right and that beginning starts or at least takes off with Vanity/Denise Matthews."? I didn't question your entire statement. I specifically addressed the text in red.

Every single one of my replies has addressed this specific statement of yours. I was not confused in the least about your affirming luvgirl's statement and your fervent desire to set the record straight. Nope. Not at all confused.

You don't care to expound on your Gayle Chapman comment?

Whole scope meaning his whole history from birth to death.
"Start" meaning The start of the Vanity period to perceived end of the Vanity period. Since we were discussing Vanity I assumed (wrongly) that that was inferred as the period in discussion. Just like the start of the Revolution
Period and it's perceived ending, if it weren't accurately represented in a book I would find that worthy of discussion.

Don't you want it straight too? It is a book thread after all.

Guess I'll stay confused about the Gayle Chapman comment then? Do you even know what your comment meant?

nuts So you throw stuff out there, that has nothing to do with the convo, and when questioned about the Gayle Chapman reference, you still don't answer??

I kinda think you like to stir the pot, and make claims that you can't back up.

Sorry I threw it out, no one got it or at least 2 didn't, so I decided it was best to stick with the larger debate.

Now I'll go back to my placidity.

Touré's book is good. It's got some dodgy factual moments (forgetting which songs are actually on Controversy vs. Dirty Mind for example) and I don't totally agree with his thesis but at least it has a thesis. It's part of a larger conversation about where Prince fits in in the world and it's worth considering if you're at all interested in pop culture in a broader sense and not just famming out or looking for a factual blow by blow account of his life. It's not a biography at all though.

It would be like leaving out Mary in the story of Jesus. All of us gen X and before were there so we know the deal an can argue who was the greatest love. Your gonna have to read about it so this is our civil rights movement we are fighting for you so you know the history. " learn, teach, repeat!!!!!". If you are going to be the voice of your generation and declare this topic your civil rights movement, great....knock yourself out. However, you're probably going to have to do a bit more work than continuously chastise, on an internet forum, those who have written about it. It is becoming tedious.

Guess I'll stay confused about the Gayle Chapman comment then? Do you even know what your comment meant?

Gonna take your sign off advice. Enjoy your day.

"Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence....." ~ DESIDERATA ~ Max Ehrmann

You might consider reading the entire prose poem...it is stunningly beautiful and thought provoking. Also, it will bring into focus the overall message Mr. Ehrmann is attempting to convey. There is also a line that states: "Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story". So, I try.....
