how far can this PURPLE shit go?? The Red House/Purple House thing (for the Hendrix album) has me kinda and everyone keeps saying he always "smells of lavendar..." Is that his scent of choice b/c the shit is purple?? :X I mean DAMN, if he never utters the word "purple" or sings PR ever again in life, he'll always be associated w/ that color no matter what. So he can relax already, don'cha think? Will he ever give it up?
I must be bored w/ this bullshit...

I like the fact that Prince's use of Purple and his symbol even now, show that it wasn't a gimmick back in the 80's like eg.Madonna's religious-symbolism and George Michael's entire career ********************************************

I'm fine w/ the symbol but it seems like he's trying too hard to put his stamp on shit w/ the Purple House song. I find that irritating...

I'm fine w/ the symbol but it seems like he's trying too hard to put his stamp on shit w/ the Purple House song. I find that irritating... Yeah but you know if he just left it as "Red House" people would be like whoa! red's the new purple? I remember when Sign of the Times came out, and everyone was like "Peach is the new purple yall!" Then when Diamonds and Pearls, they were like "Now it's yellow!" He digs it all and has long moved on to other colors and patterns, but Purple and Paisley are always gonna be linked with him even though he is not as fixated on them as it may seem. COLOR THE EDIT PURPLE. You think? I mean, don't we KNOW by now that purple will ALWAYS be in his... erm, heart? Plus the song is CALLED Red House - fans need an asskicking if they can't understand that! I remember when Sign of the Times came out, and everyone was like "Peach is the new purple yall!" Then when Diamonds and Pearls, they were like "Now it's yellow!"

which gimmick do you mean? She definitely played on religion, at the start of her career. She's not as overtly religious as she was circa eg.'Like a Prayer'. I think most people would probably agree the video of that song, was partly for shock value. Also, circa 'Ray of Light' she really played on her new found buddism. I know she has learned things from buddism, but she completely manipulated it, dressing up in videos like 'Frozen' and tattoing herself etc. George Michael's entire career with Wham! was a sham. It bears no relation to the person, he really is. That is the point, I was making about Prince. He has no reason to continue to use the colour purple and symbol, but he does anyway ********************************************

It is a bit much. Since both his 1999 album and tour and the PR album/movie/tour he'll forever be known for the color purple - even he has said the Purple Rain album will always be his albatross.
The fans who aren't necessarily Prince fans know when you say "Purple Rain" it's a PRINCE song and movie. Bill friggin Walton brought up Purple Rain on an ESPN broadcast, said he'd gone to one of the concerts, and his colleague knew who he was talking about, Walton didn't even have to mention Prince's name, but his partner had the gall to say that even people in Minnesota don't claim Prince. Since Prince complains about people changing certain aspects of his songs when they cover them (and he has that right) shouldn't he be mindful of not halfway changing Jimi's title - regardless of the permission from Janie Hendrix? He wore a purple trenchcoat, he wore purple boots, he had a purple house. After 20+ years we GET IT, NELSON, YOU LOVE PURPLE!!! This post not for the wimp contingent. which gimmick do you mean? She definitely played on religion, at the start of her career. She's not as overtly religious as she was circa eg.'Like a Prayer'. actually, she's more religious now. if you're talking about imagery, that's one thing. but she wasn't religious at all back then, but she is now I think most people would probably agree the video of that song, was partly for shock value.
of course that was the intention. "pay attention to me, get outraged, and then sit down and think about it." Also, circa 'Ray of Light' she really played on her new found buddism. I know she has learned things from buddism, but she completely manipulated it, dressing up in videos like 'Frozen' and tattoing herself etc.
Kaballah, actually (or however it's spelled) George Michael's entire career with Wham! was a sham. It bears no relation to the person, he really is. That is the point, I was making about Prince. He has no reason to continue to use the colour purple and symbol, but he does anyway
i still don't see what these things have to do with each other. neither person is tied to them, in any meaningful way. somebody took a picture of me in a blue shirt at Xenophobia. does that mean that in the world's mind, I & Blue go together? no. that's just what i felt like wearing that day. now, if i were to wear a blue shirt every day of my life, sing several songs about the color blue, paint my house blue, etc., then they might have a point (ie, Prince & purple). but the other examples don't really have the same connection to the artists you mention

All I'm saying is the 80's was really a time of dressing up and impressing people. Stars like George Michael would really go to town on stage and create personas that weren't at all connected to their real characters. Nowadays, they don't at all resemble their 80's image. However, Prince is still persisting with things like the symbol and the colour purple. This suggests to me, that they really do mean something to him, as opposed to eg.Madonna's Kaballah or Michael Jackson's Oxygen chamber. ********************************************

Jimi had Purple Haze in '66 or '67
Stevie had a song called Purple Raindrops in the sixties on one of his early albums. America had a line about purple rain in the song Ventura Highway in the seventies. Hopefully when Prince goes to the big casino they won't have a purple casket and a lavender headstone. I guess it could have been worse. Warner Brothers could have owned the rights to the color purple. (Not the book or movie, the actual color purple.)

I get a feeling that "PURPLEHOUSE" is gonna put
P right back in the spotlight... People are gonna eat that CD up... Maybe that's Y he demolished the actual PURPLE HOUSE in MPLS...he don't need no more stalkers showing up in MPLS...there's enough there already. Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Alicia Keys re-named HCUDCMA "How Come You Don't Call Me" and also altered the lyrics a little in parts. It's a pride thing in wanting to bring your own vibe to the song instead of a direct copy...

I think his thought-processes involve a high degree of synesthesia.
I mean - what is "Purple Rain" anyway and why does that gibberish chorus upset me so much? I like the way he has appropriated Purple.
