Pick a SINGLE any Single?? Well I have been thinkin about this 4 a while ... I remember way back when ... Prince released Gold Experience and COME came out close behind ... I aways thought Prince could have picked better singles 4 radio air play ... Maybe 319 or Billy Jack Bitch over Eye hate U / or Papa or Pheremone or over Lettigo ??? I guess my question is do U think Prince Picks the wrong songs 4 singles ... If so do U think it affected some of the sales of the 90's 2000+ releases ... and If so what singles would U pick ... just wondering what the FAMS think ...Peace Love and Continous Sex 2 ALL ...

No, I don't agree with your choices. I think Letitgo and Eye hate you were the obvious choices as singles. Besides, he usually only releases singles to promote albums. So 319 would not have been a good ad for The Gold Experience.

"Dolphin" did so well on radio and MTV over here. People
really liked the song. And that's when the confusion began. it was all over the radio and mtv yet it wasn't in stores and no one knew if it would be released and when. I'm convinced that if it had been released same time as the vid and when it shipped to radio, it would have been a massive hit. Especially right after the success of the MBGITW single. Things might have ended up quite differently in that 1st half of the 90's for him if he'd had another huge hit. "P Control/319" as double A-side single. I remember that alternative stations back in 1995 played "Endorphinmachine" absolutely to death over here. It could have worked as a single. It took too long before anything was released then and when "I Hate U" finally came out, radio still picked it up but it wasn't the best choice. The songs they pulled off "Come" were pretty nice but as singles they didn't do that much. They should have at least had a video to go along with them. The Universal love remix was very nice. The electronic version of "Come" could have done well on the charts, I'm sure. Even "Pheromone" would have done better than "Letitgo". and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Hey Muffin!!
Funny, this is something that has got me every time. I mean, when TGRES was released I just remember thinking "Shit, not ANOTHER ballad!". I don't know why he pursues this method of releasing a slow-jam first, but that's all he has done for the last decade. Confusing, as all his up-tempo songs did amazingly well. SOTT, BatDance, Kiss, Cream, Thieves in the Temple, Alphabet Street, you all know what they are. It just seems that, since TGE, he has always led off with a ballad and effectively killed any potential momentum. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

I actually remember downloading TGRES and b4 i pressed play I was praying it wasn't a ballad... and woddaya know! I really does frustrate me. As u say every album before TGE there woz the hard hitting, up tempo, go 4 the jugular single first. Then after that some1 somewhere figured that TMBGITW was number1 coz the UK loved ballads. Ballads were released first everytime after that. Sometimes a ballad would be released in the UK while an uptempo track was released elsewhere! It's... in a word... PANTS! ----------

The Emancipation single choices were shit, why release that
many new songs and make your first single a cover??? "In This Bed Eye Scream" and "Sex In The Summer" would have been great singles

Eye Hate U was a great choice for single. 319 would've been a great follow-up.

He does have a habit of picking singles that only certain stations(mostly R&B) will support. His music is like a cross between soul & poprock. These stations will not play anything unless it's hot & they know it will sell. In Prince case he does things his own way now. On Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic I think Hot Wit U should have been the 1st single instead of TGRES. Eve wuz the hot female rapper at the time. The song would have done better than TGRES. The only problem was that the company did not push the album, they left that to him. He actually did MTV'S TRL. That was a low point...it showed desperation.

As hot as Eve was then, Interscope would not have allowed that song to finish her career.

i tend 2 agree withthe person who said he releases slow jams way 2 much.rave needed hot wit u 2 start a fire.emancipation could have came with style as a single.trc should have 1+1+1=3 AS A SINGLE. videos 4 each could have played a major role stickman

i don't agree with his choice of singles either. Rave could have been a bit more successful if he released "so far, so pleased" or "baby knows", maybe even "hot wit you". TGRES was a poor choice as an initial single. it would have been better after 1 or 2 other danceable/catchy song.
He hasn't had a hit in the states since TMBGITW. That's partly because of the contempt between prince and the industry but also partly due to the songs released as singles. "Come On" was a great choice but no one played it anyway. I think we just need to realize that the industry sticks together and if you go against them they kind of blacklist you. It happens to actors too. If you don't play by their rules they will try to not let you play at all.

As much as I love 1+1+1=3 it's a little too sparse they don't hit the hook in that song enough,it's more of a groove already, but if u look back why were "She's Always In My Hair" or "Erotic City" or "Good Love" or "17 Days" never singles? or on albums for that matter
