Does one have to "earn" being a die-hard fan?

There are many here who have witnessed Prince's concerts in the 1980s, who there to witnessed history. There are some here who have also witnessed history during the 1990s, at Prince's Love4OneAnother concerts. And then there are those who were present during the Celebrations. But for those who didn't experience any of this, do you believe they have the right to be called a "fan"? Is being a Prince fan more than just enjoying the music, or does the experience have to include the full spectrum, concerts, etc. If you've experienced more than others, do you think you're better than those who haven't experienced anything? And for those who didn't experience much, do you believe that you'll never have what it takes to be a true die hard fan? If you've missed out, does it mean that you're not qualified to really understand Prince and his music? As for me, I never saw any 80s concerts, my first concert was in '93. I've seen almost every concert since then, and I have a lot of bootlegs. But does it really matter? I guess you can probably tell by now that this is a stream of conscienceness post (no, I don't think I'm Rdhull biggrin). But should it be enough to love the music, and know what's good, rather than having been present at every show? I'll admit, I'm asking this question because, sometimes I don't feel as if I've "earned" being a real Prince fan. Do you believe I should feel this way? I welcome any criticisms, comments, etc.

Well, I think anyone who really likes/understands the music can be considered a "die-hard fan".

'Cause when it comes to Prince, at the end of the day, it all comes down to the music.
Now for all the people who have gone to concerts and such(like me), they're lucky, but I don'tr think that's what makes you a "die hard"

IMHO.

It ain't all about the benjamins,
but about the importance of Prince's music to you.

Who's the bigger fan...
Mr Loaded, who's bought everything Prince has ever
done, and been to all the concerts, and still has
change to buy a new sports Car?

Or Mr Minimum Wage, who's got 'most' of the albums
secondhand, and last year finally saved enough to
go and see Prince live for the first time?
.

I've only been a Prince fan for four years, and since I live in Australia, I havn't seen him live yet. However, most of my money goes on Prince music, of which I have around 90% of the official stuff now (the other 10% is deleted). So I do consider myself a die-hard fan, and if I lived in the US, I'd see him live as often as possible.

I think Mr. Minimum Wage will certainly appreciate seeing Prince live and listening to the music a lot more that Mr. Loaded, because he has had to work hard to be able to afford to see and hear him.

I have all of Prince's albums, and have seen him 5 times. Never in the 80's. I also have got loads of rare vinyl. I consider myslef a die hard fan, but I have to save up to buy what I buy and I really love it when I get something new by Prince. I think there is a lot of snobbery in the org and have seen new members ignored and ridiculed because they got something wrong or there opinion differed from the masses. If someone loves his music and is not scared to put there view forward when he releases a crap song, and can even be bothered to join a forum that is mainly filled with hearsay and jokes, then he is a hardcore fan, even if he has only liked Prince for a year.

as long as you feel the music, you can call yourself a fan

one of my best friends is a HUGE fan. He owns everything that's been released and has a decent bootleg collection. The catch is, he has lived in MPLS forever and has only seen Prince ONCE (the second Xcell show for the 2nd celebration) We've never been able to convince him to attend the Paisley Parties, celebrations, etc...

Do I think he's crazy? HELL YES

Do I consider him a big fan? ABSOLUTELY

I dont think you had to be there in any artists heyday to be a die hard fan of them. You can discover or rediscover something and become taken by it at whichever point in time of discovery etc. There are some people who were present at an artists prime of career concerts and music releases who are not die hard, and there are those who are new to something that become more passionate then those who were there for everything and/or at the beginning etc.

This is a bullshit statement...
"Mr. Loaded" didn't become "Mr. Loaded" by sitting around and eating out of his ass you know, he also had to work hard to do the things he wants to do... So the appreciation is exactly the same...

Even if his father left him all the money in a will? It's a pathetic attack on a hyperphetical scenario. The fact is that he decided to see Prince and got the ticket, Mr. Minimum Wage didn't think he would be able to go, he scrimped and saved and only just managed to get a ticket before they sold out. He found it far more satisfying than Mr. Loaded
