I fell in love with Solo this last weekend, it's a great song. Don't you think There Is Lonely fits with the sound of the album?

Really, why it was a number one?

Prince really was hot in Europe during the early 90s, so some of that may have carried over to Come.

To me Prince in the 90s was completely bizzare, though I do think Gold and Dolphin are two amazing songs. A big FU to anyone who calls them cheesy. Paisley Park is in your heart

The artwork is quite dark grey in colour, yes. But then the black album literally had a totally blacked out sleeve so it is darker.

P has no dark album, but his darkest ones must be 1999 and on top is that Symbol album to me. Batman in third place.

Ive always been surprised Prince never recieved any flack for that white ass makeup. Mans was looking almost MJ-level white a few times but it flew under the radar. It's weird how his skin tone would change so often, like the 1999 video compared with Lovesexy cover Maybe do, just not like did before

I remember when this album came in 1994, I tried my best to get into it.
The title track has great horns and that overused hip-hop beat of the day. But it just goes on too long and is a bit too overtly crude to be sexy.
"Space" in its album version might have been a better first single than "LetItGo." I likey!
"Loose!" just seemed like a lame attempt to get on the rave bandwagon. "Pheromone" just a notch higher.
I might *smack* "Papa" onto a B-side. But it's sort of half-baked.
"Race" is pretty funky and compellling. But when this middling effort is a standout track, things are not looking up.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE "Dark." Loved it then, loved it now. This helped me hold out hope that Prince could reignite my passion for this music (which had slipped with the previous album).
"Solo" is interesting to me.
"LetItGo" is okay. It's sort of fits into the R&B sound of the day without being particularly compelling. An okay groove for the era of "complaint rock."
Not sure I made it through "Orgasm" more than once.
I actually like the poetic bits that begin some songs. Keeps a thread running the album.
Given that "Dark" is my favorite song (and the only one besides "Space" (which is also dark) I regularly return to), I guess this is a pretty dark affair.
If you love the whole thing, that's great.
"Chaos and Disorder" would be the next Prince album (possilbly last) I would grow to love pretty much start to finish. And that was another contractual "throwaway." Also dig "The Vault." Much more than this comeback efforts of the '90s.

With There Is Lonely there and Endorphine Machine it could have been better.

I really dig Come - great album. I totally skipped it when it came out. Didn't even hear it until a few years ago. There is some great stuff. Race - come on. Probably the one time where Prince really nailed rap, and both the song and lyrics are killer. I could do without the spoken seashore bits. I've thought about making an edit of the album pulling those little interludes out. Neither here nore there though.
I think the one thing that grates on me is the gratuitous lip smacking that goes on during the over-long title track. Take out the sea side quasi-proselytizing, Prince sloppily going to town on his arm at the control desk or whatever he was doing to track the cunnilingus parts, and probably shorten the song Come down to about 6 minutes and it would be a nice improvement on an already solid album. IMO.
As for it being a masterpiece though... throttle back, Turbo

. Why not question it? That's what discussion is all about. Interesting discussion, that is. I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

. RE: TGE as 'Purple Rain' of the '90s -- P certainly seemed to intend it to be, which is part of the album's weakness. . RE: the "message" of 'Come' - what would you say the message is? . If anything, I'd sum up the "message" sent by 'Come' as 'I don't want to be associated with Warner anymore' -- which had little to do with the record's actual content, except that he knowingly delivered subpar material. The fans paid the price. I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.
