Because?

.

Because I don't think unfinished work and/or work not specifically earmarked for release should be released.

.

When is a work finished?

Can't we enjoy the raw beauty of a demo?

What is the background of 'should not' here?

Where is the line of what should? And who decides on that?

After investing quite a bit of resources in this person I'd like to see some stuff...

I think one of the Piano & Microphone tour shows should be released as a DVD/CD set

and the 1983 Dance Benefit show should be released as a DVD/CD set

When is a work finished?

.

When the creator of the work decides to release it to the public.

.

Stuff will come out, hardcore fans will get it - many will overpraise it. Most non-core fans won't bother. That's fine.

.

Not sure what you mean by the question "What is the background of 'should not' here?"

.

You mean who decides on what should be released? In my own opinion, no one. Just don't release it. It's over. Live with what we have. I'm idealizing, I realize, not putting forth an especially realistic proposition. Vultures pick a corpse clean. There's money to be made. Respect for an artist's legacy be damned.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Release or not is no benchmark.

Even after release one tinkered with a song or complete albums.

Rave in2?

Songs get updates or reinterpretations as well.

So what does a release say?

.

The line that one draws to decide on 'should' versus 'shouldn not' needs definition.

Exactly because there is a vault it needs releasing.

Yes, the artist tinkered with it and released an altered version. Both are released. Both represent the vision of the artist at two different times.

.

That's what a release says. It's the artist's vision. At that time. When the artist is gone, it's over.

.

Every artist leaves behind unfinished work. Not every artist has a tomb-raiding pack of vultures as fans who begin wringing their hands within months (or weeks... or days...) of their passing, licking their chops at what they seem to consider their birthright.

.

It does not "need" releasing. There is money to be made, so obviously there will be releases (and of course already have been). But "need" does not factor into it.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

When is the last time you purchased (or listened to) a record by Nat King Cole? Or Frank Sinatra? Or Judy Garland? Or Ella Fitzgerald? Or anyone who was considered to be an 'artist' of their time? My point is that these other artists for sure didn't leave behind a vault full of songs for their fans to enjoy and their musical legacy is pretty much dead. Sure, you've got your Elvis and Jimmy Hendrix that continue to sell, but what about all those other 'artists' that don't? Do you not think that the average music fan gets tired of hearing the same songs by singers and wants to move on to others? This is what happens when there's nothing new coming out. Do you really want Prince's musical legacy to die off in ten to twenty years time when there's probably years worth of music hidden away that us 'tomb-raiding pack of vultures' would like to hear and appreciate because we love Prince and the music that he created for us to enjoy? I'm not foaming at the mouth to get my grreedy hands on those songs, but sweet Jesus he left them behind and knew that they would get released and that his 'fam' would enjoy them. He never once said that he didn't want them to come out. Never. If he didn't want those songs to be heard he would have had a huge fire and burned them all like he did when he wanted to rid himself of the reminders of his marriage to Mayte.

Parade Deluxe Edition: Remastered album, b-sides and extended versions disk, outtakes disk, and 1986 Birthday concert on DVD

Piano & Microphone Final Show or Gala: DVD and Blu-ray (I assume it was shot in HD) and CD versions.

If you allow them record company people to get away with these simple releases it will take decades to even release a simple tour.

If they do not release full tours, full projects, (I expect them to not do this) then they fail at sharing the true genius of Prince.

It is not his albums which we all can know.

It is all the extra stuff that he did (i.e.: vaulted materials) that we know or perhaps do not yet know.

That is what makes him more special.

.

Now think of your age.

Then think of your life expectancy.

Then think of the amount of songs, shows, etc in the Vault.

Divide this amount by the remaing years of your life.

This resulting amount probably will be a number higher than one.

Now think of a conservative 10% of this flood of music.

Still the resulting amount will be a number higher than one.

.

This means that record companies thinking they can get away with one release (even a small multi disc set like the PR remaster debacle) are utterly insane.

.

What will the monetization potential of P's art be in 25 years? 50 years? Beyond that?

.

So where is the activity catalogueing, preserving, mastering etc all them things in the vault?

We read nothing about that.

[I have submitted the results of the survey conducted by Org member, tbokris, the suggestion by Org member Moonbeam and the front page poll created by me. I'll let them figure out the importance of the data submitted, but I must say - what we've done here should be considered very valuable to both The Estate and Warner Bros.! Usually they have to pay for such detailed marketing research from fans like Prince's. Since this portion of her request has been fulfilled, I'm locking this thread. Thanks for your participation! - lock - June7]
