Sorry to enter into the discussion so late, but I am really disappointed by the suggestions made in this thread. We are asked what we want to see released from the mythological vault - and all you can think of is a cd/dvd-set of the 1st Ave gig from 1983, or the Piano & A Microphone Shows from Paisley Park?

Who if not Prince should at least match if not top the latest archive releases from fellow legendary artists like Bob Dylan or The Greatful Dead. I said this before, but Dylan's latest release was a 36 CD set of all his recorded live shows from 1966 (very affordably priced, btw), and before that came a 6 CD set of all his home recordings from 1967. That's what we need from Prince!

And Grateful Dead fans were treated to a 80 CD set containing 30 previously unreleased live concerts last year. Not for streaming, not from some small record company, but from Rhino. Wonderful to look at, including a 288 page book, and for those who want their music as files only (I surely don't!!!) also including a USB stick with all files in flac format.

As far as I'm concerned that's what we should talk about here! Let's make it big and comprehensive. Let's talk about sets containing 40 or 80 CDs, covering whole eras in a comprehensive way. The 1986 Box Set that was discussed here two years ago would be a nice way to start. 20+ CDs with all the Studio Sessions and canceled releases from that year (incl. The Flesh, Dream Factory, Camille) plus key concerts and rehearsals.

Less then that just won't do. Thanks for listening!

[This is a brilliant, well thought-out post. Regardless of the poll results, in which I will submit the two highest voted selections, I will attach this note as well. Thanks for the input! - June7]

This is a great post but are you really going to submit the results of one badly thought out poll to the estate as being representative of what the fans want? I hope not.

Sorry I'm late. It's been a busy week.

Have we reached a consensus yet? No? Cool! wink

Since it is a very well established fact that there was nothing and I do mean NOTHING like being at a Prince concert and watching Prince perform LIVE. I have personally had that pleasure multiple times, in the '80s, 90's and 2000s and I'm grateful for every single one of them. But there are so many fans that never got to see Prince in concert, through the different phases of his illustrious career.

So my suggestion is for a Deluxe DVD box set of LIVE concert performances through the years from around the world.

Yes, I know I've been begging for this for years but this time I'm not just asking for myself, dang! lol

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I also have thought about how the poll could be possibly more informative. Some of the poll choices are fairly vague: what exactly is someone voting for if they select a SOTT deluxe + DVD or Paisley Park performance collection CD and DVD?

Also, it might be worth having a poll run where users can vote on all of the nominated choices, by selecting how they feel about the release. It could be set up like this:

Release 1 (see full details on ThreadXXXX): How likely would you be to buy this?

-Very Likely
-Somewhat Likely
-Unsure

-Somewhat Unlikely
-Very Unlikely

How much priority do you feel this release should be given over other candidate releases?

-High Priority

-Medium Priority

-Low Priority

-No Priority

Release 2 (see full details on ThreadXXXX): How likely would you be to buy this?

-Very Likely
-Somewhat Likely
-Unsure

-Somewhat Unlikely
-Very Unlikely

How much priority do you feel this release should be given over other candidate releases?

-High Priority

-Medium Priority

-Low Priority

-No Priority

Such a poll could be set up as a Google Doc and be linked from the front page.

yeahthat

I agree with Moonbeam...

I wonder if meaningful poll results could be be gleaned if we the questions were posed as follows...

1. Rank, in priority order, the era of material you are most interested in (list all eras that people can rank according to their preference):

  • Pre For You (e.g. 94 East)
  • For You
  • Prince
  • Dirty Mind
  • etc

2. Independant of the era, rank the kind of content type that you are most interested in (list of the types of content that people can rank according to their preference), e.g.:

  • Resmasters of content already officially released
  • Studio outtakes
  • Live recordings
  • Live performance video
  • Music video
  • TV Appearances
  • etc

3. Independant of the era and content type, how would you most like to consume this content, e.g. (list the available content formats):

  • Physical release
  • Streaming
  • Download
  • etc

4. What do you think is the most approprirate compensation model, e.g.:

  • Physically released audio, per song = $ ____, per album = $____
  • Physically released video, per song = $ ____, per album = $____
  • Streaming of

Should we provide the esate with this kind of meaningful AND ACTIONABLE data? Isn't this the kind of market demand information that any business needs in order to determine where they invest time and resources to serve the market???

Prince.org moderators: PLEASE provide some leadership here! Right now, the community seems to be just shouting and I think that you play a critically important role in aggregating this market demand on behalf of the community and presenting something ACTIONABLE to the estate. We can do better than this.

My $.02

I 2nd this. It is the only way to guage the demand for the music and then put in place a business plan that will satisfy the demand.

If the estate are wanting to rush a release imminently then the poll on the first page may suffice in the short term. But going forward they need to create a strategy that not only pleases their bank managers, but also pleases the fans. Throwing out suggestions like this thread is really not what you would call market research.

It seems the org is not setup properly to conduct a proper poll with multiple options that can be selected. And the fact that it is on the home page where few of us actually visit also renders it kind of irrelevant. The poll suggested by CDinwiddie needs to be conducted properly on a platform designed for such polls and then the word needs to be spread in every forum on the org about it as well as all the various facebook pages. It will only work as a reliable poll if thousands of people take part.

I echo CDwiddie

Its a good survey, but I would avoid asking for specific things like 21 nights, CB II & III etc. There is too much to categorise that way. Rather stick to questions about eras, studio vs live, what chronological order etc.

The problem I have with the poll on the front page of the org is it someone elses ideas of compilations that I have to choose from and that poll doesn't actually contain what I really want such as chronological releases of outtakes compiled by year. CB releases dont cover that and imply a mix-match of eras which then poses the problem of what songs to include on each release, watering down the poll even further.

I would start the poll by asking for the fans' favourite era. That way we can lock down the majority era most people want to hear.

I would then ask what fans want to hear from that era the most - studio outtakes, concerts, aftershows and visuals such as concert footage, music vids etc. Allow these choices to be graded from most wanted to least wanted. We then have a lock down on era and most sought after product from that era.

then I would ask in what format the fans prefer to receive the releases - CD, vinyl, download, streaming etc.

Next question would be the type of outlet they would prefer - brick and mortar store, iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Tidal, dedicated subscription website etc.

Finally i would ask what a fair price would be to pay for: Single CD, double CD, Triple CD, same for vinyl, song download, single album download, double album download, website anual subscription etc.

With that data the estate can then guage where the fan base is and it will give them a base from where to start working and compiling from. No need to ask about specific albums or made up compilations. those things will naturally surface based on the above poll.

If I were the estate I would have this poll on their own dedicated website. Hopefully, that website would then evolve into the subscription model that I personally would prefer where my membership gets me X amount of downloads per year (or discounts on releases), but non subscribers can still purchase downloads and physical copies of whatever gets posted on the site.

I love the diversity of the answers. I am surprised at how many people want DVD's when I would rather have CD's. DVD's never crossed my mind (I haven't even watched the one I got with the Purple Rain deluxe CD). I guess I wouldn't be against that. As great as an 80 CD set sounds I'm not sure the average fan would be able to afford something like that. I'd rather have a little at a time that wouldn't break the bank. I am realizing that I am in the minority on both accounts lol

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

My holy grail is the unreleased Madrid 2 Chicago album, teased on NPGMC in 2002 and theorically recorded circa 1998.

Generally speaking I'd favor any unreleased album that may have been compiled/completed by Prince (for himself or protégés): it seems Prince was fond of the album format, and so am I.

I keep coming back here and its getting more and more complicated.

Lets face it...Everything needs to be out there...

NOW

Things are too slow....and I understand why, there are of structures that need to be created to act

as Vehicles for delivery...

THere are simple ways to do things, that

people who are habituated to complicated corporate enviroments cant bend their heads around.

He worked his whole life to get his music TO US in creative ways and at the same

time largely saved himself from being expolited...After he felt he had been

Ive said it before he was a Social Entrpreneur who used a product which was ~himself~

to generate income streams with a triple bottom line

using the basic principles of Innovate Sell Serve, Princes business ethic was very much

that of a social entrpreneur..

he wasnt in it to get rich, though he didnt do without..

he was in it to share and care..for real !!!

a) Sell niche product ~ eliminating the middle man~ Make most of the Profit!

b) Invest profit back into product development to increase the stock to increase sales and further profits

c) Skim Excess profit and direct towards Socio economies and Social causes

Getting everything out in the following way would be relatively simple to set up....

The frame work would take 25 or 30 People working in harmony

From 2006 When NPGMC announced its hiatus

"In its current form, there is a feeling that the NPGMC has gone as far as it can go," reads the statement. "Has the time come to once again make a leap of faith and begin anew? These are questions we in the NPG need to answer. In doing so, we have decided to put the club on hiatus until further notice."

2017

www.NPGMC<+/0.com

1) A Dedicated Prince streaming Platform that holds all Concert Footage, Video Clips, Movies, Any Aftershow thats been properly filmed and recorded that we may not have heard of

2) A crowdfunding initiative that calls for preorders on his entire Album Collection

Each one could be run seperately,

Limited edition Pressings for both Vinyls and CDS 1000 Pieces each

Rinse and repeat...If it turns out that 1000 are consumed quickly...just run another campaign

Leave youtube alone..stop the take downs for a year or two...

If the estate has been watching the comments they will see that there are many new and young fans who are absolutely ASTOUNDED at what they are finding...

and would buy...

especially if each CD comes with option to purchase the Merchadise from its time .

Take him straight to THE PEOPLE

The only FLAW I can identify in this approach is that it will shout out a giant FU to the WHole of the Music Industry...

This kind of direct marketing, if other artists were brave enough to adopt it, could collapse it...

at the very least cause a sizeable atrophy...

Ive been setting up socio economies in India since 1998...

Paramount in doing this work is finding NEW ways to do things

and constantly re adjusting your vision, Social Entrepreneurs are typically very fluid,

because soci economies change in structure due to being very responsive

to moves and shifts in the market.

this is the way of the future

this is a way current capitalistic explotative business structures can be rendered useless

I should have met Prince..He would have liked talking to ME on this subject...smile

edited for spelling...

PLEASE approach a release schedule with some degree of logic & chronology.

If we're being granted the opportunity to pick the next two releases, I would ask that now that Purple Rain has been re-issued, for the first, a pattern be established that goes back to the very beginning.

I want to hear the very earliest stuff. Packaged alongside For You. What tracks led to that album as he was finding his sound? What was recorded but didn't make it? And let this initial release serve as the pattern for the reissues that follow.

The second & subsequent releases following this pattern could be an expanded collection of non-album tracks from that era (we'd see more of this as he recorded more in the mid 1980s), his versions of songs written for side projects during each album period, & companion live albums with an accompanying aftershow.

Why be random? Why rush things? Curate the work responsibily & with good sense. This way, we as fans, can also better anticipate what's coming, if we have some idea of the order of release. Throw in some fun surprises for events like Record Store Day & you've got a (hopefully) satisfied market.
