Obviously everyone on this site would put Prince higher than 15. But I remember a time when these sorts of lists wouldn't include him at all, so let's be thankful for that.

Give it time - if the Estate do things right, you'll see P get progressively higher in these kinds of lists in years to come. The problem is that a lot of the really virtuoso guitar stuff is really only known to the fanbase. That's proven by the fact that non-fans get blown away by his "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" performance. We've all known he could do that for decades, but other people aren't as aware.

those are par for the course, generally they put black artists lower than white artists, just the way it is.

A couple questions:

Would Prince be at #15 (or even on the list) if he was still alive?
Is it just me or is Eric Clapton overrated?
How can someone like Randy Rhoads not be on this list? Edit: I see this is just about people in the RRHOF.

A couple thoughts:

I suppose Chuck Berry is at #10 because of people he influenced like Keith Richards but his guitar playing never did much for me. And while I’m fine with Hendrix at #1 I’d totally be fine with EVH there too. YouTube his ~9 live version of Eruption. It’s mind blowing. Though I’m sure someone will tell me about some guy I’ve never heard of who was doing that way before EVH was. lol

What is amazing about Prince is that maybe with the exception of Zappa - all of the others on that list you wouldn't see on stage without a guitar. They are GUITARISTS. Guitar was just a small, all-be-it mindblowing, part of Prince's creativity. He did whole tours without touching a guitar. He was so great he didn't even need it.

i was surprised they mentioned frank, he's even more neglected as a guitarists than prince or anyone else.

This list definitely needs some adjustments but the guitarist that are on the list are deserving.

Prince would have been much higher on my list but what do I know being a Prince fan. One guitarist I'm disappointed that didn't make the list was Steve Vai. Vai and Prince are two bad mamma jammas on the axe!

I don't think Vai is in the Hall of Fame - I'm sure he would've been on the list if he was

I read the comments section of the article and surprisingly no one mentioned Prince. I thought for sure there would be complaints like in the comments section of this article lol http://www.slate.com/blog...ndrix.html

RRHOF is a joke in so many ways. It’s basically who ever Jann Wenner and his Rolling Stone magazine cronies chose. And it ceased being a rock hall of fame with some of the recent additions. Maybe they need to change the name to the popular music hall of fame.

It's a great list. I don't feel any need to challenge it. Prince IS great, but so are the others.

Eddie Van Halen is so overrated in my opinion.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

JIMI is #1 on the list. I believe he was black. Am I mistaken?

Yes, but he is honest. When asked in an interview how it felt to be the greatest living guitarist, he said "I don't know, ask Prince".

Eric Clapton was definitely being honest. Aside from the fact if he was right or not: how many on this list are able to do all the genres/styles Prince mastered on his guitar: hardrock, funk, jazz, blues and so on?
What will it sound like when Eddy van Halen plays jazz or Angus Young doing guitar funk style?

I have my doubts.

I think that was debunked on Snopes, but it's fun to believe he actually said it biggrin Clapton is pretty overrated though. Same with Pete Townsend, I've never been able to get into The Who

As far as I'm concerned Frank Zappa should be number one followed by Prince and everyone else can have an honorable mention.

That’s interesting because to me someone like Jimmy Page is overrated even though I know Led Zeppelin (along with Black Sabbath) birthed heavy metal music. I’m sorry but this is awful:

I’m perfectly willing to admit Prince didn’t really pioneer anything with the guitar so if that’s people’s criteria fine don’t put him high on a list. But what exactly did Clapton pioneer? Is there something he did that no one did before him?
