Prince Singing Offstage for his Supporting Acts? Is there any Video Footage of Prince Singing Offstage for his Supporting Acts? Like here Purple Rain Tour Detroit November 4, 1984 Prince (off stage – vox) ) (30 minutes): Oliver's House / Erotic Cityfeat. Prince (singing off stage) / The Glamorous Life amongst others and in Miami April 7, 1985 Prince (off stage – vox)) (50 minutes): Shortberry Strawcake / The Belle Of St. Mark / Oliver's House / Next Time Wipe The Lipstick Off Your Collar / Erotic City feat. Prince (singing off stage) / The Glamorous Life Checking princevault looks like he did the whole Tour that way. And I think he did it during the 1999 Tour. All this before doing his Headliner Set. That would be so Cool to see!

He played the bass for Sheila E doing the whole PR tour.

What about the band backing Vanity 6 at Minneapolis Music Awards'82? Is that Prince on the guitar? With a fake beard? The wooh is on the one!

That's pretty cool , always figured he played guitar offstage. In a somewhat related note if you ever saw Liv Warfields performance on Fallon a few yrs back you'll notice someone with a hood recording the performance with a video camera , its definitely P. [Edited 8/2/17 18:07pm]

I forgot if it was 1981 or 1984
but he played bass, while Jerome held the bass on stage
It must have been 1984 when Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis were not there

where did you get that from? She had her bass player Benni and Sheila E and band were performing in other places in the states and Europe while Prince & the Revolution were in different places

This was discussed back in the day and I went to high school with a classmate that went to the PR tour had crappy seats almost behind the stage and they saw Prince sitting on a stool playing a bass.

1. My friend met/maybe dated Benny. . . 2. Why would Prince need to play bass? Benny and Levi could . . . 3. I lvoe seeing Sheila play guitar. What show is that from? I saw PR Tour twice and she didn't then

Right, Benni was the bass player for the GL period and Levi came in for Romance 1600
I believe this was from a show not attached to the Purple Rain tour opening
Possibly at First Avenue in October 1984

Maybe the show at the RItz in NYC before PR tour?
. . I dont believe the story of Prince palying bass behind the stage for Sheila. Maybe someoe is confusing it with the famous Time incident when Terry was snowed in, or maybe Benny was sick one day otherwise.

I am telling you something that was told to me by a school mate 30 years ago. They were looking right down on P's head doing the show. For all we know maybe he was not happy with the bassiest.
No reason for a high school kid to make this up.

He played the bass for Sheila E doing the whole PR tour. Bennie Rietveld was on bass for that tour in Sheila's band. He went on to play with Miles Davis and Santana, so I doubt he was anything but proficient. There's literally no logical OR practical reason why Prince at the height of his fame would play bass during his opener's set night after night, only to go on and do his own two hour solo set right after. I'm sorry but it's much more likely your school mate made this up... or, giving them the benefit of the doubt, has a shotty memory. I call BS. All P did during Sheila's set was an offstage feature during Erotic City. [Edited 8/8/17 6:07am] [Edited 8/8/17 6:09am]

There memory was short the next day after the concert? Think about that for a minute.

Yes, the memory of a minor 30 years ago would really hold up in a court of law. . . This reminds me of the time someone on the ORG violently SWORE up and down that their best friend's mother saw Sheila E in a supermarket iwth her husband and child. . . When questioned, the said poster was like "my friend's mother wouldn't lie!!" . . Girl, please.

We are not talkng about anyone in court. We are talking about a teen at the biggest concert in town looking down at Prince playing the bass doing the whole show. I remember this from back at that time and if someone were to ask that person I am sure they would remember and answer the question in court. It is not about what you believe it is about what you can prove and you can never prove someone is remember something wrong because it was 30 years ago.
The thrity year time difference means nothing and you are using a ridculous example but this is becoming the routine on this board.
Everybody thinks like they are 12.

This is wayyyyy too far fetched to be taken seriously, but I'll play.
1) what specific date/city/venue was this? 2) where was Bennie that particular night? we have established he was more than proficient, in fact Sheila's entire band was, especially after touring Europe right before the PR tour. Bennie would even take a bass solo during "Noon Rendezvous" on her solo tour; recordings exist. So Bennie somehow not being good enough or Prince not being happy with his performance specifically seems highly unlikely. If Bennie happened to be sick that night, for instance, or otherwise incapacitated, why not ask BrownMark to fill in? 3) if your school mate saw this, someone else surely saw this too? 4) with a relatively short change-over time between sets, he would have had to have been in full make up and costume at that moment. What did he look like according to your school mate? What was he wearing while he was sitting on said "stool"? 5) and finally, your first initial statement was "He played the bass for Sheila E doing the whole PR tour" and then after that was debunked quickly by way of various photographic evidence of Bennie you changed your statement to "I went to high school with a classmate that went to the PR tour had crappy seats almost behind the stage and they saw Prince sitting on a stool playing a bass." Can you see how that change of tune doesn't inspire much confidence in your claims? Oh well, you're probably just gonna stick with your "my school mate saw it so it MUST be true". Fake news. . Levi played guitar with Sheila. Switched to bass when he was recruited by Prince, IIRC. © Bart Van Hemelen
