What is a higher trading circle? And what makes them so special that they held onto this gem for 20+ years?

Oh lord all ya want, valid question. Is there an exam? Do you have to have traded a certain quantity to graduate from lower to higher? Do you have to have certain amount of money? Do you need to personally know Prince? Do you have to be a poser like Questlove? Do you need a certain number of Prince posters in your bedroom to be in the higher circle?

It's just some people that know others who know guys that have some rare stuff or better sounding or whatever (because someone might know someone who used to work at Paisley Park or Warner or used to be the hairdresser for one of Prince's girlfriends or...). And then they trade their stuff. Because things are more valuable when they're rare, they don't circulate widely. Or it's been a personal gift, so it'd be a breach of trust. Just like with anything that people might trade.

Hey loudmouth, shut the fuck up, right?

If you shared them, they could be special to the world.

If you shared them far and wide, less money could be made from them.

Did Prince personally give them to you?

You would get major props, worldwide, for sharing.

Just sayin'...

Who are these worldwide friends, and do they have access to your "stuff that makes othere fans faint"? -

You write : " i know for a fact that people would be making money off of my prized personal possessions"

Possibly.

But, if we 'share' it, the fewer people will pay to bootleggers for it.

(I stopped making bootleggers rich like 12 years ago.

Why ? those who are patient will sooner or later find it anyway on the net, for FREE.

Thats why I always pay rightfully for new official releases. I spend quite some money on music in general. Artists and the music industry are rightfully paid.)

No guilt for paying the bootleggers anymore.

-

Music. It's not yours. It never is and will be.

Prince made music for the world to hear.

You're just a tiny little part of that big wide world, who happens to be able to hear what Prince made for everyone.

-

If it would be a signature, a glove, some 'materialistic' personal Prince stuff you had, I would understand.

But music, is not something you can 'own' when you're not the creator. It just doesn't make sence.

Why are you here then ? If you don't share ? OK, you can be here to have opinions, or comments, that I understand.

-

Besides all this, peace and love. I don't have anything against you, since I don't know you at all.

But stating something like this, here, is asking for a reply.

Again, no war, no hate, no personal attacks. Just my personal humble opinion on what you write.

You do what you think you need to do. I just don't agree.

Funny thing is that if you own something nobody knows about = it does not make you any sense to feel value over otheres

So you need to share info within "tiny" circles - to have someone appreciate your uniquness.

As an example - I have a guitar which was customized to Ritchie Blackmroe specifications by his former guitar tech.
That guy died last year unfortunately sad(
That was the very last guitar done by that guy.

Does it make it special? - Yes
Is it possible to get the same guitar now? - Only of you get it from Ritchie Blackmore himself or one of the previous clients

Is it unique? - Yes, it has special personalized markings and upgraded tone adjustment solution.

Does it have personal appreal to me? - Yes. because I spent 3 years to persuade guy for doing it + 3 years to have it actually done.

Am I willing to sell it? - No.

Would I sell it to cool cat who would play it intensively - Yes, for reasonable money.

Does this all make ma any special or close to genius of Ritchie Blackmore - NO.

Have I bought the guitar to drive my self-esteem? - No. I just wanted guitar with such modifications (had scalloped large head strat before and fulfilled one of my dreams)

The other dream I have is to buy current reissue of Mad Cat - becasue I adore telecasters and Japanese craftmanship

As much as I hate it, I GET the cloak and dagger stuff. If I were in the circles where the exclusive stuff is shared, I'd wouldn't betray the trust of someone sharing with me. It's only because they're not that I bitch about it all the time. But I wouldn't come on the org and talk about the stuff I had that no one else does. All that does is stoke the fires of discontent.

Amongst members of the higher circles, the lustful have the nastiest jams, and the gluttonous often have vast hard drives of bootleg material. You do have to watch out for incontinence, though. confused

Man, a lot of who’s in what circle to get what is mostly place and circumstance. For instance, I've had the 1986 Boston Show since around 89/90 iirc. But, I only had it because I met someone through my subscription of Controversy Magazine who administered a Tape Lending Library where we could send her a blank cassette, and she would copy a show from her list. Once she decided to end the TLL, she gave away many of the master cassettes she had to those of us who had been getting things from her. That's how I got a good copy of the 86 Boston Show.

*

Then, my collection expanded again when I learned a trader from Europe needed something that wasn't that rare, per se, but he just couldn't find it because it was only shown on BET in America. (Again, this was pre-internet explosion when people actually sent mail via the postal service and made long-distance phone calls.) Since I was willing to share it for free, he was so grateful that he gave me a boatload of audio and video stuff. So, my collection, big though it is, did not expand because I learned a lot of secret passwords or looked to meet the right folks. Again, it was just place and circumstance as well as learning what my parents taught me. If you are nice to people, then people will usually be nice to you.

*

Additionally, while I agree that trading/sharing is best rather than making bootleggers rich, after a certain point in my life I just became lazy, especially when trading went heavy/mostly to the internet. I'm from a day when you could find a good trader and bootlegger in a certain magazine that was known for promoting high end bootleggers. So, using this magazine, I purchased some things from a guy who was honest and had a major collection himself. Over time, as he got new stuff, he'd let me know about it, and I'd purchase it. He would actually send me postcards—remember this is pre-internet explosion—informing me of his new arrivals. Once I became more internet savvy by the mid-90s, I was able to find things online for free. But, to be honest, being married with a full-time job, I don't mind paying a bootlegger for something rare that don't have.

*

On a final note, while I'm glad that folks have more access to unreleased work--audio and video, all the recent leaks have served only to remind me of just how much stuff I have as well as the quality of it. The vast majority of what's been leaked lately, I have and have in good quality. Yes, there are a few live things that I have that I want in better sound or video quality, but, for the most part, there hasn't been much that's been leaked that I didn't already have. And, I suspect that's the case for most of us who've been collecting boots since 88/89. To be honest, at first, when all the new leaks started happening, I was all high and mighty about folks getting so much stuff without having to work for it. But, in truth, as a broke college student in the late 80s, my Prince bootleg collection grew because of the kindness of others.

*

On a final, final note, please don’t DM me. With all that’s available online, I suggest that y’all get while the getting’s good and then share with local folks in your area who loves Prince as much as you do. (I hope this final statement doesn’t get me in trouble with a moderator.) One of the best feelings I’ve ever had was given some Prince boots to a local musician who loved Prince but was the epitome of the starving artist. This dude was dead broke but loved him some Prince. One day when he came to my house, his face illuminated like a Christmas tree. How could I say no to a broke-ass, starving face like that? But, that was in the mid-90s. Today, I say, go forth unto thou internet, making sure not to catch any viruses, and find the treasure that one desires.
