Cute question from a millennial From my daughter: "Where would i even find prince albums in a record store. What genre????"
I thought that was cute. Hopefully it wasn't a rhetorical question.

That is funny. I guess the most apt would be the GOAT section. "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all"

I've seen Prince filed under Pop/Rock but also filed under Soul.

There was a book about "Alternative Music" as a genre, I think it was the early 90s but maybe the late 80s, and this book made the case that Prince should be classified as Alternative and even included him in their Top 10 Alternative Artists list. My "alternative" friends at the time, who were into everything from Janes' Addiction to Dead Milkmen to Roky Erickson, etc... did NOT buy this thesis. I did. Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

Here in Mineapolis Ive seen him MOSTLY under R&B. However I have also seen him in Modern Rock and Local. Lawd just leave him in R&B lol. Good enough there even though he surpasses that by a mile. However, from a funk standpoint might as well. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Always in Pop/Rock here in New Zealand but what's the point. They only ever half a dozen albums. Same for MJ but that's his entire output. If the milk turns out to be sour, I aint the kinda pussy to drink it!

I think this is a very real question that has never really drawn any consensus across any record store / itunes / digital format/ radio station or home filing system. He's filed everywhere depending on what record store you go in... rock/pop, soul, r&b.... madhouse is found in jazz, etc... you literally have to check multiple sections of a record store when you go in because it could be anywhere...
