*PURPLE RAIN DELUXE* - DISC 3 (EDITS/EXTENDED) - Discuss

C-hEiCRXUAE4tN6.jpg

The long-awaited Purple Rain Deluxe is out now.

You can listen on Spotify here. You can purchase it on Amazon, in your local record store, or via the official website at www.officialprincemusic.com

This thread is for discussing the third disc of extended mixes and edits.

Obviously, this collection is sadly incomplete: it lacks 3 additional Purple Rain edits and this is plain wrong.

It could also have included 4 The Tears In Your Eyes (USA For Africa version), since it was released a short while before ATWIAD, i.e. still in the proper "Purple Rain" era, but I assume it was considered more appropriate to include both versions on a future ATWIAD release, so I can live with that, but omitting the 3 PR edits is really bad. Least they could do is to release them as remastered single digital downloads!

The sound glitch at the beginning of Erotic City is simply unacceptable mad duh

I would discourage anyone to spend a dollar on this product unless at least this has been corrected.

Strictly to my interest, I would be happy the same if the 3rd CD was a 2-track including only "God (Love Theme From Purple Rain)" and "Another Lonely Christmas (Long Version)".

So, being these two with no audio defect and in official quality, I live well with it.

That said, the distortion on EC is an absolute major letdown, only partially alleviated for who (like me) have the 1989 "Erotic City) German CD on his collection.

I really like the God extended instrumental. All the single edits seem majorly unecessary and clearly a way to fill up a third disc. But, hey, PR deluxe reissue - I'll take it. The Erotic City sound quality isn't fantastic, but doesn't bother me THAT much. The mix is a little too "bright," IMO.

Fully agree, I have also the German CD...so lucky we are. Has the digital version also the distortion?

Yep, I have the German version too. Wasn't even something I thought I MUST have back then. I was simply a Prince fan and saw it and bought it, thinking it might be interesting. Glad I did.

No way would I put 4 The tears In Your Eyes on here. It sits in the AWIAD period or even the Parade recordings more than Purple Rain.

Yes, it was recorded at the end of the Purple Rain Tour, but a whole year after the likes of the PR last PR recording sessions (the B-sides) and even after the majority of the ATWIAD tracks.

It firmly sounds like a transition track between ATWIAD and Parade, and was recorded along side the Romance 1600 tracks, which again, firmly lean towards the Parade recordings.

Well, as I've said in another thread, anyone who feels the same should email the CEO of Warner Music Group at steve.cooper@wmg.com

"4 the tears in your eyes" was on the We are the World album which was on Columbia records. WB woud have to get permission to use it and pay big bucks for it. Which is why they used a different version on the Hits/the B-sides collection. Seeing as it has nothing to do with "Purple rain" it wouldn't make sense for them to put it on the disc and go through all the hassle.

Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.

It's weird that nobody mentions I would Die 4 U (extended). It is pure magic. Has this been available in the bootleg scene for a bit?

It was included in the same "Erotic City" German CDS we are blessing.

Ever since it was officially released in 1984.

Which means it's never been on the bootleg scene unlike the 30 minute version it was edited down from.

Like I said this is subject to debate. Based on recording session dates and/or prior releases, one could argue that remasters of Irresistible Bitch and She's Always In My Hair belong on a PR Deluxe because they're PR sessions era recordings, while I Would Die 4 U extended and Another Lonely Xmas for example belong on an ATWIAD rerelease for same reason. And then again it could be argued that We Can Fuck belongs to a GB Deluxe because it's an early cut of a GB song... With Prince being in an ongoing recording session his whole life, and constantly revisiting older recordings, it's impossible to objectively make those kind of decisions (unlike an artist like, say, Bowie, who would often work on a specific project for a specific amount of time, and not record all the time, so there it's easier to say what belongs where). Editorial decisions have to be made and I agree thatTTIYE can be associated with either ATWIAD or PR, or even early Parade sessions (though I don't believe anything for Parade was recorded prior to the end of the PR tour).

lol lol lol IDK how you got his mail but addressing customer complaint to the CEO instead of the customer complaints ervice is brilliant: if he gets flooded by emails some heads are gonna roll lol lol

I will mail Mr. Cooper next week, and I think I may as well send him my resume and an application letter, too, because I'd have done better as a consultant on this project than WB staffers have lol

I've also just read that there's a synch problem on the DVD. The lack of quality control on this project is, wow, something.

Although, if it helps, there are many ways to get Erotic city extended, on the original singles and some very good quality boots. My favourite mix is on the one used here without the dropout on Lets Go Crazy 12 and for some reason repeated on the British 12 inch of Girls and Boys issued in August 1986 for a Parade tour collectable.

.

The disc could have been done better, as most of the 7 inch mixes came out on 4ever and the 12 inches on Prince Ultimate. Also I agree, where is 17 Days extended, that song must exist extended beyond 4 minutes. God (Love theme from Purple Rain) is a treat though and sounds better than my muddy bootleg mix on Testament 1983 and Purple Rush Volume5 with the 45 minutes of Purple Rain music score.

.

I mean would it kill them to put The Bird, Jungle Love, Modernaire and Sex Shooter on that album too.

.

I mean the videos for all those songs sans Modernaire, appeared on the 20th anniversary DVD set of Purple Rain, along with MTV party and even original movie ads.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Agree. I've put these two favorites with the entire disc 2 on a digital playlist. I would add that I enjoy the extended I Would Die For U. It is new to me though I suspect must orgers already have it.
