Your suspicions about it being a marketing department creation is a bit cynical and from a modern eye. Purple Rain is right at the start of movie soundtracks and tie-ins and music videos being a thing. It's a very influential film from thet POV. Now every friggin' movie has a pop music soundtrack and cross-media promotion, but back then it wasn't quite as saturated as it is now.

One thing I never picked up in the movie, was that Jill Jones had an unrequited love for Prince. I never got that until she mentioned it after his passing. I have not read through this entire thread so forgive me if it's been mentioned already-- but, did anyone else pick up on this when they first watched Purple Rain? I thought she was a friend and nothing more, I never caught that they were a missed romance. Did you guys see this?

I totally knew she was in love with him from the first time I saw the movie way back when. It made me like her character more as at first I thought she was just a snotty b*tch. I think her unrequited love for The Kid rather mirrored her real life......

There are quite a few references to that in the movie.

1 - When The Kid and Apollonia first see each other eye to eye . . . Jill is there in the middle of them, and recognizes the spark immediately. She's not happy about it. Awkward.

2 - Jill gives Apollonia's contact information to Morris -- probably as a passive-aggressive form of sabotage or just to stir up some shit.

3 - Jill flirts with The Kid as she's handing him a cassette of "Purple Rain" to listen to. He appreciates the flirting, but doesn't really flirt back.

4 - Jill is waiting by the back door (crying) as The Kid re-enters First Avenue to thunderous applause. Why? I don't know. Maybe she thought she'd successfully sabotaged Apollonia and now was her last chance.


Fast forward 6 years . . . if Graffiti Bridge follows the same timeline . . . The Kid eventually does end up with Jill, but she gets fed up with his shit and leaves him.

You're right--- I've seen the movie a million times and missed this... but it makes sense.
