I've never understood why The Modernaires had a "secure" spot in Billy's 3-act lineup. If it were real life, why weren't they on the chopping block?
I get that it sets up the rivalry between The Revolution and The Time, but they don't even make mention of The Modernaires other than that one performance and Billy saying he had 3 acts already.

2) Morris and Prince are rival band leaders, fighting over the same spots on the local scene "I've got 3 bands, I don't need 4" like Billy says.
.
3) She had nice knockers? I don't know, she's a sexy girl, she has that thing, he's a star maker as well as a star. What more do you need?

Your suspicions about it being a marketing department creation is a bit cynical and from a modern eye. Purple Rain is right at the start of movie soundtracks and tie-ins and music videos being a thing. It's a very influential film from thet POV. Now every friggin' movie has a pop music soundtrack and cross-media promotion, but back then it wasn't quite as saturated as it is now.
I agree w your first point completely, we don't need to understand why for the story to work, just that there is conflict.
You're second point is also spot on, two groups competing for the same space and a greater audience will mean this sorta conflict.
I agree w your third point two I just want to add to it. Prince and Apollonia's relationship may have just started out as a "you're cute, I like you" thing for both of them; not too serious. But when Apollonia wanted to work w Morris it hit a soft spot w The Kid. He felt threatened and wanted her more. Him pushing her to not work w Morris pushed her away, then it became "you want what you cant have."
The Kid fell for Apollonia because he couldn't have her and that made her important. In the end they were both important to each other and both saw it. |

I need to find the interview, but he was saying that there was no real life inspiration for that song. Of course, Prince could lie.
Another thread, () but... Yes, he said that it wasn't anything carnal, but a few paragraphs before that, he explained who and what inspired it in detail. He said “Do you want him or do you want me,” that was written for that scene in Purple Rain specifically. Where Morris Day would be sitting with Apollonia, and there’d be this back and forth." Then he went on to highlight the lyrics that Vanity's departure inspired. He said, " And also, the beautiful ones, you always seem to lose. Vanity had just quit the movie" He mentioned her name in connection to those lyrics because her departure was the inspiration. Here is the article. https://www.facebook.com/...788385046/
Months later after that article was taken down - at vanity's tribute, Prince would even initiate that she inspired the song again when he stated: "She knows about this song" before singing it as a dedication to her. The 365 prince song article explains it. http://diffuser.fm/prince...ck=tsmclip

One thing I never picked up in the movie, was that Jill Jones had an unrequited love for Prince. I never got that until she mentioned it after his passing. I have not read through this entire thread so forgive me if it's been mentioned already-- but, did anyone else pick up on this when they first watched Purple Rain? I thought she was a friend and nothing more, I never caught that they were a missed romance. Did you guys see this? |

I totally knew she was in love with him from the first time I saw the movie way back when. It made me like her character more as at first I thought she was just a snotty b*tch. I think her unrequited love for The Kid rather mirrored her real life......

What movie were you watching? Of course, she was dying with love for him.
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves. |

I even asked my sister, "did you pick up on the unrequited love between JJ and P when you first watched it?" and she said no as well. |

There are quite a few references to that in the movie.
1 - When The Kid and Apollonia first see each other eye to eye . . . Jill is there in the middle of them, and recognizes the spark immediately. She's not happy about it. Awkward.
2 - Jill gives Apollonia's contact information to Morris -- probably as a passive-aggressive form of sabotage or just to stir up some shit.
3 - Jill flirts with The Kid as she's handing him a cassette of "Purple Rain" to listen to. He appreciates the flirting, but doesn't really flirt back.
4 - Jill is waiting by the back door (crying) as The Kid re-enters First Avenue to thunderous applause. Why? I don't know. Maybe she thought she'd successfully sabotaged Apollonia and now was her last chance.
Fast forward 6 years . . . if Graffiti Bridge follows the same timeline . . . The Kid eventually does end up with Jill, but she gets fed up with his shit and leaves him.

Thank you for breaking this down! I got 1. and 3. but totally missed 2. altogether (maybe if I'd caught that I would have realized) as for 4, I saw that but thought the crying was because of how touching the performance. Anyway, thank you breaking it down- now I see... |

#4 - she might be crying because at that moment, she realizes that her hopes for getting him to love her are over . . . like he'd never feel for her what he just displayed onstage for Appolonia.
