This kind of thing actually happens today, the private funding of artists through donations, so, yes, this is a serious proposition. Millions to fix recorded tapes? OK. It might take a while if the estate doesn't establish another relationship with a Universal or some such big company. I think the estate could do it though, with the help of fans, who appear to feel particularly entitled--at least around this place! Or with the aid of a small ambitious label. This can work--it does work. Project by project--big copillations don't have to appear all at once. > Maybe all of the people who holler about what they want, now that Prince is gone and no longer able to do the work to make these things happen, can open up their purses and wallets, to help get it done! Of course, you wouldn't need to do a thing, Bart! You know what you do best! > Welcome to the New Dawn and play in the sunshine, peeps!

People discuss boots and the people looking for them use that information to find who the bootleggers are. Why does this have to be explained to you? See the link to an article about this exact stituation I have also looked at copies of some C&D that went out from Rhonda Trotter. Do you think that they found out about these people and sitesby rubbing on a magic genie lamp. If people stop telling everything about the leaks no one would have to worry about anyone coming after anyone.

If the org banned discussions it might take a longer and be a lot harder to find them. I think since the Org can ban other discussions that certainly involve nothing illegal ( somepeople are over sensitive ) at all they could ban discussions of boots. That is what org notes are for.

. Like who? Please supply us with a list of rich artists who beg for money this way. Zach Braff did it once and was widely criticized. .
. Nonsense. The costs involved would be far too great to get this fan-funded. Moreover, there is already a system in place: record companies. Expecting fans to pay for this in advance is lunacy. .
. Small labels do not have the finances to handle this. © Bart Van Hemelen

Why was a cease and desist letter sent? How about the copies of the others that were sent out and Mrs.Trotter comments about them? Do you think an attorney that charges 800.00 hours has time to draft C&Ds for grins and giggles.

Thank goodness for the bootleggers. The family is just sitting by watching these guys eat their lunch:
1. Montreaux 3 DVD set - the BEST looking videos ever. Amazing camera angles, amazing shows etc.
2. All these amazing out takes...Emotional Pump???? Come Home???? Wally????? These guys are doing a lot for Prince's legacy...to think he could shelve songs of this calibre or give them away ...
Prince left everything all ready to release. The man was even working on his last show as a live release....yet, the family has failed to capitalize. It is a shame and I no longer feel badly if guys like Ian Boxhill release stuff. Prince greatness deserves the attention.

I suspect the trouble the estate are going to have is keeping tight enough control on new releases, and not letting tracks leak the second they're taken out of the vault. . The bootleggers clearly have some good sources, although I'm not sure if the new releases are just old copies finaly getting released, or new sources (since people have fresh access to Prince's Vault or WB's archive!?) . Maybe they just want to try to stem the flow before more new releases!? [Edited 7/24/17 9:29am]

Yes, to go after bootleggers. You want PR you hire a PR person for a hell of a lot less.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
What about the additional ones that filed later were they a PR stunt because you got people still bitching about that. The actual legal docs are on the net and they look real.

These C&D and lawsuits were not for PR purposes. It is just stupid to get discussing these boots on this site but go ahead and keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

The reason that I comment on this thread is that I feel the scramble for leaked bootlegs is a bit of an insane sideshow. People chase after second-source recordings that fare from crappy to okay while the possibility looms to have some excellent-quality, original stuff sourced straight from Prince's estate, were they to organize and launch their own projects. I mean, I understand chasing away the tedium of our days with some of this stuff, but I like to look to greater potentialities for the future. > Re. Bart's anti-supportive stance toward movements of independent archival recording productions:
This isn't about rich artists--Prince's estate is not a rich artist begging for money. Crowdfunding generates loads of cash for projects ranging from product development, filmmaking, musicians' recordings across the creative spectrum, video game production et al. I mean, the fund requestor's skills and abilities are the only limit to the range of projects that are requested for support; the campains offer passionate people who appreciate the kind of crafts and enterprises which they support an opportunity to make things materialize. Their contributions can supplement, and sometimes surpass the support that would (or not) be provided by a corporate entity. You can take a look around here (https://www.kickstarter.c...ost-funded) if you want to probe into the Kickstarter crowdfund that I mentioned. An example of one major film's funding project progress is detailed here: https://www.kickstarter.c...ost_funded, with feedback regarding the pursuit and effectiveness of crowdsourcing discussed by another filmmaker, here: https://www.buzzfeed.com/....knRazZAwD. > There was a modest campain done by an independent record label that I supported earlier this season, here: https://www.kickstarter.c...for-imprec. They have some pretty sweet offerings to entice people's donations, BTW. > An example of an archival recording restoration project for the Creative Music Studio archives, to preserve and digitize 400 recordings made by them between 1973 and 1984 is detailed here: https://www.kickstarter.c...-project-0. > There's an example of one completed fund campaign for a Frank Zappa documentary, plus a vault preservation initiative, here: https://www.kickstarter.c...ref=2cldm3. > If 1 million Prince fans were to donate one dollar to such a fund in a given month, for example that would give the estate 1 millon dollars to work with on tape preservation. > They could add indexing, depending on their fund access. On the other hand, they could grab one set of reels and perhaps work on producing one original album. > While it's true that hundreds of tape reels sit in the vault awaiting attention that altogether would be major-scale endeavor, it doesn't necessarily need to be handled in a big deal with a major player. Why not engage a series of smaller businesses and spread such industry throughout the broader, non-major-player community? > There is more than one pragmatic way to handle these materials. Fans can help in the effort if the estate will consolidate their focus and organize. In the meanwhile, the estate will continue to pursue the bootleggers to try and keep them in check. [Edited to add an example of a major audiotape restoration project that was crowdfunded + another recording project fund, for shits & giggles.] [Edited 7/24/17 14:11pm] [Edited 7/24/17 14:29pm]

They are all amazing. Im thinking this is already highly elite circulating stuff leaking. Obvs no one from the Estate would be doing this as of now. I'm sure in due time they will come up with some great reissues and repackaging, however all that is tied up in laws and contracts right now. No deal, no music. However, if they did they can take my money lol. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
