sounds like a live take. maybe in the warehouse... doesn't sound like a studio recording.

I think I can hear at least two multi-tracked vocal tracks during the chorus part. I can't discern any other voices than Prince's on it either, suggesting that it's done in a studio? The quality is pretty bad in any case.

Can anyone else hear, say, Wendy or Lisa there?

I suspect, he was fleshing the song out with the Revolution

Can't say that I hear them on this recording.

I think this is the best song Sheila ever did. Pretty crazy to hear him singing it. At first I thought rehearsal. But I think I can hear layered Prince vocals at certain points.

Yes, it sounds like 2-3 voices of him.

I suspected that as well.

For the record, it was initially tracked & recorded in January 1985, in Atlanta, while on the Purple Rain tour. Shiela & her band added their parts in Atlanta also. They seemed to stay busy in Atlanta for the eight days they were there. Princevault notes that "Bedtime Story", "Fish Fries", "Small Grey Monkey" and "Toy Box" were also recorded in Atlanta.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

But are we really hearing the band on this recording? Do we really know that the band had any input on this song?

Um yeah we are really hearing the band on this recording.
A lot of the Family & Romance 1600 songs were created while on the Purple Rain tour.

Screams of Passion, Desire, Feline, Mutiny etc

Noon Rendezvous etc A Love Bizarre Toy Box Bedtime Story were done during rehearsals on the PR tour

all performed/fleshed out with 'HIS' band before given over to the protege bands

We don't. It's why I listed all the other stuff. I would suspect that Prince was flying solo filling his need to always record a song. If it is Prince solo, I wonder how they would have sounded as a band record. Stuff like "All Day, All Night" and "The Ladder" were recorded during soundchecks, etc. That full reverby echoey sound is always so Prince.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Sounds like the guitar solo is one take, maybe his first.
Actually it must exist in pristine, this sounds produced à la "Purple Rain": overdubbing over one live take. Lots of pieces of the original here and there, just missing sheila's timbales and Crazy Eddie running upside down on the Sixtine Chapel ceiling.

I think the garagey sound comes from the reverb on the voice, because the guitar is so clean. Could also be a small recorder hidden in the Control Room. It would not be the first abuse of reverb on his lead vocal (SITW first version, God, ALC...)

I bet the multi-track of the final version has this leaked take underneath as a foundation. "Romance 1600" is still mixed extremely well, even if it takes a while to adapt the ear in 2017. Very dry, almost organic, caught between Around The World In A Day and Parade (is Michaelangelo the first blatant nod to the European culture in a Prince's song?). I love how Prince sounded so dry in the eighties, in a pop world drenched in two seconds reverb tails and gigantic snares. Very indie.

On good listening conditions, "Dear Michaelangelo" as the same cinematic effect on me as "Venus De Milo", and in a way, is the proto "Alexa De Paris", which was written in 1982-83, if I'm not mistaken.
I mean it's all atmosphere, imagery, drama, anguish, the chorus could as well be about Michelangelo's actual underwear, who cares.
"Dear Michealangelo" is the Gardens of Rome at dawn.

That fucking guitar solo, it's like condensed Rock'n'Roll, it just ejaculates to its own terms. It's kind of scary in moments. After all, Michealangelo was living a long ago, so he's a ghost by then. No Andre 3000 songs about love vampires without this one. "Dear Michealangelo" could be the single to Stoker's and Coppola's "Dracula".

I know why it evokes The Rapture.
The synth line towards the end sounds a bit like the orchestra line around "Genius is the only way to describe you", in "Scandalous".

But it's also the "Anna Stesia" and "Positivity",
and "The Rapture", and the "Just My Imagination" guitar sound.
Dear Michaelangelo stars the Blue Angel, not to be found on any record before 1988.
It's not just the distorsion and the octaver. It's also the scales he plays.

Hey, I feel like I just invented hot water or something.

Absolutely not! This is Prince by himself in the studio. The later overdubs are just Shelia and Prince.

When the sound is this bad, I can live without it. I'm not grateful for crap. Evil leakers can keep their samples and mono crap to themselves. It's "all or nothing" with me. mad

I know I may get a lot of shit for this, but I really love hearing Prince sing songs like this, that are so explicitly gendered as feminine. I know it wasn't his overt intent, but it really emphasizes just how radically queer he was at the time. And by queer I don't necessarily mean gay, before anyone's hackles get raised.
