It's a cover song. "You always get the dream that you deserve, from what you value the most" -Prince 2013

leadline said: It's a cover song. Yep. I thought the story was Prince heard it once listening to the local CCR station in the car and liked it enough to cover it. Paisley Park is in your heart

Originally done by Nichole Nordeman. KTIS (Minneapolis' Christian Contemporary station) interviewed her shortly after Prince's death. It was an interesting interview. Mainstream, iconic artist, Prince, just released a new single. Why are we telling you this? Because it’s actually an old song by Nichole Nordeman. Nichole wrote and sang the song, “What If” back in 2005. It was a big hit for her on Christian radio. Nichole says 5 years ago she got a call from Prince’s management asking for rights to cover the song. She gave them permission and never heard back. She figured it had faded over time.
Now, 5 years later, Prince released “What If” as his newest mainstream single. Turns out he heard it on the radio, then introduced it to his band. How cool is that?
Of course he put his own take on the song. It sounds pretty different musically, but the beautiful message remains the same.
Nichole was beside herself with excitement on her Facebook page saying:
“I don’t really have the appropriate words for what an honor this is… This man’s talent is otherworldly. What’s the non-musical equivalent? Tiger Woods asking to borrow your clubs? Neil Armstrong calling and asking if you’d like to take a walk?… Prince heard a song about the transforming love of Jesus on Christian radio and now has given it a much wider audience than I ever did or could.” Wonder what was running through Prince’s head when he heard it for the first time? ”

Love the song and Hannah is fine by me. She sounds good on this track and PE. (Insert something clever here)

It's super catchy song for better or worse. Her vocals are decent here.

The opening minute or so is great. Then Hannah starts with her Avril Lavigne impression.

Once of his last best tracks. Should have been on Plectrum. As good better than Another love. Telling his covers seem to like say more than his own songs at the end.

- He had me produce a full orchestration for this song (after it was released). I think he just wanted to hear what it would sound like. That song was already pretty thick as it was, so you can imagine what happened throwing strings, brass, and woodwinds on top of that. I think it was the 2nd to last song i worked on with him. -MBN

Sorry, wrong thread. [Edited 7/19/17 20:48pm]

Thanks for the information! Did he do that often, i.e. ask you to produce a full orchestration for a song to then discard it?

Probably my least favourite song by Prince, cover or not. Makes the lyrics of Jughead seem like a philosophical statement in comparison. 3RDEYEGIRL rocked live and Hannah is a competent drummer and likeable enough, but her vocals on those studio recordings were terrible and very distracting. This song perhaps typifies the worst of her influence.

I recall seeing a video of a recording session for that and hearing a lot of strings.

Doesn't help that the autotune/melodyne on her vocal has the vibrato turned up so it's warbly-er than normal - but that was the issue with most of her vocals on PE, anyway. Definitely sounds like a pastor's daughter CCM worship leader.

- I thought that it wasn't as likely to be for the next 3EG album since it had already been released, but it could certainly be possible he was thinking of using this alternate version on the album. Regarding the string session video, if it's the one with Donna showing up at the studio, that was for an instrumental called Rumeta, which I believe was planned for the 2nd 3EG album.

Thanks for sharing some new info (new to me anyway). . Going off the small clip on the video it would have been really interesting to hear how that 2nd album would have turned out.

It really is too bad a 2nd album wasn't completed. Despite some good songs, the first album was a letdown compared to the promise of the live shows and even some of the 3rd eye tv material.

Thanks, MrMoops. I only hope we get to hear some of this music eventually. It seems like Prince was going for more of a fusion sound than straight rock on the second 3EG album. Though I guess the strings could've been limited to just a few tracks. I know Ida mentioned on twitter recently that they'd recorded a full band version of 'That Girl Thang' that she remembers as being particularly beautiful, though there is of course no evidence that was being considered for inclusion.

A live album would be pretty essential for anyone unfamiliar to understand 3EG and the live environment and excitment Prince created with them. I really wanted a raw, back to basics album from them, something like how 'The Undertaker' was recorded. I love 'Indifference' and the stripped, acoustic sound. I hope it comes from a longer session we'll hear some day.

- I produced the string session for "That Girl Thang" as well. It was gorgeous. Adi Yeshaya and StringGenius did a beautiful job on it. [Edited 8/12/17 10:53am]
