New reviews of Prince albums: 80s and 90s

Hi all. I have just added some mini Prince reviews of his albums from the 80s through to the end of the 90s. It is not a Prince site but I couldn't help myself and thought that promoting a bit of Prince can't hurt (despite the seeming disconnection between the site and Prince). I have the 00s and 10s done, but do not want to flood the site with Prince at this early stage. i will upload more site relevant posts before I add more Prince.

Anyway, thought I would plug the pages here so that I can get some critisism of my factual gaps and spelling errors from Prince fans. The site is only a few weeks old and still very much under development so traffic is currently very low. Hopefully once Google has indexed it and I have aquired many more backlinks that will change.

In the meantime, rip me apart and tell me where I am wrong.

Cheers.

Prince 80s albums run through.

Prince 90s albums run through.

I always am pleased to see anyone discussing Prince (except for rumours)and spreading the news of his brilliance. I won't quibble with your opinions, as they say to each his/her own. I did find it odd that you gave such a positive review to the album Prince, even stating it would be the crowning achievement for many artists, and gave it a rating of 6. That would be a pitiful score for anyone's crowning achievement. Good luck with your site!

Cheers. I like the album and it would have been many an artist's crowning glory with a 8 or 9. But knowing what was to follow, it is hard to give it any more otherwise I would have to be giving SOTT a 15/10 to reflect the difference biggrin

I think you got your facts wrong regarding Kamasutra - it wasn't released as a single cd.

Thats what I thought but a quick look on Princevault and "Kamasutra is the first and only studio album by The NPG Orchestra, and was released in February 1997 on cassette through direct order from 1-800 New Funk (with the full album repeated on each side)".

I don't personally remember ever seeing it prior to CB however.

We share very similar views on Prince's 80's output.... less so on some of the 90's albums ( prince has always been one of those head scratching albums for me where I miss out completely on the vibe that leaves people such as yourself seeing it as a 10/10 album). Regardless, it matters not one jot if our thoughts are similar on certain albums, I like that you've taken such time and care to even do it.

I think your reviews are well written and in particular the above comment you made on why you rated Prince a 6 makes total sense to me. I go through this on IMDB constantly. I love Better Call Saul, but I loved Breaking Bad just that little bit more.... so how can I rate Better Call Saul a 10?

Liking your work. Good to see I'm not the only one who'd give Symbol album 10/10.

I enjoyed your reviews. I am wondering why there is no review of Newpower Soul.

Indeed I did. And Some people actually like Planet Earth!

IWD4U and Something in the Water unfortunately do not do anything for me whereas I cannot find a single fault on Parade... The day Prince fans agree on anything is the day world peace is achieved.

Strictly speaking it is not a Prince album. It is an NPG release.

You did good work here. I mostly agree with your assesments too. Did you skip over Exodus and GoldNigga on purpose? Because Exodus is probably my favorite 90's release and in my top 5 all time.

Nice! I like your writing style.

The only two things that stood out, were that you neglected to point out the songs that Prince did record by himself on 'Purple Rain', and also didn't mention that Prince was wanted for the Batman soundtrack. Jack Nicholson, Tim Burton, and the sudio (WB) wanted him.

"He's a musician's musician..."

Ah I see.. Well I guess the only person who can answer that question is you. What may be excellent to you may be dog poo to me. Personally, i dont think the excellence of the 80s was ever surpassed. He had moments but the run from Dirty Mind through to Lovesexy is mind bogglingly excellent and, in my opinion, of a standard that we may never see again in our lifetimes.

Yeah, I skipped those (and NPS) deliberately as they are NPG releases (although we know they are Prince in all but name). If I started down that rabbit hole I would then be getting into the Time albums and other such protege releases. Before I know it I would be creating another Prince site... And that is a daunting prospect I have flirted with for many years before realising it cannot be done by a fan alone. Not properly anyway.

It would be good to see a Prince site that covers literally everything from his life both musically and biographically, but what a daunting task that would be. Perhaps a collaboration would be better where the likes of the org, Princevault, Databank, official paisley Park, official Prince (WB) and other fan sites all joined forces and put their information under a single url with a unifying design throughout. That would be THE authority on everything Prince. Bring in a few of the good authors who have done biographies of Prince over the years and we would have the makings of a really great online ode to Prince. It would probably be a good revenue stream too with all the various affliate programs available around music, book, movie and merch sales. Everyone would be a winner from record companies, Paisley Park, fans and most importantly, new didn't-realise-how-good-he-was-fans.

But it isn't something I, or anyone, could do on their own. Not if we want to see something worthy of Prince's life and work. And I am not sure the Prince fan community is the most collaborative and easy going community to get such collaboration going. If we think the estate is in a mess, imagine the mess if the fan community tried to get together and all agree on an idea. We can't even agree the best songs on Emancipation. smile

Anyway, I digress....
