Apple Music tags most of Prince’s albums as R&B/Soul: do you agree?

I noticed most of Prince’s albums on Apple Music are tagged under the category of R&B/Soul (though oddly the new PR deluxe is tagged as pop where as the original is listed as soundtrack). Do you agree with the categorization? If you had to classify his music in a specific genre for a music service how would you classify it?

Dunno...I have all my P stuff in iTunes as simply "Prince", regardless of what it is...But I think a new fan is gonna be confused by labelling his stuff into any specific genre...

P is his own genre...

lol

They also used to (I don't know whether they still do) label all music in Spanish as 'Latin', regardless of whether it was pop, rock, jazz or salsa. It's at best lazy...

As I see it, Prince is his own genre. It should be placed into "PRINCE" lol

Exactly! And a lot of artists would fall under that genre too!

Well right now they have the original Purple Rain album tagged as a soundtrack but the remaster tagged as ‘pop’. Really sloppy.

That's how I tag everything--well, I did at one point have live boots as Purple Jams and unreleased studio stuff as Purple Underground, but so much got blurred as I got more and more releases that didn't really fit clearly or included pirated material, so I just gave up and went Purple Music with everything.

However, if I were a commercial entity labeling for marketing purposes, I'd go POP. Everything else is too reductive, and lies about Prince's eclectic nature. Pop, as an omnivorous beast, will take a little bit from everywhere, and doesn't care at all where its getting it from, at its best surpassing it's sources. That's Prince.

Just to keep things simple, and because of some smart playlist I created, I labeled all Pop.

I just don't want to label every track with the correct genre (if it exsists) because most albums contain pop, rock, r&b, dance, jazz etc..

Just like I labeled everything house/trance/electro etc as Dance.

Laydown

If take cds and rip them to a pc you will find most Prince albums have rnb/soul as their genre, its pigeon holing, and Prince music is anything but.

no. the correct and obvious answer is no because he was more than just that. he's rock, pop, soul, r&b, jazz, etc. but whatever. i have my stuff categorized by Prince, prince, Prince and the...etc. i think i'm just gonna put it all under "Prince" one day when i get a chance.

I use Google Play (paid + my own uploads) and have all Prince and associates tagged as Prince so when I shuffle the Prince genre -- the mix is awesome

obviously, its because he's black... black artist have always been classified as r&B/soul...even if their music sometimes strayed from that... that said, Prince is rhythm & blues & soul....he just had the innate ability to compose and play other stuff too
