My very short Prince journey This post is going to be a bunch of rambling thoughts..... I'm 34 years old and was born in Minnesota and lived here my entire life. Born in 1983, I missed Prince's most epic period. So, I never got into P's music before his death. When he died, I think I only knew a few of his songs: Kiss, P Control, 1999. I didn't know any of the Purple Rain album songs......I knew there was a movie called Purple Rain and an album but that was about all.
I was with my coworker on 4/21 when we heard on the radio that he died and I said to my coworker, "Prince was gay, right?" My coworker said, "Yeah, I think so." Obviously we had no clue about the man. That day and week I read a ton about him and was really fascinated by his work ethic, mysteriousness, showmanship, and guitar playing. I play guitar and was intrigued by how amazing of a guitarist he was.
The theater in the city of St. Cloud was playing Purple Rain that week so we decided to go. I didn't know anything about the movie but was blown away by it. What a performer. Lol at some of the acting (Apollonia). But the movie was awesome. The theater was packed and people were cheering once Prince appeared. When "I Would Die 4 U" was performed.......towards the end of the song when the lyric is repeated over and over......I lost it, sobbing uncontrollably. It was very surreal. I hadn't followed his career at all but felt something inside.....like he wrote this song knowing when he was gone that it would touch people in a way that cannot be explained. Also the moment during Baby I'm a Star when the camera shows Morris and Jerome jamming to the music really got me, too.
I don't know what makes people flock to an artist when they pass away. I even waited two months before buying my first P album to see if this interest would wear off, but it didn't. I only recently got into Bob Dylan's music (about 5 years ago). I probably would have done the same thing if Dylan would have passed away and if I hadn't been into him before. I'm not sure what drives that interest......a hipster thing to be a part of something or what, I don't know. I now own 21 Prince albums....started with Purple Rain.....listened to it for about a month straight then started from the beginning with For You and working my way forward. I'm on Graffiti Bridge now. I also have watched Cherry Moon and Graffiti Bridge and SOTT. Just finished Mayte's book.
We visited the grounds of Paisley Park last August and all of the memorials and tributes were amazing. Last month, we visited the Kiowa Trail site and being at the gate with the heart and peace sign (well, a Mercedes symbol? Why didn't he ever fix this?) was very dreamlike being at the place where he lived during that early 80s run of music. We then did the VIP tour of PP. Very awesome. I didn't read anything about the tour beforehand and was a little shocked that the urn was on display in the atrium. The soundstage is absolutely massive, wow. The Bentley and Plymouth Prowler were in there. The recording studios were really cool. I would think they would keep expanding the tour to get people coming back.......surely they will at some point let people see the vault, maybe the living quarters, bicycles, tour bus, etc. We are planning our next trip to do the general admission tour, see the Purple Rain house, the Galpin Blvd site, and PR "Take Me With U" train trestle in Henderson.
His death is one of a few moments in my life where I remember exactly where I was when hearing the news (along with 9/11 and another tragic moment in my life).

better late than never, right? you would have loved experiencing him in his prime though (and for that i'm grateful) there is so much music leaking it's way out now, so in a sense, a lot of us are kind of experiencing some new things with you.
i havent been to Paisley yet, though i'm hoping to make a trip by year's end.

Welcome aboard the Prince train! I'm very happy that another person has 'discovered' his music and is a fan. He truly was an amazing artist and human being. If you really want to see how powerful a performer he was look up the Sign 'O' The Times movie- he gets to use a much bigger stage than the one in Purple Rain and he uses just about every inch of that thing! SOTT will give you one of the best showcases of his talents as a musician and a band leader.

"Prince was gay, right?"
Like, REALLY that is what you came up with?

" I Will Die For You" it is so weird how he predicted things.

Curious on what there is to spoil?!?

We watched SOTT last week. I thought the stage performance was AMAZING! Better than Purple Rain movie. Even though it was obviously edited/queued with another recording.....the live performance in Rotterdam/Paisley Park or whatever the reasoning why the original footage wasn't used.
Also just received the PR Deluxe and starting the DVD live performance.

Is there a address to this place or whats the nearest cross street? And what color is the Bentley?
"Born in 1983, I missed Prince's most epic period." For some of us P was badd (awesome) then and badd during his whole life, in other words it just wasn't early career was awesome but his Whole career!
Also I see St Cloud is only about a hour from Minneapolis, one of the coldest baddest Artist/Musician to ever live virtually right in your back door, heehee, haha [Edited 7/11/17 10:35am]

Bentley was baby blue. 2006 model year I believe. The lighting in the soundstage was very dark so kind of hard to see the true colors.
And 1999 Plymouth Prowler, purple.

Not surprising that those born and raised in the state that he was so proud of and others knew him for, were the ones that didn't pay much attention to him or his work, until after he passed. The state of Minnesota only seemed to realize how big of a deal Prince was, when he passed and they saw how many adored and loved the man and his music, lighting up cities purple every where, and folks celebrating him and his music. Kind of a shame, since he always showed love for Minnesota, and was so proud of where he came from.

I am sure there are Minnesotans who didn't truly appreciate him to the fullest, but I can assure you that there are many more who absolutely adored him (and still do).....he always has been and always will be a BIG deal here. I can't remember a time when he wasn't the topic of conversation amongst friends, neighbors, newspapers and local magazines, radio talk, television news, etc etc. In general, Minnesotans (at least in my 40 years of experience here) have always been very proud of him and have had love and respect for him, even those who didn't particularly like his music. As a whole, I have never felt he was unappreciated or ignored here; far from it.

My heart isn't the only one that burst with pride because Prince was one of us. I adored him for many reasons, not the least of which was his loyalty to his home town/state. Prince knew he was very special to many of us in MN. His passing was felt deeply here, and the people miss him so very much. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN
