I became a huge fan of this song after watching Prince perform it live on opening night of the Musicology Tour in 2004. Prince had it broadcast live to many theatres around the country and it was great. Since then I have seen other shows from this toour and it is always great.
Here is one such performance..my favourite clip of Prince live which he sings it in a medley of "Th Question of U"/"Fallin"/ "The One"

Sing this song to a woman some time and see what happens.

I bow down in to his guitar playing. I this video. I thought it was interesting that he played "The One" on the Musicology Tour (2004) considering that he wrote the song for Mayte, but in 2004, he was married to Mani. ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS The Artist/New Power Generation "New Power Soul"
There are a couple of nice jams ("Come On," "Mad Sex"), and a sweet buttery soul ballad ("The One"), but ultimately this "Soul" provides more fodder for those who believe the Artist to be in dire need of an editor, producer or someone to separate the weak from the dope.

MTV ONLINE The Artist Formerly Known As Prince/New Power Generation
New Power Soul, on the other hand, is by far the most consistent album the Artist has released since the much-maligned, streamlined Batman soundtrack. Thankfully, it's also far better than that effort: leaving the soundtrack's stripped-down tone behind, NPS is a full-blown funk jam, notably light on guitars and heavy on thickly-textured grooves.
The goose-bump-inducing ballads include an almost-saccharine-but-still-beautiful "The One,"

On opening night. When it came to the line "My Mayte"..he just screamed. It was very effective. To All the Haters on the Internet

I think the Remix is far superior, I like the nice backing vocals Marva King (assuming its her) adds That's one of the things I'll miss most...he'd take a great song and play with it, didn't have to be perfect but made it into something else and had fun with it. I'm going to go through all my cds and look for the remix cd...Thanks for the reminder! ♡♡ "Great dancers are not great because of their technique, they are great because of their passion" -- Martha Graham

Strange choice of quote - not exactly positive, is it? I have that magazine. It's a pretty negative review. It ends with "more artistry next time, please". The mag also features a cover story titled "The Artist Formerly Known as Successful". That'll give you an idea about what kind of article it is... Oh and a "sexiest songs" top 50 with Prince no higher than 41. [Edited 8/11/17 6:36am]

I have had "The One" on repeat today. I love it. Prince performed this song live frequently, even after he and Mayte divorced, so he probably really liked the song. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

I remember him saying in an interview at the time that this song went from being a song about his wife, to being about creation, to being about God. I don't think it was exactly in those words, but along those lines, so it had a much deeper meaning for him, regardless of whether he was with Mayte or not.

Song is perfection, everything is perfect there falsetto, npg orchestra, fretless bass guitar, Mayte idea for a video, fact that Prince & Mayte shared the passion around this time, this is P at his peak imo... but does Prince has a bad ballad?
