We March Appreciation Thread

Something I've noticed and am curious about is the consistent backlash against the song when Prince fans discuss The Gold Experience. But in comparison to a lot of songs from that era, which were often too cringey in following then-current music trends, produced poorly, or felt like underwritten jam songs, this one just feels like classic P to me. It's well-produced with a nice mix of the analog and synthetic, it's effortlessly melodic - those pre-choruses are as classic Prince as they get in the best sense, and even though it has "inspirational" lyrics that can be called a bit corny, they're very stomachable and endearingly sincere (and, let's face it, he's been in that mode plenty of times in the '80s). The humbling universal narrative is especially a breath of fresh air coming out of that time period when his words were prone to being preachy, condescending or messianic.

Anyway, I'd say it's one of his better outings from the NPG years of '91-'96, and I'll take it over "Now," "Dolphin" or "Endorphinmachine" any day. I do understand if that backing vocal sample is annoying to some people. I personally don't mind it at all and have sort of grown endeared to it. Nona Gaye was a great presence in Prince's music, and her voice definitely fit into that Wendy & Lisa mold.

Sven I LOVE "We March"! One of my top favorite Prince songs. I've also noticed a .
lot of scorn here on the org for songs off The Gold Experience and I can't
.
understand why. This album has always been on heavy rotation for me. I love almost
.
every song on it. Plenty of good, funky Prince and I think you hit upon the exact
.
perfect way to describe the tone - "endearingly sincere" and "humble universal
.
narrative" really pinpoint exactly what I love about the lyrics. I'd love to hear
.
what specifically it is that org-ers who dislike The Gold Experience don't
.
like?

I have to say I'm often surprised at the hate this song receives as well, I don't mind it at all. It's not his greatest ever song but I find it considerably less cringeworthy than, say, Dolphin on the same album.

Better than Endorphinmachine is crazy talk though lol

I skip it about 75% of the time. I'd say off the top of my head it's my least liked track on TGE. I would say its mostly lyric content.

When this song was performed live the ending live was an awesome jam. Soundboard would do it justice. But like other live renditions the studio version doesn't do it justice. IMHO.

I think it's disliked mainly because it made the album ahead of other superior tracks, most notably Days Of Wild. Plus it sticks out as the only track on there with Kirky J drum programming.

.

Personally I wouldn't have it ahead of Dolphin. Or Endorphinmachine. Or Now but I don't hate it and agree the lyrics try to be 'inspirational' and uplifting

We March and Free The Music have the exact same beat.

This.

"We March" is a normal P track placed in one of the most consistent album of his post-80's.

If on TGE instead of WM, "Days Of Wild" would be a classic.

I really like We March. While it's not the strongest song on the album, it's still very good and I don't skip it. I like the message it promotes.

Agreed 100%. I didn't know We March was a "bad song" until I read it here
