PR- Deluxe - Disc 2 - Songs in order of preference

We now have had over a week to digest Disc 2 of PR - Deluxe. Rank in order of preference from your favorite song to your least favorite song. Commentary is welcome. Please rank the song for the version that is on this release, not other versions of the song.

Note to Moderators: Please don't subsume this under the general Disc2 discussion. That discussion has died down considerably and this specific thread would likely get lost there.

1. Computer Blue - This is pure Prince genius. I never loved the original album version, but now..

2. We Can Fuck - Yes, other versions are really good too, but this is a blast to listen to.

3. Wonderful Ass - Not that different from the unreleased versions, but a great song.

4. Electric Intercourse - Great song. Actually like having this version as long as we eventually get a better sounding release of the live version.

5. Father's Song - Showcases Prince's versatility. Nice way to settle back down in the afterglow after the long workout of WCF wink .

6. Possessed - Again, enjoy hearing such a different version even though love them all.

7. Love and Sex - This is growing on me and may wind up higher. Love the urgency of his voice!

8. Roadhouse Garden - I can't believe this is this low because I really like this song. Prefer it to

the heralded live version.

9. Dance Electric - This is the one where I really miss the other versions when I listen to it.

10. Katrina's Paper Dolls - It is catchy!

11. Velvet Kitty Cat - A throwaway that I never skip because it captures Prince's sense of humor.

12. Our Destiny - Vocals not on par with the Prince vocals of the other songs. Not bad at all.

Computer blue is just flat out brilliant. So much going on in that song, and even with it being as long as it is I just start it over as soon as it’s done. The original was already one of my favorites, this version takes it to another level.

Let me start by saying that I love PR Deluxe... I really do think they did a great job on this (in general).. yes yes yes, I know the weird sound at 0:03 of Erotic City is pretty rotten... Yes I know it didn't sell a million copies in it's first week.

But overall: I really like having all the versions of the songs, I think the packaging looks cool (just a cool update) and Disc 2 is INCREDIBLE.

And selling 60,000 in this day and age for a 30 year old album is nothing to sneeze at. Especially since most people bought this album just 12 months ago.. and as a reality check... it is probably only us crazy Prince fans that want 'remastered' or B-Sides.. Yes, this is a shame.. but kind of the truth...

People's attention spans are miniscule when it comes to music now.. it has become very disposable.. And for us to assume that these reissues would sell millions is probably a bad assumption.... They can probably still make $ on these types of projects, there is a decent amount of 'us' out there...

ANYHOOOOOOOO....... here is my take..

1. We Can Fuck - The screaming backup vocals by him make me so crazy, I cant believe how great this is

2. Computer Blue - Just Plain WOW

3. Wonderful Ass - perfect

4. Dance Electric - I really really like it.. just a little looonnnnnng but Great

5. Katrina's Paper Dolls - I dont know why people rag on this one.. i LOVE it

6. Father's Song - beautiful

7. Possesed - really glad to finally have this

8. Love & Sex - I dont know what my problem is, but I havent gotten into this one like everyone else

9. Electric Intercourse - has never been my favorite

10. Velvet Kitty Cat - it is Ok

11. Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden - im just not a fan of this. I love W&L, but this one has not grown on me like I thought it would

1. We Can Fuck
This is a, dare I say it, masterpiece. It something that only Prince could do or get away with. It's like Do Me, Baby meets International Lover. It starts of as a kind of regular(ish) song, then it decends into maddness (the amazing shouty/ reverby bit) and then into that classic vaulnerability in the third, until we get a reprise of that sinister/ dirty vibe established in the begining.

2. Computer Blue (Hallway Speach Version)
What can I say? The long version is another masterpiece. It's a totally different vibe from the album and 7 minute edits. Can you imagine a video for this? The visuals this track paints is just incredible.

3. Electric Intercourse (Studio Version)
It wasn't what I expected, but fuck; it's still pretty great. The piano is majestic and the synth bass is powerful.

4. The Dance Electric (Early Version)

While it doesn't quite have the power of the more developed version, I think I prefer this one. I'm just not sure why.

5. Our Destiny (Lisa Vocal)/ Roadhouse Garden (Early Version)
The first is just a sweet track. When the second leaked, I was just blown away. It's simplicity just does something to me. It's everything I had imagined it to be up until that point and more. Now I just want to heard the version that was rerecorded and with Clare Fishcer's strings.

6. Wonderful Ass
It's a classic. And it's nice to have it in this quality, with that simple, yet effective bass clearly defined.

7. Love And Sex
The main song itself is still growing on me. The scream at the begining is what makes me keep listening to it. I don't agree with those who say it was worthy of this era though.

8. Possessed (Rerecorded Version)

I prefer the bootlegged version. But, it was nice to hear the vocal intended for the much-bootlegged instrumental version we've had since forever.

9. Father's Song
The music world is a better place for having rince instrumentals. I can only hope that this and God Love Theme is an indication that there are more compositions from this era. Yes, it's repedative; but the gradual build-ups make it something pretty special.

10. Katrina's Paper Dolls (Solo Recording)
It's okay. It sounds like something that Vanity would have recorded. I'd be pleased to hear the latter versions. There is something slightly addictive about this though, I must say.

11. Velvet Kitty Cat (Early Version)
While it was recrded for The Time... It doesn't seem worthy even for them. With that said, I'd be pretty keen to hear the rerecorded rockier version.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

.

4. Possessed - classic track

.

5. Velvet Kitty Cat - slight but fun pop

.

6. Father's Song - beautiful

.

7. Love and Sex - not much of a song, but love the energy

.

8. Electric Intercourse - good vocal, song itself gets a bit monotonous

.

9. We Can Fuck - interesting during its last several minutes, but benefited from editing for 'GB'

.

10. Wonderful Ass - always thought this was a crud song

.

11. The Dance Electric - goes nowhere and takes its time doing it

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Wonderful A$$ - flower 10! flower (grown to surpassed all of my favorite's. Finally a clean version!)

Electric Intercourse - 10 (My favorite version! Surpasses the live for me)

We can F**k - 10 (Insane journey )

Computer Blue Hallway Speech - 10 (at first I wasn't sure I'd like this as much, but man... It's a master piece!)

Love And Sex - 10 (Fun and Crazy at the same time! Intense.)

Katrina's Paper Doll - 9 (weird but cool. Makes me feel like I'm in on a private innuendo between Prince and Vanity. I like bluegangsta's concept that it sounds like Vanity should have recorded it. That would have been interesting!)

The dance Electric - 9

Possessed - 8

Father's Song - 8 (Simply Beautiful... I just realized that Prince has made me like instrumental pieces. eek )

Our Destiny/ Roadhouse Garden - 7.5

Velvet Kitty Kat - 7 (Vanity should be singing this one. I'm beginning to like it though. It's growing...)

Obviously you really like Dance Electric here. Curious to know how you think it compares to the unreleased versions (if you heard them)?

If we use "songs I can't get out of my head" as a rule, it's:
-We Can Fuck (even though this still isn't my favourite version and I just keep thinking of George Clinton; hearing the GB version first sorta spoiled it for me.)
-Wonderful Ass
-Our Destiny
-Roadhouse Garden (with a stronger chorus, it would have been excellent. It's a bit monotonous, but still catchy.)
-The Dance Electric
-Katrina's Paper Dolls
-Velvet Kitty Cat
-Computer Blue (it's great of course, but I have heard it lots of times already.)
-Possessed (I find it just wandering around with no real structure or melody. Doesn't move me at all. I don't care much for endless jams that are nothing but synths and drum machines.)
-Father's Song

I've been listening to Disc 2 on repeat for two weeks now and it's as close to a perfect Prince "album" as it can get, in my opinion. The weaker tracks are still enjoyable, and the stronger ones are just amazing.

1. The Dance Electric. I love this in all its versions.

2. Computer Blue. No need to explain.

3. Love and Sex. So much fun.

4. Electric Intercourse. Not what I expected, but fantastic song. Hopefully we will get the live version with studio overdubs one day (if it exists). Until then, I am happy listening to this one.

5. Father's Song. Again, not what I expected, but so huntingly beautiful...

6. Possessed. It's so different from the older, slower version that it feels like a completely different song. The last two minutes or so are fantastic.

7. We Can Fuck. Again, great song

8. Wonderful Ass. I absolutely love it, but I've had it with great sound quality for a while.

9. Roadhouse Garden. Like Wonderful Ass, we have had it for a wile, so it wasn't exciting.

10. Katrina's Paper Dolls. It's ok, but it didn't live up to the expectations.

11. Velvet Kitty Cat. This had found its perfect status as "cute silly little outtake". Not bad, but one of the weakest in the set.

12. Our Destiny. Lisa, some day we'll be together. Lisa, it's ok. Just don't sing main vocals in a Prince song...

Surprised how much I really didn't care for KPD. Having never heard it before, I had high hopes the better songs would be the ones that were not really circulating. Not in this case.

All right, I'm gonna try.

  1. Computer Blue - Very cool to have this long version, even if it was wise to shorten it for the actual album.
  2. We Can Fuck - Unlike some, I don't really have anything against the Graffiti Bridge version, but this is better. I do wish the finger cymbals weren't so prominent in the mix.
  3. The Dance Electric - Always dug the André Cymone version, and I really miss the guitar stabs from that, but I can't mark it down for being familiar. It's a great song.
  4. Wonderful Ass - Rounds out what I feel are the real highlights of the disc. Could have easily been a great B-side back then.
  5. Love and Sex - This and the next three could change positions pretty easily.
  6. Electric Intercourse
  7. Possessed - A bit repetitive--I assume it, like several others of these, would have been edited had it been released as a B-side. But I like it.
  8. Roadhouse Garden
  9. Katrina's Paper Dolls - Lyrically weak, but it has some catchy bits.
  10. Father's Song - It's fine, but it doesn't particularly stand out for me.
  11. Velvet Kitty Kat - A trifle, but fun, along the lines of "Horny Toad."
  12. Our Destiny - Eh.

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

If you can add value to someone's life then why not. Especially if it colors their days...
