How long did it take for Prince to record songs??

For example, the Purple Rain Remaster version of We Can
F%ck. It's a 10 minute+ monster jam with Prince playing
most or all of the instruments and also features a pretty
complex background harmony part by what sounds like Wendy
and Lisa and Susannah (and Jill?).

Did he record that in a day??

That one took two days:

Initial tracking for Prince's original version took place on 31 December 1983 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, as We Can Fuck (the day after Erotic City and She's Always In My Hair), with additional work the following day, 1 January 1984.

www.princevault.com generally can answer these kinds of questions. My guess is that very few of Prince's songs took more than a day to record, as he seemed to always know exactly what he wanted when he entered the studio.

It probably depends on how much he aimed to put down on tape. Susan Rogers has noted that Prince would record a song, all the parts, and it'd be a 12 or 15 hour day. Then he'd record vocals, by himself, so she'd leave out of the studio to another room and take a quick nap. But then once the song was done, he wanted to master it. The days stretched into 20-hour sessions sometimes. Then he'd go sleep a while and come back and do it again. I would imagine a longer song could take longer, because if he's playing through the whole song for each instrument take... that can add up.

But other songs, it seems, he'd lay some basic tracks down, then shelve it a while, work on it again later, or give it to W&L to finish.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
