Prince was a fan of Bette Davis & Betty Davis. I suspect she knows who he was talking about. . They think he came up with it? Prince did come up with it for the song. And why Rev Ike? . Prince didn't know him since he was a teen.... but what does that have to do with certain behaviour? Lisa was discussing old movies when she referenced Prince asking her to sing like Bette Davis. Was Bette Davis known for her singing? Or was Bette Davis the singer known for loud screaming singing style? Just think about it for a minute. Lisa is clueless. Prince came up with the preaching at the front of the song and while Prince may not have come up with one note for the organ part it is used often in Baptist churches while minister's are speaking and if you know anything about bootleg preachers like Rev Ike that is were Prince got the idea from. Bobby and Fink are clueless on this part. There is an interview with Jerome recently were he explains that he first met Prince when they were teens and he would let him into parties his brother Terry Lewis was having and Prince had no money to get into. I can go and find links to back up everything I am saying.

Sorry but Prince's dad kept him away from the music and the scene. Almost like his character in the movie. the Kid also did not want Apollonia in his life via the music. He wanted to keep his romantic partners away from the scene. _____ Realising both Tyka and Prince "were musically inclined, Nelson encouraged them and Prince blossomed, writing his first tune, "Funk Machine" on his father's piano when he was seven." https://www.google.co.uk/...html%3Famp After John left, his piano stayed behind and Prince used to play it. Princes father also bought him a guitar. There were difficulties but it seems John encouraged both his kids to be musicians. . [Edited 6/30/17 5:47am] Baby, you're a star.

I used to not care for Wendy very much but I've come to love her after hearing some of her stories after Prince's death. She sounds like a lot of fun and someone I would love to be around and clown with. I'm glad to see so many of y'all rejecting that she and Lisa introduced Prince to jazz because Lord knows, I blamed her for years considering that Prince seemed to make his drastic change in sound after she came on board. I knew she had been into different types of music and so was Lisa but had assumed that Lisa simply kept her mouth shut and did as she was told until Wendy came along and then there were two of them to gang up and influence him to change his sound. . I've grown to love the late 80s albums over the years. Hell, I loved them back then too but they weren't what I wanted though, I wanted the cold Minneapolis style Prince of the early 80s. But seeing how he gravitated more and more towards jazz in his later years to the point that he started sounding like Doc Severinson's "Tonight Show" Band, I'm glad I can stop blaming Wendy because I've grown to love her. I mean, damn, just look how he ruined "Extraloveable" with all that jazz. . . .

Yeah, introductions of styles into Purple Music in the 80s was magic. Because Prince was in a bubble of his own world of music. Which made it easy to have such a distinct sound.
But later one he was way open to stuff, and by 1988 the bubble was gone

BillieBalloon said: http://diffuser.fm/prince-sgt-pepper/ "Wendy & Lisa took him to a jazz place." Really Bobby? Prince was the son of two jazz musicians and was named after his fathers jazz band. "John Lewis Nelson (June 29, 1916 – August 25, 2001),[1] also known as his stage name Prince Rogers, was an American jazz musician and songwriter. He was the father of musicians Prince and Tyka Nelson and a credited co-writer on some of his son's songs." Mattie was also a jazz musician. I take issue with this disingenous comment by Bobby. You know Prince heard jazz whilst still nestled in his mothers womb. What is Bobby talking about? . [Edited 6/29/17 10:51am] This is kind of odd to me. The Rev feel that they need to prove they influenced Prince and introduced him to all these different things. Like Wendy and Lisa hipped him to jazz. Seriously Bobby? Paisley Park is in your heart

Stop.
Just because Prince's father did a style of the music(there are different styles of Jazz) like other genre of music. Prince was only exposed to his dads music in part. Not in full. But the age of 10 his parents were split and he was living with his mother.

exaggerated title. . Prince talked about the limited amount of music they were exposed to in Minni, and outside of the radio, anything else came from getting a hold of album. I've read many interviews where Prince and others talked about those early days and Jazz was not a regular on the spin. . Mattie & John Nelson were basically done musically by the time they started having kids. And Mattie was done when she divorced John and remarried. U don't know if he was born listening to jazz.

I am not the one who took it out if context, Bobby never put it in a context and thats why i started the thread to ask what he was talking about. There are plenty if other threads for you to dawdle on. Baby, you're a star.

John was not done by the time he had the kids. He collaborated with Prince, About his father: "That deeper understanding helped spill over into a number of songwriting collaborations between the two during the ’80s, including cuts from Purple Rain, Parade, Under the Cherry Moon, and Batman. “We have the same hands. We have the same dreams. We write the same lyrics, sometimes. Accidentally, though. I’ll write something and then I’ll look up and he’ll have the same thing already written,” Prince told Ebony." http://diffuser.fm/prince-ladder/ Who says John was done? Arent they releasing some music from him even now? John continued to make music long after the kids came along. . [Edited 6/30/17 9:09am] Baby, you're a star.

"For “The Ladder,” from 1985’s Around the World in a Day, he shared co-writing credit with a creative partner he knew quite well: his father, John L. Nelson."
Why would Prince look to Wendy and Lisa for a jazz tip when his father is on hand right there. . [Edited 6/30/17 9:26am] Baby, you're a star.

"Our personalities are a lot alike, but his music is like nothing I’ve ever heard before. It’s more complex. A lot of beautiful melodies are hidden beneath the complexity. That’s why it takes me to pull all that out. That’s why we work so well together.” Prince said this about his dad during the 80s when P was in his 20s. Baby, you're a star.

I'd be interested to know how much of Father's Song John Nelson composed, I think most of us agree it's a pretty nice tune and I'd say it leans heavily towards Jazz. From the playing I saw of John's on that show in the early 90s, he looked like he was a bebop pianist to me, lots of soloing in the right hand, lots of single notes, runs. It would be interesting to hear some more of his stuff. I'll always believe though that Prince's earliest influences were Jazz and Gospel. The Jazz chords were in most of his songs and the gospel chords would just show up in the damndest places but they are there.

Thanks for this it is good to hear a musicians input on the effect jazz had on Prince's music so the so-called musicians in the Revolution appear to be clueless about. They need to stop embarrassing themselves.

he said in the ebony interview in 86 that he was more strict with melody than his father was, I thought at the time that he knew himself because his melodies were usually very, very simple in those days. 1999 is nursery rhyme simple, let''s go crazy and many others.

John's career was not what he hoped. He hoped his children would go on and be what he couldn't.
His father came back into Prince's life(not really his mother) around 1984/85 John L Nelson is deceased. Yes that makes him done.

Prince was alienated from his father after he put him out at age 12. John L Nelson came back into Prince's life around 1984/85 and then there was a period where stuff between Prince's father and sister Sharon (like that 1990ish documentary exposing the Prince of Darkness) put some serious distance between them. I don't believe Prince went to his fathers funeral.
