Ask yourself how you shelved The Black Album, and that's your answer.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

.
Mine are organized by release date, so PRDE would come after HNR2 and 4Ever.
All should follow me, original OCD. Make sure you out little numbers on them.

Yes, by release date works if we are talking about entire albums. But, I'll admit that often, if I know the recording date of a song, I'll put the song in the chronological order of its recording date. So, on my iTunes, I have the Black Album and Lovesexy as one playlist/album because of when they were recorded and because they are thematic companion pieces. Also, I have "Dance Electric" on my Around the World in a Day playlist/album because it was recorded after Purple Rain was released, iirc. Then, sometimes, I arranged them by a feeling. As such, The Truth is not on my Crystal Ball playlist/album but with Chaos and Disorder, and the only reason I have for grouping The Truth with Chaos and Disorder is because they sound more alike even though The Truth was officially released with Crystal Ball. And, don't get me started with what I have on my Gold playlist/album as opposed to what's on my Come playlist/album. Let’s just say that neither is arranged quite like their official releases.

File as latest release. If it makes you feel better, tell yourself it's because of Disc 2 having its release in 2017.

I'm OCD enough to insist on physical.media so the CDs are filed by release date.
The albums are rearranged regularly but I can't bring myself to open them.
We bought a digital turntable and I need to get busy.
But OCD.
My iTunes playlists are alphabetical for ease in scrolling through.

After the original.

I mean, if you really have OCD. Release dates should not matter so much to the obsessive, as they can be easily verified with one single Wikipedia check. Trying to figure out the actual recording dates and the cultural historical context should fuel neurotic behaviour way more efficiently. You'll keep wondering if you're really made the right choice or not with the placement, which is what you really want. PR Deluxe isn't even the optimal release for it - Crystal Ball and The Vault... Old Friends 4 Sale are way better.

I replaced Purple Rain with it in my iTunes library, but I think I'll put it after my copies of the original Purple Rain.

I put mine with the other versions of Purple Rain rather than after HnR2. Just make sure the different PR versions are chronological (Ex. Orig, Digipak version, Remaster)

This is what is known as a "first world" problem.

For me this would go next to the original CD and Vinyl for Purple Rain.

In my database it would be logged as 1984 (after all that is the recording) but the release version will be labelled as the 2017 Reissue.

I can then search by recording date but also see a chronologically list of releases.

Without doubt, for me, the black album goes after SOTT and before Lovesexy. Musically those three title are as one.

Similarly Wendy And Lisa's 2 CD re-issue last week will go in as 1990 with the two CD formats from 1990 but will be labelled as a 2017 Special Edition.

Touché. That's where I live though.

Fuck. If I was in the third world, I may not even have a shelf. They'd be piled on the floor. mad

LOL. I had the same dilemma. Eventually I settled on the end, as a 2017 release.

Why? Two reasons.

Firstly, Because I like the idea of my Prince music growing, rather than just getting fatter.

Secondly, by adding any new release on the end, I'll stop having future first world dilemmas. Prince did not structure releases when he recording things. Example - If the Roadhouse Garden Album finally gets released, where do you stick it, when the tracks span PR, ATWIAD and Parade? He didn't record in the 'eras' that we use to define his discography.

Duh. Between 1999 and ATWIAD. At least that's the way I'm rolling.

well... it's a 1984 album, remastered in 2015, released in 2017...

.

Personally, I went with 2017 and kept the original CD release in itunes. (as well as the foefur remaster, which is on the list to be removed)

Nah... Date albums were originally released, all the way.

Black Album goes before Lovesexy, Purple Rain Deluxe after 1999 (but after the original PR CD).

The date is was originally released, but this new one would come after the original.

My Black Album falls right after SOTT -- not in 1994. Technically it was "released" in 1987, although pulled from final sale. Makes no sense to have this in 1994, to me anyway.

So for those not sticking it in the 2017 category, where will you stick a potential future vault album made up of tracks from 81-89?? Just curious smile

I would stick that one right after Batman - since it's "up to and including 1989". smile
