Would the original PR tracklist have worked? So since Father's Song was released and Wednesday leaked, we have heard all the tracks from the original tracklisting of Purple Rain: November 7, 1983 configuration
So my question is, if When Doves Cry/Take Me With U never existed, and this was the final tracklisting, do you think the album/movie would have been as much of a cultural icon as it is today? "Like the drummer said, you got to die."

I find Wednesday to be the weakest track ever associated with Purple Rain (including all the deluxe tracks). I love Father's Song, but it's not WDC. So it would have still been a great album, but the one we got is much better.

The music in general was/is electric alive and still so ahead of it's time.
If they were able to release a 'Soundtrack' album Wednesday would have worked better on that.
I don't think tha configuration would have been the best in that is not how it played out in the move. Father's Song in the script was still right before Computer Blue

Not a credible tracklist, and an unfortunate example of deficient research. . This is merely an assembly of the material submitted for use in the impending film project, for review by the producers and corporate interests, about two weeks before principal photography began. . Sequenced with respect to presentation requirements and space limitations. . Anyone who believes this config. seriously was about to be committed to (consumer) vinyl needs to be committed themselves. .

I'm not sure if we've really heard "Wednesday" and "Father's Song" in their proper form. Both sound like demos that just give some idea what the final recording could sound like.

No. The above configuration is good but it evolved for the better. Don't get me wrong, I love the longer versions of LGC and Computer Blue (and The Beatutiful Ones for that matter but Purple Rain, as released, was pretty perfect - not an ounce of fat, not an ounce of filler...

What i don't understand is why it was so short when he has all these other tracks now on disc 2 he could have also released! Maybe to create more impact? But even so...leaving such amazing tracks off?!

No it wouldnt. WDC is of course an epic, universally appealing song and Take Me With You is somewhat magical in its shimmering glory with Apolonia's out of tune vocals that make it adorable.

Not as well as the final masterpiece. I am so glad Wednesday leaked. Its a cute little song but doesn't live up to the fantasy I created in my head over it.

It could have talked he place of Velvet Kitty Cat in the deluxe disc, but it's not a big problem that it didn't...

I could bring up in this context that the sound quality gets worse towards the end of each side on an LP. I think that's the reason why side A on Purple Rain has a "noisy track" at the end ("Darling Nikki") and side B ends with just some string parts and audience noise (the outro of "Purple Rain"). I think Prince took that factor into account when choosing the material for ATWIAD and Parade as well. [Edited 6/28/17 13:17pm]
