Purple Rain Deluxe - POSSESSED - Anyone else think this is a remix version?

The more I listen to it, the more it feels like a remix of an original to me. Pretty damn amazing song.

Whatever, it's brilliant. Superior to the other boot version in my opinion. Those lyrics and vocals in the second half - genius.

Honestly, I had the same feeling. the music doens't sound like the typical 83'sound but more like a Batman remix.

I love that it reminds you of a Batman remix. I was listening to it in the car and it reminded me of The Future!

Errr, no. I believe it's the same one we've had only as an instrumental for years (but now with vocals, obviously).

No, it doesn't sound uncharacteristic of the period to me. The instrumentation is fairly sparse, with the heavy phaser effect dominating the whole thing. What makes you think it's a remix?

It's absolutely characteristic of the time period. Listen to When Doves Cry again.

Yep, as Laydown and others have said, it's not a remix. There are two distinct versions of this. And this version on the deluxe is what you hear in Purple Rain, when Morris is trying to chili sauce up on Apollonia, and before "The Beautiful Ones". Hell, it's been out in bootleg form for a bit, at least chunks of it. I do prefer the funkier version with the band. But no, it's not a remi.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I believe Prince wrote and laid down the funky band version of Possessed first and probably held it back as he says "Satanic Lust" instead of "Demonic Lust" in the Purple Rain Deluxe and for the reference of "Pussy getting wet," "Pussy Sugar," and "Messing with a Nigga's head" from submission to WB. Back in the early to mid 80's, that might have been too much for the consevative ears of some people to take in. Now days talk like that barely bats an eye. I enjoy the original band version better myself but the instrumental with lyrics version is pretty good too.

Nobody is disputing the time period, it is definitely from 1983, however compared to all the boot versions we have of Possessed from that same time period, it has a remix quality to it. Falsetto vs regular voice, many musical variations and differences than original, different vocal segments than original, etc.

So not a stretch to say what we got on PR Deluxe could be one of possibly many remixes of the original song from that time period.

If this was listed as a remix on PR Deluxe, nobody would be disputing it.

Now before you all get your panties in a bunch and jump to conclusions....yes, I love it.

Actually, the full instrumental version is included in excellent sound quality in "Out Takes", one of the oldest bootleg CD in my collection (probably pressed in 1989/1990).

At 7:24 of lenght without vocals, anyway, I ever found it boring and repetitive.

I agree, this is the version in Purple Rain, I agree, this is from 1983, but this does not mean it is not a remix of the original.

Are you saying that simply because this version was in Purple Rain that it is NOT a remix? If so, that makes no sense, Prince can choose whatever he wants.

Are you saying because this has been on bootleg, that it is not a remix version? We cannot know that. It was never labeled as such, but that doesn't mean anything on a boot.

All I am saying is this. If you take the vocal version we had all these years, which I consider the original, and compare it to the PR Deluxe version, the PR Deluxe version has all the hallmarks of a remix.

I agree with you, I like the original (or funkier version as you say) better, but I love em both.

Yeah, what are people talking about? It's even in the movie in one section, isn't it? (The intrumental version that sounds the same).

I was listening to it and seeing how it accidentally fit the ending of Star Wars back in 1992.

It's not a remix because even the vocals are totally different. A remix takes existing elements, moves them around, changes things, and makes it familiar yet different. That's different than an Extended version, which is what he did with stuff like "Mountains" or "Kiss" by adding sections onto it later. Same with "I Wish U Heaven". A proper remix is more whatn Shep did with "Hot Thing", or Orbit did with "The Future".

Prince often added vocals, etc., but he literally re-recorded this whole damn thing. That's not a remix. That's just ...well, a re-recording. We do sorta know it as standard fair in Princeville. Hasn't even "Irresistible Bitch" had a couple of different recordings? "Guitar" did (thank God for the latter version). "The Dance", "U're Gonna See Me" - those were re-recorded. Not remixed.

None of what's in the version we have on PRD is in the funkier version that I recall. One is a band workout, one is some trippy shit you listen to on weed or acid while getting your dick sucked and your asshole licked simultaneously. Either way, I do think this version was appropriate for the PRD release, since it was in the movie. But the funkier version that the band used in concerts would have been nice somewhere in the mix. Maybe it'll show up on 1999 remaster, should that happen at all.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yes, if this version https://www.youtube.com/w...9XmxcI2xJM showed up one day I would be a very happy man.

The vocals for TMBGITW were re-recorded as well, do you not consider the Mustang 'Mix' a different mix of the original version?

Much like Possessed on PR Deluxe, Beautiful, and TMBGITW Mustang Mix, all with re-recorded vocals, are NOT the original version, but a different mix of the original.

So to say Possessed on PR Deluxe is a different mix of the original is not off base at all.

Those mixes were entirely new recordings just like Possessed and Universal Love. In the 80s, they would be rerecordings, but the concept of the remix has been redefined along the way.

Mustang Mix is certainly a different take or mix. Isn't that the one that's slower and more seductive sounding? Again, in Princeville, the lines of remix and extended are often blurred. It's usually Prince just having an orgy on the soundboard and then we have an EP full of all sorts of goodies. New Power Generation, Cream, Gett Off, TMBGITW, are great examples.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Wha?? Everyone is disputing the time period, this is the 1984 recording. They got it wrong in the liner notes.
