I see that Possessed doesn't get too much love on this thread. I like it even though I like the other version better. It's still a good song and IMHO if that song was released in 83 or 84 black radio would have played the shit out of it why in God's name do u wanna make me cry

Its good but ...the production of the other one was just a little better to me. This is more fitting for the album however because this was the one that was in the movie. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

There's been a fair amount of love for it--on the earlier thread, before the actual separate threads for each disc. However, it's been tempered by the amount of love people have for a leaked version of the track that has extra guitar and vocals, so that they're let down by this one, since they expected that one. The leak was already pretty good quality sound, though, so I'm happy with this on its own merits.

It's right up there with the live versions, and I definitely like it more than the previous studio version bootlegs. The disc 2 one has great urgency and really interesting musical landscape. Disc 2 is worth the price of admission for this whole package. I was a little worried that I wouldn't like this disc, particularly after I heard the three tracks released before the full package. Plus I have enough boots to have heard versions of possessed, the dance electric, we can fuck/funk, and computer blue (hallway speech). That didn't leave much new material. But it turns out that the tracks I hadn't heard before are great, and the new (to my ears) versions are mostly better than what I heard before. The order of the tracks isn't great, but that's a very minor concern.
1. The Dance Electric 8/10 This is good, but way too repetitive. The vocals are passionate in places, but they drag a bit elsewhere. The best is cool, a monster groove, but then it doesn't go anywhere. Maybe it could've been a hit for P back in the day with a radio edit and then a longer version on a 12" or as an album track. 2. Love and Sex 10/10 Fantastic. I love the vocal delivery. The lyrics are interesting. The sha-la-la-la is cool. Disc 2 should have started with this song, imo. 3. Computer Blue (hallway) 10/10 This is a great, epic track. I love the three distinct sections of the guitar solo. First, there's the part where Wendy is on her knees in the movie. Then there's the father's song, very melodic section. And then this longer version adds a wild and free section after he yells "breakdown". The hallway speech reminds me in some odd way of the Doors. There is some cheesiness to this long version ("wave your hands in the air"), but the awesomeness of 95% of the track make up for it. I, like many others on the Org, have been spoiled by listening to this as a bootleg many times. As a result, I'm not playing this as much as I expected I would. 4. Electric Intercourse 7/10 The wobbly falsetto gets old fast. I don't feel much passion. The whole thing just pales in comparison to the live at First Ave version. I'm really glad this was replaced by The Beautiful Ones. 5a. Our Destiny 5/10 This is my least favorite track on the whole deluxe set. The vocals are just not up to par, from the muddy mix to Lisa's relatively weak delivery. And even the music isn't great. 5b. Roadhouse Garden 9/10 This is great. It's sparse in terms of instrumentation, which works ok because Prince's vocals are really strong and the lyrics are cool. Putting this on the back end of Our Destiny is a real shame. 6. Possessed 10/10 Wow. This is awesome. It's my favorite version, followed by the live versions, and then the studio bootlegs. The vocals really communicate a possessed, infatuated, and desperate mood. I love it. And the music is fantastic. It sounds way ahead of its time. The previous studio bootlegs always seemed like an unfinished demo, lacking punch. The guitar and drums were cool but too low energy for the lyrical content. With this new version, I was disappointed for about 30 seconds because it wasn't bringing the James Brown funk I was expecting, but then I quickly understood the brilliance of this disc 2 version. 7. Wonderful Ass 10/10 The interplay of the beat, keyboard, and guitar on this are awesome. It gets my toes tapping, my legs bouncing, and then my whole body jamming with the music. I already have it as a bootleg, but I'm listening to it a lot anyway. The only thing stopping this from being a hit, imo, is the cheeky title and chorus (see what I did there ) 8. Velvet Kitty Cat 9/10 Yes, it's kind of slight, but it's better than what I expected. I like the new rockabilly vocal delivery. 9. Katrina's Paper Dolls 10/10 This is really cool. There's a nice melody in the chorus that makes me think this could do decently on radio, not a #1 but more like a #20 or so which would give the whole set a little more exposure. The lyrics do a nice job of communicating sadness. 10. We Can Fuck 10/10 This is awesome, deep funk. I already like the Grafitti Bridge version which follows the first 5 plus minutes of this pretty closely. The rehearsal bootleg is cool, but this disc 2 version is my favorite. The pillow talk is cool, definitely better than the Do Me Baby stuff. The groove on this is just jamming. I'm bopping my head and feet as I type, and the song isn't even playing. 11. Father's Song 7/10 This is ok. I like the main melody that made it into Computer Blue, but there's not much else happening and the instrumentation is pretty clunky. This is a bit of letdown after the previous several tracks. This disc has a lot of great songs. It doesn't hold together as a separate album, nor does that appear to be the intention. I question the connection of some of these to Purple Rain, especially Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden which sound to me like a better fit with Around the World in a Day. But those are minor issues when we get to hear so many good, previously unreleased songs. [Edited 6/26/17 23:28pm] "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

Maybe Mathieu Bitton (Tangerine17) has some info regarding why The Dance Electric on the set is not the finished version (IIRC he said it was taken directly from the master, so maybe he knows the reason behind the choice)... [Edited 6/27/17 3:27am]

Excuse me if it has been asked before, but... who actually wrote Fathers's Song? According to both film and reissue's credits, it was John L. Nelson, but it seems that Princevault doesn't think so. Until yesterday, it was a Prince song, now it's co-written by father and son. [Edited 6/27/17 10:27am]

We Can F*ck is awesome. Title makes you think it may be gimmicky.... quite the opposite. This is greatest hits material. I'm actually quite blown away by all the unreleased tracks, I'm now trying to understand how he picked his tracks when they were all so solid.

I'm so glad We Can Fuck was included. Al the holier than though fams the last 10 years mimicking Prince's conversion to abstaining from "bad" language fucking annoy me. It'll be delicious seeing them dismiss that sentiment now and trip over this nasty delicious stuff. WCF is demo bliss

I wonder what is God's opinion on this? I guess P knew they could release this one day after he had changed and if something happen to him (expired) So out of his control.

1. The Dance Electric: I loved this song already a lot when Andre Cymone release it on his AC album. This one has Prince singing, which is very nice to have. It also seems to be an earlier version musically (although I didn't do a 1 on 1 comparison to be honest), the beat sounds somewhat different to me which is interesting to me. I don't care the song goes on for 11.30 minutes, this groove is so strong!! 10/10 2. Love and Sex: Great jam, although a bit busy. I like the Linndrum beat, the bass, the passionate vocals, the synths, the guitar with all the effects, classic Prince shizzle! What snare sound is this though? It doesn't sound like the stock Linnndrum snare to me. Did he double it with a live snare maybe? Or did he use another snare EPROM in the Linndrum? 8/10 3. Computer Blue (hallway version): Fantastic, absolutely amazing to hear in this quality! I am also very happy about the fact I haven't worn out too many bootlegs in the past (because I find it hard to enjoy lower quality recordings). This really pays off for me now that these former bootleg tracks will all (hopefully) become available in decent studio quality. I haven't played these songs to death yet in low quality, so this gives me the advantage of not really knowing songs like this hallway version and be really able to enjoy them as 'new' songs in decent quality. Yay!!! 10/10 4. Electric Intercourse: this version doesn't really sound finished to me. This is a recording where the Linndrum sounds pretty poor and that is very rare for Prince. The snare sound is totally shit! Besides that I enjoy having it, it is a pretty decent Prince song. I would enjoy it more if it had a better mix. The song itself reminds me a bit of International Lover, which is one of my least favorite songs from 1999. I have always liked his mid- or uptempo funk shit more than his ballads (there are some exceptions though). 7/10 6. Posessed: Pure voodoo magic, I love this one!! Much more interesting than the live renditions to me. I am loving the kickass Linndrum electrofunk pattern, with the cowbell pattern indeed reminding me of The Future. The song has a certain 'creepy' vibe which I absolutely adore. The beat sounds a bit like "The Glamourous Life" beat IMO. 9/10 7. Wonderful Ass: One of my favorite bootleg tracks, glad to have it in this quality now! 9/10 8. Velvet Kitty Cat: A bit of a throwaway unfinished sounding track, but nice to listen to anyway. 6.5/10 9. Katrina's Paper Dolls: Another throwaway track, but a bit less nice to listen to. 5/10 10. We Can Fuck: Wow, this is excellent!! So much more interesting than the overproduced version that was released with George Clinton on it. One of my favorite Prince songs ever by now already. 10/10 11. Father's Song: Nice addition to close out the disc, but it sounds like a demo to me. I don't think Prince would have ever let this be released in this way. 7/10
