siriusfunk said: Just listening to disc 2 for the 4th time on my headphones. Love it. So bittersweet to hear these songs. All of us have spent so much time waiting for new albums from Prince each year. Each year we also say to ourselves man I wish I could hear some high quality vault material. Makes me happy and sad at same time. Question. The rapping on Wonderful Ass. I've heard this song a billion times before and I always think I've heard someone else rapping a similar tune. I know INXS Mediate sounds similar but was there something done earlier? I am curious if INXS got this from Prince. Just curious. Its really bugging me for some reason. Help... Answered my own question. Nevermind my post. Someone pointed this out earlier. Bob Dylan is the answer.

In listening to these tracks, you can hear that some of them definitely came from a vinyl copy and were 'cleaned up' in an DAW / audio program. It's very faint to hear (as whomever did it, did a good job), but you can hear noise that comes directly from vinyl playback. It's not bad what WB did, but it was unfortunate that they couldn't source the master mixes. It somewhat makes me a little concerned moving forward as I wonder if this is going to be the norm for future Prince releases of unreleased material.

i hear " shes always in my hair" in "wonder ass". i hear "scarlet pussy" in" velvet kitty". then i hear "for the tears in your eyes" in" katrinas paperdolls". its interesting to hear free loose jams that eventually form new life in a different completed song

Yes, according to one of the Bio's I've read (DMSR or Possessed?) there was a popular INXS song at the time, Mediate, that used these phrases but on further investigation it seems that song was not released until 1987 which somewhat disproves that theory. According to Princevault it was originally from a 1965 Bob Dylan song, Subbterranean Homesick Blues. Perhaps this was one of the reasons it wasn't released along with the content of the lyrics

Apologies if it's already been discussed elsewhere. Velvet Kitty Cat seems obvious to me to be a demo for Vanity 6 (or Apollonia 6) as it is sung from a female point of view and has the characteristic double meaning. I think Katrina's Paper Dolls is probably the same (a demo for Vanity 6).
Agree that Dance Electric and Possessed go on for far too long. That said, I wouldn't trade them for anything.
Computer Blue (Hallway) - I still can't understand all of the "hallway" lyrics under all the other sounds.
I'm actually happy to finally have a Purple Rain edit. I don't need to hear the full version everytime.

First impression: although some songs I would have prefered in a different version (The Dance Electric, Wonderful Ass) this is still a fantastic collection of gems in my opinion!!! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

I get 'International Lover' feels in 'We Can Fuck', is it a sequel?

I'm posting these thoughts here as they mostly address CD2, and could not find a sticky thread for the release as a whole...
Oh man, where to start? I have such conflicted feelings about this release.

Couldn't disagree more.
Apart from When Doves Cry and (at a stretch) Purple Rain, I would take Wonderful Ass, Electric Intercourse and We Can Fuck over anything on Purple Rain.
Which isn't to say those tracks would have been a good fit for Purple Rain.

I love everything and its hard to really complain at all. The only complaint I might have is that I really wanted the version of We Can Funk that runs approx 5:30 with the incredible bass and the Miko weaver guitaar solo at the end. That's always been my favorite version and wished to hear it cleaaned up a bit and released officially. This version is more similar to the one that eventually was on GB.Did U ever feel that life was like lookin' 4 a penny in a large room with no light?

fen, I agree with you that the explicit content in WCF is the reason why it remained in the vault all of these years. The explicit content is the only reason that explains why it remained in the vault because in every way, the song is a masterpeice. My interpretation of the song is that it is 10 minutes of Prince either (a) having sex in the recording studio or (b) re-living a sexual encounter from start to finish in a song. It is musical pornography. . I have read parts of Alex Hahn and Laura Tiebert's book The Rise of Prince (book club here: http://prince.org/msg/7/441586), and it is clear from reading that book that Prince did experience some inner conflicts regarding the sexual nature of his music conflicting with his religious beliefs. I wonder if it was Prince who self-censored this song or if it was WB. The song is certainly very explicit by today's standards. . I wonder if he intended this song to be on 1999 or on PR. Stylistically, it fits with 1999 songs like Lady Cab Driver and International Lover. However, if the make-out scene between Apollonia and Prince in PR were extended to be a full-on sexual encounter, I could see WCF as being the song playing during that scene. I love it...And "Wonderful Ass" seriously needs to be a single. That's a top 10 hit IMO... The word Ass is no longer censored on radio, so it could work.
I've already made a new playlist as the "Roadhouse Garden" album. 1. Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden 2. Love and Sex 3. Electric Intercourse 4. Wonderful Ass 5. We Can Fuck 6. Splash 7. All My Dreams Running time is at around 44:30... [Edited 6/25/17 9:05am] Exiles of the Nation

Has anyone heard a version of Dance Electric that doesn't start mid phrase

After giving all the songs a chance to sink in, here's my verdict and my favorite's in order.
1- Wonderful A$$- "When Doves Cry" used to be my all time favorite song. After hearing WA a year ago for the first time , it's a tie, and it surpasses any other song in it's vicinity. I would have bought this album for the Price, just to have a clearer version of this song. 10/10 2- Electric Intercourse- I never thought a studio version would have been able to surpass the treasure that was the live version, but this studio version takes no prisoners. It kills it. It surpasses the live version, which shocked me to the core... 10/10 3- We can F%#k- !!!! 10/10 4-Love And sex- I absolutely love this song. It's playful and energetically fun. I just smile ear to ear hearing him scream sing. 10/10 5-Dance Electric- I never had Prince's version of this song, so I'm pretty much on cloud 9! Amazing! This would have been a hit back in the day.. 10/10 6-Katrina's Paper Dolls- Quirky little song that grows on you. At first you think you might not like it... Then bam! You love it! 9/10 7-Computer Blue Hall way speech - Crazy and wild adventure. Love It! 10/10 8-Possessed- This song is so cool. makes me excited to watch Purple Rain just to hear the intro. 9/10 9-Father's Song- Simply Beautiful 8/10 10-Our Destiny/Roadhouse Garden- While Prince's version of OD is my favorite, It's great having this one as well. They both are songs that you grow to like. RG 8/10 - OD 7.5/10 11-Velvet Kitty Kat- This song was never my favorite, but it's Unique and its Prince, sooo.. 7/10 [Edited 6/26/17 5:19am]

Neversin said: So sad... WBR and Prince had numerous archivers contact them over the years to start or help out with a "Purple Rain" Expanded set and provide them with material to let them know what was out there... Hearing this disc now is just sad and seems like a half-assed rush job for a payday... "Love And Sex" is awesome and new to me... "Computer Blue" is out there in better quality and without glitches... "Electric Intercourse" is awesome and a huge upgrade to the 2.5 minute warped tape sample that was out there... "Our Destiny/ Roadhouse Garden" now this is a real bad cut and paste job... The "Our Destiny" ending is longer and segues perfectly into "Roadhouse Garden", where this came from is just a big WTF moment for everyone I talked to the last days...
So all in all, as I've said before, WBR/NPG never listened to fans, collectors or archivers who were more than willing to help out FOR FREE and without the need of any credit whatsoever...
Neversin. Thanks for your input. I wish I could hear that better version of Katrina's Paper Doll...
