Yes, it's very haunting. What is your theory on what the lyrics might mean?

Prince must have dispensed of his silly JoHo beliefs and finally converted to Pastafarianism.

Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

I find that statement Pastaphobic. It characterizes us as one particular race.

You disgust me.

I was just talking with a friend of mine this afternoon about what I think he's singing about on this track. About a year back I attempted to parse out meaning. See below.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's dinnertime. Prince is sitting in the kitchen with a simmering pot of pasta he has placed on the stove. While waiting for the food to cook, he is on the phone with a woman. Both search for the right words to start a conversation.

In the privacy of his mind, he asks her, in wonder and awe, how she came to be here. On Earth. In his life. The kind of existential questions that come to mind about those we love deeply, but are too afraid to come out and ask, for fear our words will reveal the intensity of our feelings.

The phone call starts with him inquiring into what she ordered when she went to lunch that day at some eatery. He echoes her surprise--"how would I know"--as if prompting her (or maybe himself) to search out and find the answer: that he is infatuated. Even the smallest, most insignificant details of her day are of interest to him.

Internally, he reflects on the one-sided nature of their relationship: she is emotionally unattached; he is starving for her affection. A shared past of physical and emotional intimacy plays out in his mind. On the phone, he makes small talk by sharing with her his affinity for the music of the sixties.

Some indefinable stretch of time has passed in waiting. Distractedly, he registers that it's some celeb's birthday. Mostly he notes the date for its full moon. It's nighttime.

His awareness shifts to the present as the smell of burning pasta snaps him back to reality: "It's June." The celeb is him, and June 7th is nearly come and gone. An afterthought. He spent the day alone, waiting for his lover to call, but the call never comes through. The entire conversation took place in his mind. This woman is not going to show up, nor will she ever be a serious part of his life, because she couldn't even be bothered to be with him on his birthday. And because she is married. But he waited all day for her anyways because he is hopelessly in love and can't face that she does not feel the same for him.

The arrival of June is heralded, not by celebration, but by the loneliness of unrequited love.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Damn, its gonna make me cry looking so deeply into this song....

My interpretation may not be correct of course, so I'd like to read other fans' insights into the song. "June" is but one of many very worthwhile examples of Prince's formidable songwriting and storytelling skills. Haunting indeed.

JUNE

Pasta simmers on the stove in June
Makes no sense yet, but it will soon
Conversation starters come way too hard
Nobody wants to be the martyr,
playin' the wrong cards
Why did you come to this planet?
Why did you come to this life?
How can you be everybody's dream,
and still be somebody's wife?
Tell me, what did you have for lunch today?
That's right, how would I know?
How would I know?
You are off somewhere, being free
while I starve in the lonesome cold.
Our bodies got used to each other
Now they're used to the sound
of Richie Havens' voice on the vinyl,
spinning round and round, round and round
Sometimes I feel I was born way too late
Shoulda been born on the Woodstock stage
But I'm just here, waitin', and waitin', and waitin'
Somebody famous had a birthday today
All I saw was another full moon
What's that?
Something's burning on the stove
Must be the pasta
Must be the pasta
Oh yeah, it's June

I couldn't stop listening to this song after he passed and it has haunted me ever since. I think among the many things that make me ache inside when I listen to it is the bass; how the sound penetrates through me. Interestingly enough, when I researched that particular style of bass sound, it led me to discover Jaco Pastorius, who was the bass player for Prince's favorite singer , Joni Mitchell. (Of course it's Prince playing bass for this song.)

And of one the books that he left in his office is "THE QUICKENING" which deals with this in detail.

ALSO, I was listening to an episode of The Prince Podcast this week, which occured right after PP opened last fall. The gentleman being questioned pointed out that the little kitchen/lounge by the atrium (which was left as-is) had a calendar in it, and it was turned to JUNE.

I did NOT notice that myself when I went to PP in April. eek
