Appreciation Thread: “Scandalous!”

Tugging on women’s heartstrings as well as their bra straps was Prince’s style, and “Scandalous!” encapsulates that vibe perfectly. He proves his weight in vocal gold on this scorching bedroom ballad as his falsetto drips like slow ribbons of honey. Legend has it that honey was scraped off the mixing desk after recording the beautifully lush, 18-minute EP with Hollywood actress Kim Basinger (who portrayed Vicki Vale in Batman). “Scandalous!” bolted to #5 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1989, and continues to age gracefully with each passing decade.

Great song. I loved it when he would place it in a sequence in concert with two other of his best love/lust ballads. For Welcome to America, he did it with Insatiable and Adore and worked the crowd in a lather. On another tour, he paired it with Insatiable and Damn U. In both cases, Scandalous was a vital cog of the fantastic trio.

The best thing about any of this is the guitar solo in "The Passion".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Ever notice how the new version of Extraloveable makes a subtle reference to The Scandalous Sex Suite?
At the end it uses the exact synth sound and same 4 notes from Sex repeated as the sound of water draining from a tub fades. Prince even as-libs "Scandalous!" before that so you know it's intentional.

Hello!

I love the 12-inch. It's one of my favorite Prince records, and I feel like it really caps his 80s work.

When he passed this was one of the songs that I got stuck on. He was really having a moment in the studio with this, and it was just flowing through him like a river. A big, endless, divine river...

Loved the 1989 Batman movie, largely in part to Tim Burton, Michael Keaton and definitely P's soundtrack.

The Scandalous Sex Suite in it's longest version is something I usually put on and allow to loop...It's been a deliciously wicked personal favourite of mine for 25+ years...

wink cool
