When will Prince videos will be restored in 4k and be available on Blu Ray like the Beatles music videos?

Why the fuck would anyone on here know? I mean, have you even assessed the situation around his estate at the moment?

Impolite but exact to the point

The process of making music videos would make this technically impossible.

.

However it is possible to make a decent DVD compilation as long as the masters have been looked after.

.

When WB re-issued 1999 at the millennium the broadcast master was a new digital transfer from the original master - therefore the new broadcast master was at least a second generation copy from the first generation analogue master.

.

It could only be done for the ones shot on film that they still hold the negative to.

But The Beatles stuff is the gold standard on how to do it! The packaging for the new box set of Sgt Peppers has such great ideas... if only the same kind of thing could happen for a boxed set of SOTT, or a Lovesexy/BlackAlbum dual album set.

True! But even then - a lot of the music videos that were shot in the 80's and 90's on filme, were then edited to a video (VHS/ Beta) master. This is exactly the problem with a lot of Michael Jackson's short films.

Even if they have the negatives, not only would there most likely have to be a frame-by frame restoration, but the whole thing would most likely have to be re-edited.

All this is why I would be satisfied with cleaned up DVD releases. Even in these days of HD this is the best way to go with such releases.

:yeahthat:

I think its a good question btw. All the estate shenanigans aside, his fans (and the music-loving population in general) just want access to, or the ability to, buy and witness his amazing work. Nothing wrong with that wink

I know video taped films are hard and impossible to convert to HD or 4K

If Beatles' tv appearances filmed in video tape including the most famous one in Ed Sullivan managed to look great in Blu Ray!

Why not same thing for Prince videos that were filmed in video tape including 1999, Alphabet St, etc?

This isn't as straight forward as some people think.

.

TV performances are easy to clean up as they were shot live and mixed live, straight onto film. This would have been 16mm which is a 4:3 ratio.

.

As film is optical it would be expandable to 4k and beyond, yet you would then see many limitations in the film stock / grain, so the pixel height and width would be limited.

.

A music video from the 80s and 90s has a completely different production process.

.

80s were shot on film but edited on analogue linear umatic tape. 90s were mainly shot on film but telecined to digibeta but edited digitally non-linear.

.

The negative (or positive in many cases) would have to go through the telecine process again. Old settings are never saved so this would be a new grade and therefore would not match the original.

.

The EDL (edit decision list) would not exist and even if it did, it would be near impossible to recompile everything again.

.

Also, take for example I Wish U Heaven, a great example of multi composit layering.

.

During this time this would have been analogue linear. It would be near impossible to recomposit all of the element, but even if it was, all of the assets would be restricted to the quality of the day.

.

As I mentioned earlier, the best method would be to go back to the actual original master and create a new dub, which can be cleaned up, and will give the best result - within the realms of possibility.

.

This is what happened with 1999.

.

lol

.

Because The Beatles have a loooong history of selling lotsa records/DVDs etc. Prince hasn't.

Man, I don't know if I can wait that long. I'm hoping for the 2018 release. It was November 31, but they bumped it up to a spring release.
