Like, why don't you just listen to them then? Because like only your opinion on them is what should matter to, like, you.

Not really. I only seem to remember 2 great songs from the albums."the dance" and "when eye lay my hands on u".
I couldn't ever understand the love for "high" or "underneath the cream"

Your mileage may vary depending on your taste but I liked them. I mashed them together into one record and got a pretty fine record out of it.

There are some good tracks on Chocolate Invasion, but to my ears The Slaughterhouse was a bit of a dumping ground for some of his weakest tracks. Of the 40 solo albums, I rank it only above Prince's 2009/2010 nadir of Lotus and 20Ten.

Though TCI isn't in its original form there. But it's a nice alternate configuration.

TCI is definitely one of his most under-rated CDs. Pure undiluted funk!

Correct. I guess the old LP designation should be used more often, especially here.

very bass heavy tracks, Peace played loud is always killer. Larry's bass on that, and Mr Hayes, its a great song. Underneath The Cream, Supercute, Judas Kiss. Some really great stuff on those albums,

I think because of the way they were released 3 years after they should have been they were sadly a bit overlooked and the release format of 2 compilation albums made the tracks appear like filler, or throwaway material. If they'd come out as the albums they were intended to be, High and the NPG's Peace, they would be highly regarded.

The Chocolate Invasion, yes. The Slaughterhouse, not so much.

I only like one song ("Peace") between the two albums tbh. I like the albums for what-if compliations of the aborted High project though.

These albums show a funky side of Prince heard before but more stripped back. His process with these albums have the kind of feel,as less is more. Less instruments,no big band stuff, but still funky enough to make u wanna dance. Every 10 years Prince changed up his style and his sound. He always kept up with new technology music equipment and always kept his sound fresh. Good albums check them out.

I hadn't listened to these for the best part of ten years, but this thread and the fact that I am in the middle of a purple high at the moment made me put The Chocolate Invasion on. It sounds an awful lot better than I remembered! Now, I'm not sure I have enough courage to try Slaughterhouse, though...

Here's the album I spliced together that I named "The Chocolate Slaughterhouse". I've shared it with friends and casual fans and they seem to dig it:

  1. "Silicon" – 4:17
  2. "S&M Groove" – 5:10
  3. "Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This?" – 4:33
  1. "Northside" – 6:34
  2. "Peace" – 5:35
  3. "2045: Radical Man" – 6:34
  4. "The Daisy Chain"
  1. "When Eye Lay My Hands on U" – 3:45
  2. "Judas Smile" – 6:37
  3. "Supercute" – 4:17
  1. "Sexmesexmenot" – 5:46
  2. "Vavoom" – 4:40
  3. "High" – 5:09

Sorry about the formatting. Tracks aren't in this order and C&P from Wikipedia puts the numbers on them automatically. I LOVE "Judas Smile", Sexmesexmenot" and "S&M Groove" and "Supecute" especially. "Judas Smile" is just a mad scientist, Frankenstein mind fuck of a song, especially with headphones. Same with "Silicon" which is sort of underrated. I like what he was tryng here, which seems to me like the logical extension of what he did with the "1999" album; all by himself with layering, overdubs and the drum machine except there's more layers to this material, for better or for worse depending on your taste. "Sexmesexmenot" is just slinky and thick.

Only real thing I miss from these records is the lack of really exemplary guitar work but Prince seemed ot always bury the axe towards the back of the mix for some reason. Amongst the more "synthetic" sort of stuff he did (Rave, 20Ten, MPLSound, NPS, Emancipation, Batman) I think it's fine. It's not the greatest songwriting he's done either for sure but these records are no worse than MPLSound (which I like) and NPS (which I don't hate and find underrated).

I think it comes down to what Prince "style" you enjoy which seems to variate wildly amongst his fans. Smoke a bowl and absorb these with headphones is my advice.
