Princely Positivity

Scrolling thru threds on here and eye see a lot of negativity about Prince and others, written by those who call themselves fans and lovers of Prince. His Purpleness would not have it this way, so this thread is about Positivity. Write something about Prince that makes you happy, tell us what first sparked your interest in the Purple one. Drop your favorite photo, tell us your favorite song or your favorite instrument that Prince plays. Lets make this thread about Positivity.

Eye will start by saying eye was 12 years old when eye was first introduced to Princes artistry, eye was in the video store with my dad. Eye approached him with "Purple Rain" in one hand and "Hair" in the other. He told me eye could rent one movie, well guess which one it was...13 years later and i still haven't see Hair.

I like this one!

Picture it: 1989, and everything.... falloff

Ahem. Seriously, my mom had bought the Batman movie that year on vhs tape, and we watched it on family movie night. I LOVED that movie, and the soundtrack, so I bugged my mom to get me the tape, which she did without batting an eye. I was all of 13, so /technically/ she shouldn't have according to Tammy Faye Baker, but, well, mom wasn't too fussed about it. biggrin Of course, I knew who Prince was, and had heard various songs of his on the radio, but that was my first album of his that I remember owning, and I wore it right out. I believe there was this mashup of Batdance, Terence Trent D'arby's Sign Your Name, and something else, just snippets on a loop. My brother and I drove my mom crazy with that. lol

I'd watch the videos on some random video channel that showed up sometimes, and especially loved the Batdance and Partyman videos. I'd try -- and FAIL HILARIOUSLY -- to do the steps and whatnot. Those videos were my absolute favorite, because who the hell doesn't love all that awesome costuming and stuff that was going on there. And oh, I wanted to learn to play the guitar like he did in Batdance. Never did, though, cause I couldn't afford an electric guitar. But still, dude was like Jimi Hendrix for me.

Fun times, tho, real fun times.

I imagine myself inside your bedroom; oh, I imagine myself in your sky.

On the subject of videos, the Computer Blue scene in Purple Rain is by far my most played. I would watch it and listen to the song in my bedroom and do the dance moves and air guitar along with it. And him, Brown Mark, and Wendy are all so hot in it. To this day it's still my favorite song! guitar

Ahhh very nice. That part in the movie sets such a specific tone, the music and the dance, Morris and Appalonia in the audience, Prince blindfolded, glistening with sweat and very toned looking. Definitely a highlight of the movie, not to mention the follow up with darling nikki which is a very sexy performance to say the least.

Im just going to take the words from my Profile and drop them here...

WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY ABOUT PRINCE ?

He boggles my mind every time.

Sheer genius in such a beautiful package.

You can read the lyrics in their glorious poetry,

and you can listen to just the music and be completely swept away.

They don't even need each other.

Put them together and you have an absolute volcano of gorgeousness.

In addition to the amazing voice that has no bounds high or low,

the astounding things he can do with a guitar or piano or countless other instruments,

the expression he puts into his performance,

and the ability to flawlessly conduct his band as he performs.

A combination clearly made in heaven

I remember first getting into Prince a year ago. When he had died, my parents, who were casual fans, got out all of his old albums and bought some hits collections and started playing them in the car. On the day after he died, I got in the car to go to school and The Very Best of Prince started playing. My dad was bopping along to the songs while I just ignored them and went on my phone thinking meh. Old music. Boy was I wrong. Track 4 came on. I instantly put my phone down and actually started listening to this amazing intro solo which kicked off one of my favourite songs to this day: When Doves Cry. The rest, as they say, is history.

Me too! Hearing that in (hopefully) great quality is what I'm most excited about with PR Deluxe.

My first memory of Prince is hearing my mom singing along to "Kiss". When the smooching noise part came she'd kiss my cheeks in unison with the song. I remember thinking it was a woman singing and my mother correcting me. I was very young. Shout out to Prince and my mom for ridding me of gender barriers for my whole life!

Bless...I just checked your profile...

Knowing that you are 16 and are getting into the Purple Train makes me SO HaPPY..

THe deeper you delve into his catalogue the deeper you will want to go,

and eventually you will find that most other music that you hear from now on will not satisfy you the way the Prince Music does..

I really do believe it changes us right donw to our DNA

and in a really GOOD way...

Have you gotten into Violet the Organ Grinder and Gett Off yet ?

Yes, I've love Gett Off and I plan on getting the single with all of the remixes (including VTOG) soon. And you are definitely right about wanting to go deeper into his catalogue. I've managed to get all of his officially released albums, but I don't know where to get some of the really rare unreleased stuff that I've seen talked about on the org, like in the recent thread on the rarest unreleased track, but hopefully it'll all be released soon.

I remember feeling the exact same way with If I Was Your Girlfriend. I first heard it with my dad in the car and I couldn't believe it was Prince. The man was so talented with such a great range.

It was January 26, 1980 and Prince appeared on American Bandstand, and that was it for me! I was totally and hopelessly in LOVE with him!! I was a young teenager. I heard his music prior to that, but really didn't know who he was, so seeing him on AB helped me make the connection. I just fell in love with his music and his style. He was so different and unique and not afraid to show the world who he was. He was a natural talent and the amount of energy and sex-appeal he had; the way he moved and danced across the stage--was like something from another planet; something I had never seen before--oh, and the music!! lol lol prince music heart

Dude the best about Prince is that even if you´re a long time fan you will still be discovering or re-discovering stuff. Songs you somehow left behind / didn´t remember you had / didn´t say anything to you at first and later... bam! Last year I re-discovered Witness 4 the Prosecution and this year Hallucination Rain (on NPG´s Exodus). Enjoy the ride!

Sexuality as a teenager is a mf'r no matter what your preferences.
I am straight woman, but I remember being 15-16-17 and all my girlfriends 'fantasies' were about I Love You's, flowers, happily forever after, canopy beds, etc. mine were uh..... a bit more carnal. I realized pretty quick, keep your mouth shut in these convos bcs you'll be seen as deviant. Women's sexuality is not supposed to be powerful.
My parents were super progressive, so I wasn't getting the delicate flower thing at home, but at that age, your social group defines things (at least in the present) much more than your parents.

Anyway, when Prince got bigger and bigger, I relaized there is no way I'm the only one who sees sexuality w/ more fluidity in the power. Here is this incredibly popular dude, in women's underwear and falsetto, without compromising a skosh of his masculinity. In fact, it was all the more strong because of his fluidity.

I was born a fist pumping feminist because I was raised by one who was also raised by one. I knew to be aware of, watch out for and learn to navigate around misogyny because I had been taught to. But one of my first self-realized feminist truths came through Prince.

Laydown

1991. Gett Off was the beginning of my obsession with Paisley Park. The guitar solo in the middle of the funk driven melody and harmonies was such a contrast,in a great way,I was blown away.

April 2015. "singer Prince hospitalized after serious case of flu". Hmm..I like When Doves Cry. I like those songs on the radio that I hear. I remember wanting to see Purple Rain as a kid, let's look up more about him! Holy shit..an album a year AND he plays all those instruments..AND he has all that unreleased material?? Damn can't wait to see him in concert...fast forward 6 days...well shit.

I remember driving home from school that day listening to a Prince tribute on the radio thinking, listening to the songs thinking, "He wrote the Glamorous Life?". "That Sex Shooter song my mom sang when I was a kid was real??". "He wrote Jungle Love??". "I Feel For You?!?". Then came the YouTube videos, I remember the Lovesexy tour blew me away (especially the piano medley), and the Purple Rain tour seemed as good as any major tour today. I remember buying the 1999 and Purple Rain albums after the BET tribute, which showed me how much he meant to black culture. I remember exercising to "Let's Pretend We're Married" and thinking, "Did he really just say let me fuck the taste out of your mouth??"

About a year later, and my love is still the same, still discovering new things.
