I'd feel more inclined to join guide tracks for side projects with the side projects' rereleases themselves than with their contemporary Prince albums. . From a purely artistic perspective, Controversy is a totally unrelated statement to The Time, both musically and lyrically. Prince's vision has to be respected and his reissues need to be curated in a more cohesive manner than by randomly mixing tracks from different projects or eras (PR Deluxe is already a bit of a mess in that regard). Of course, it's sometimes hard to draw a line, with songs being recorded all the time and sometimes considered for several projects, but in that case there's little room for doubt: those recording were intended for, and belong on The Time, not Controversy. . From a commercial perspective, adding tracks with Prince on vocals on side projects rerelease would bring considerable media attention, and consumer appeal, to those releases. On the other hand, adding side projects songs on Prince rereleases that already contain a whole CD of other Prince outtakes wouldn't probably be more attractive for any journalist, or consumer save the hardcore fans who, anyway, would be interested in the project regardless of its content.
