The Line-Appreciation Thread I just rediscovered this song.its very powerful. IDK how it would've fit in on the lovesexy album.i dare to say that maybe "The Line" was too good for the lovesexy album.
What is everyone here's favorite version? Version 1 has a dark feel to it but version 2 is not so dark and has LOTS of energy.i believe version 2 circulated 2 or 3 years ago. [Edited 6/4/17 22:46pm]

This track is dope AF. Used to be OBSESSED with it, played it on repeat. I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said.

I usually prefer the the stripped down versions recorded more or less solo by Prince but in this case I prefer the second more busy version. I think it would have fitted nicely on Lovesexy, perhaps in place of Dance On. [Edited 6/5/17 5:10am] The wooh is on the one!

Definitely one of my favourite outtakes - both versions are cool.

Love, love LOVE the version with Boni singing Precious Lord at the end. This coming from an Agnostic says a lot. Boni rivaled Rosie for one of the best singers in one of his bands.

Does crossing the line represent a leap of faith (accepting religion) or crossing over to "the other side" ie death? The wooh is on the one!

the busier version would have worked on Lovesexy if anything it should have been released as a Bside to Lovesexy

Yes, he is doing that and that man did it because he wanted to have someone in his life but be a hoe bag at the same time.

Not sure I've ever listened fully to the first version that leaked as I've always assumed that it was incomplete and the second one was more "complete", am I wrong about this? Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

Regardless of which one one prefers, what I found totally impressive when I finally got to hear the second version was how those 2 recordings tell 2 completely different stories. The lyrics are the same, even the basic tracks are the same, yet by piling up additional elements, Prince has managed to make 2 songs that tell 2 stories so different that are are nearly contradictory, the first one being a dark, intimate doubt song, and the second one a joyful, celebratory gospel. Those 2 recordings are almost a case study of how layered, complex and ambiguous Prince's work is. In the end my feeling is that in both thematics and sound texture, version 2 would have been perfect for Lovesexy, while version 1 would have fit well on Graffiti Bridge. Both are good. Slight preference for the one with Boni. Boni was cool. 'Liberate My Mind'

Love this jam, so upbeat and positive and these lines . (New dance) {repeat in BG} . The fact his voice is really frenzied when he is talking about instant kitchen products. Then Boni's voice in the "Take my hand precious lord" The backbeats and harmonies and some of Prince's screams are incredible. . This jam is a party in yo ears! . I have 2 versions
One is off the Work 2.0/Testament boot and is 7.32 long it sounds more sparse and bass infused and has Boni Boyer all over it. In the 1987 folder . The second is off Perfect Unreleased Prince, is longer at 8.54 and sounds more polished, again it is the whole band. It sounds a bit later than the above one. This has more organs and Timbales running through and also background noise of clapping and all the pimp talking you hear in between Eye Know and Alphabet Street and Joy in Repetition.
[Edited 6/6/17 3:01am] Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Exactly, he would have been setting himself for heartbreak either way which I think was what Prince wanted.
