Largest Crowd For A Prince Concert?

What was the largest crowd Prince performed at for a PRINCE concert... Not including music festivals and opening for the Stones or the Rock in Rio festival which was over 100,000 people...

Was it in 1985 the superdome 90,000 people during the Purple Rain tour?

Wembley Stadium in '93 was the largest crowd I witnessed him perform to. Around 80,000 I think. Was also my first Prince concert.

I thought Rock In Rio, too. Those crowds are just massive. I doubt Coachella or North Sea would be up to those numbers, but I do think a festival might be in the running, opposed to any stadium.

God, the energy that a performer, whether a keyboard player or the guy out front, must feel when standing in front of 50,000 people all clapping and yelling your name. It'd knock me over.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The superdome concert which I attended was a sellout at 60,000. Interestingly, the infamous gigs with the Rolling Stones at The Coliseum supposedly were sellouts, which probably means that there were 90,000, so that is the biggest that I know of.

North Sea Jazz was in the Ahoy hall in Rotterdam, which holds around 10,000 people.

AHH ok. Makes sense. But on video sometimes it just seems huge.

To the OP, if you really wanted to know, you might have to dig. I'm not sure what sort of information holds for concerts, but Wikipedia might be a help. It often holds venue sales, and gross revenue.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

My first Prince show too. I was 13. What a day... it was about 80k. Wembley then had a 75k capacity for sport, add the crowd on the pitch made it about 80k.

Thought so too. A quick google learns that almost 79,000 attendants were there, as the capacity of the MaracaƱa stadium.

For some reason I remember being told it was 103,000, but maybe someone just exagerated, or maybe I've add 1000 to the attendance each year I tell the story. In any case, I will say that to this day I get chills thinking about that concert. Standing behind the big black curtain, waiting for the show to start, then the four "clank" count-off to "My Name is Prince". The curtain drops on the downbeat, and I see this massive crowd, which immediately erupts. The opening had the band playing a basic Bb walkup in unison. It was probably the simplist thing I had to play all night, and I went completely blank. I just stood there like a deer caught in the headlights as the open riff went by. I regrouped quickly and it was back to funk business as usual, but that's one of the shows I will never forget.

Wembley Stadium capacity in 1993 (and from 1984 until 2002) was 72,000. It was reduced from 80,000 for safety reasons.

Still 2,000 more than Syarcuse. There might have been a bigger stadium on the Purple Rain Tour, but I don't know US stadium capacity. Anyone?

Not so good memories for me. I paid an absolute fortune for VIP and got put in a corporate box with a load of stuffy executives who hardly knew who Prince was. The box seemed like a million miles away from the stage. God knows what the suits must have thought of me jumping and dancing around, singing at the top of my voice. Wish I'd just had standing tickets.

But is the Super Bowl a festival? I'd call it a televised football game at a Prince concert wink

Attendance/Capacity

I think the number will be at the bottom of each page. I'm not going to do it so you'll have to click all of those to find the biggest. smile

Thanks... But I already checked... Most don't have the actual capacity for that concert, just a generalized capacity for the venue, which a lot don't even exist anymore.

Not sure but I'd guess that the largest would be either a music festival, opening for the Stones or the Rock in Rio festival.

RIP sad
