Beautiful Strange

I love this song (and the album) but I can not figure out what it's about. I have thought it was about God, sex, aliens, the music muse, his baby, etc. Nothing seems right and maybe that's the point.

Any thoughts?

ITs God, I believe. But maybe God can manifest itself/himself in his baby, sex, his music, etc.

The album is finished but unreleased. There's further details on Prince Vault, I think.

Yet another project I'd love to see released, perhaps more than some of the 80s material.

Not sure either though I imagine God is Alive in the song. Great version of the song during the New Morning after show in Paris, 2011.

Interesting--didn't know there was an album. According to Princevault, the only other known song was a cover of Twisted, written "as an instrumental by Wardell Gray in 1949, before having lyrics added by Scottish jazz singer Annie Ross in 1952." Apparently, P ditched the album to work on Roadhouse Garden and Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic.

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I misspoke. I meant rave into the joy fantastic which the song is on. I know it's not his greatest album but there are several songs I love. Each to his or her own.

Strangely beautiful
Beautiful strange
That's what we said
instead of the name
If U count the times
He took all the blame
U would find the reason
behind the game

In the darkness
we must look 4 the way
Words so strange
that only the mind can say
If it makes no mind
what color or holy day
why is this game
the only one that we play

Dive inside your soul if U wanna know
the light inside the darkness 4ever glows
The son is like the diamond inside the coal

It's about inner enlightenment, about experiencing the Divine. It's about God. "If you count the times He took all the blame" - every time something goes wrong in our life (for those that are religous) God usually gets the blame. In eastern teachings they say that life is a cosmic play, it's a game we play to trick ourselves into believing we are separate from God and each other. "In the darkness we must look 4 the way," - closing your eyes to meditate, but it could also be that we live in darkness when we focus upon the mundane. "Words so strange that only the mind can say" - In meditation, there is no language. It is an experience and once you try to define that experience with language, you lose the experience. "Dive inside your soul if U wanna know, the light inside the darkness 4ever glows, the son is like the diamond inside the coal" - again, meditate, dive within yourself, the light is always there. The Son is Christ Consciousness, within the coal, you.

I've always loved this song. It's incredibly deep and the feeling it evokes is unlike anything else.

I have seen the references to the unreleased album on PV, but to be honest I'm doubtful of its real existence, simply also as projected.

Indeed this song passes a sex vibe (at least for me, really does). If the content is really about divinity and god, this tune get me totally distracted from it...

Prince also carried a lyric book titled Beautiful Strange on the ONA tour. I think about three seperate albums were culled for Rave, so possibly some material from it, other than the title track, ended up on that album.

Prince also mentioned in an interview in '98 that he had a 'crazy rock album' ready to release. All these potential projects intrigue me. Whatever, Beautiful Strange certainly deserved to be a title cut for something bigger.

Ive listened to this song about 20 times in the last 2 day and I have come to believe that it's about his baby and that he tried to play his way through his grief over this loss.

Perhaps that's because I lost a sick baby myself and have taken care of other's babys for many years as a nurse.

I think thats part of his power - that you can believe that he is/was speaking to you.

I wish he was still here to explain it to me. sad
