Thanks for this! I loved the part where Miles Davis hands off the baton to Prince saying "He could be the next Duke Ellington", coming from Miles...Wow!

That's good, except there's one error:

RodeoSchro said: That's good, except there's one error: Not true. Prince was called on by James Brown, and he was brought up by Big Chick at the request of MJ. Upon Prince's departure from the stage, he took down a "street lamp" stage prop. This has been discussed here on the org before and there is a video of it that you can look up

Jill Jones said that both drank a whole bottle of wine on the way to the show. She said they were falling down drunk.

No, the video is real. Jill Jones recenlty talked about it. I will see if I can find the interview. Prince was drunk and should have never gone up on that stage. Think about his entrorage let him go up on the stage and embarrass himself tells you something about the people he was rolling with.

Love this article, thanks for posting. Here's the thing though, the man came from a jazz foundation, his dad had a jazz trio and somewhat modeled his style after Thelonious Monk. Why do they always insist that his knowledge of Jazz was limited?

Because certain people always want to school black people on something. As if his dad played jazz and Prince would not have ever heard a jazz recording when he was growing up
It does not make any sense but it makes some people feel like they are superior. It is really sad.

Good read. Thanks. Btw I was standing behind the lamp post Prince knocked over. That's why I now walk with a cane. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Skimming through the article, I'm liking what I see! I'll have to read it thoroughly when I get the chance. There's one minor error I've noticed though: When speaking on Chaka, the author notes that her cover of "I Feel for You" hit #3 on the charts in 1979 when her version of the song was released in 1984.

It just strikes me as condescending, there's always this implication that prior to Lisa, Wendy & Eric, he didn't know Jazz music which is unrealistic considering his upbringings. I love Lisa & Wendy myself, and I'm fully aware that musicians (people in general) teach each other & expose each other to new ideas. But these articles always insist on implying that his taste in music - namely Jazz - supposedly became more sophisticated due to Wendy & Lisa. It doesn't make sense especially since he was the son of a JAZZ MUSICIAN Great article nonetheless.

His first influence was jazz, but he stayed away from playing until 85 or 86 and then his sound became alot larger and greater impact. He knew more about jazz than anyone of his peers,he certainly used it.Madhouse is synthesized jazz, entirely
