Prince will always be more an artist of artist than a people's artist

He gets a lot more respect from artists who know what it takes to create music than the regular people who chose the music that become soundtrack of their lives.

Disagree. Prince was able to (most of the time) balance his craft with being commercial and accessible to the masses (without selling out).
-
Examples/evidence: over $100 million albums sold, being one of the most famous people to have ever lived, the 1st to have simultaneous #1 album, movie, pop single in the USA. Also, his Super Bowl performance is considered the greatest ever....a performance strictly for the people...a people's artist.
-
Did he have a cult following? Yes. Did he pander to the masses? Sometimes. Mostly he straddled the line between popular star and artist like no one else.
-
Lastly, as his estate is straightened out more I think you will see a more traditional approach in the marketing of his art/legacy/music. Already seeing signs of it: Prince's tees in traditional dept stores, etc.

More and more he will become the hip person's artist. Not the mainstream Kim Kardashian publicly knowable persona, but the artists that cool people know.

Never the ephemeral persona of the day featured on Extra with Mario Lopez gushing over.

He's consitantly named as an influence by artists but you ask the general public who Prince is they don't really know. and I don't think it will get better with time as people of his time and generation are getting older. The Youtube, Spotify and younger generation won't really be checking for him.

I think part of Prince's problem was that Prince wanted to be regarded as some sort of musical teacher with integrity about real music by real musicians. But most people don't care about who plays what and how songs are recorded. Artists care and they respect his craft more as a result but most people don't.. He created more music to get respected for his musical chops instead of creating songs that the people can connect with.

.

Hmmm, I dunno. I think he gets a lot of respect from both sides. What I love and always admired about Prince is he always stayed true to himself and his music. He cared about the quality of his music. There are other artists who admire him, but I think there is a lot of jealousy in the music industry. Not may people have the level of talent that Prince had, and never will. Somone like Prince only comes around once in a lifetime.

.

I think Prince worked incredibly hard at trying to influence the younger generation with making good music and owning the rights to their music. He loved teaching music and inspiring other artists. I respect him for being very vocal about that. With that said, he has made a lasting impression on a lot of younger aritists, and certainly just regular folk like me! lol

.

He really was the greatest. prince

I agree! nod

.

Prince was one of those unique artists who appealed to the masses as well as his cult-followers.

.

I look forward to the day when the estate has everything squared-away.

Oh, no!! Don't say "Kardashian" in the same sentence as Prince, LMAO!! (joking) lol

.

Purple Rain helped put Prince on the map and put him more in the mainstream, but I think he was always unique. While he was indeed a big part of pop-culture, I never saw his music as bubble-gum music/generic crap. Prince was in a class all by himself.

Good argument. I agree with you in some aspects.

There's a review Ill post later that I transcribed fomr 1984 PR tour opener where it was rpeorted that Prince started screaming at the audience during the song PR because they were kind of stoic and was unappreciative of what he was doing up there.

Yeah, it seemed like he was not only playing to dazzle the audience because he knew he could do that easily but also as you stated, for other musicians and artists. He has stated in past interivews "do you know how easy it is for me to play anything sound that comes to my head?" or something akin to that. I think that statment(s) was for the whore.I mean for the artists he wanted to impress.

When Prince died, the entire world lit up purple in tribute. Even though I'm part of the 'older' generation, my kids grew up listening to Prince, and I'll make sure my grandkids do too...that is if my kids would ever get on the ball and give me some grandkids. lol

Awe...that's cute and a great idea...now to get my kids on the ball. LOL

My kids knew how much of a Prince fan I was. After MJ died, I told them, if you think this is bad, if something happens to Prince, you might as well lock me away. LOL when the news broke, each of my kids called me. cry Every holiday where there are presents involved, they always give me something related to Prince. This mothers day one of them gave me the symbol sticker for my car. I planted my flowers this last weekend and they are all purple. I wanted to do an all purple Christmas tree theme this past Christmas, but they drew line with tree...
