The beautifully lush “I Wish U Heaven” is another underrated gem in Prince’s overflowing chest of musical treasures. His angelic falsetto is in particularly fine form as he navigates the cascading synths, glistening strings, and chugging guitar riffs that give the song its divine glow. The lyrics describe how faith in God’s sovereign plan overrules life’s temporary roadblocks (see Romans 15:13). Clocking in at only 2:44 (or 10:17 if your soul can handle the 12-inch’s euphoric Blue Angel solo and “Take This Beat” freestyle), “I Wish U Heaven” straddles the lines between gospel, pop, and rock, sounding as fresh and alive as it did back in 1988.

I remember being somewhat underwhelmed by it when the album was released in May. I started to change my mind when I saw it performed several times during the tour in July and August. I was then totally blown away by the extended version in October. By the end of the year, I was in love with the album version. Those were the days when I was able to invest large amounts of time in single songs.

The original UK 12" had pressing problems. I was working in a record shop at the time and was gutted to discover every one of our copies jumped. I nipped down to one of our nearby rivals in my lunch break only to find all of theirs were the same. I had to wait several intensely annoying days waiting for new stock to arrive. At least I had the 7" poster sleeve with the iconic Dortmund picture to placate me in the meantime.

The regular song is good, but the extended "suite" version is amazing, "say hello to my little friend, the Blue Angel...."

This is my favourite Prince song.

Like everyone I also adore the 12" version, but the album version of the 'proper' portion of the song (Part 1) has a much better mix than the 12".

Love the album version, the thing i love the most about the song is the sentiment of pure and unconditional love regardless of any disagreements they might have.

One of his best songs ever. I love the glitchy sound towards the end and I love that innocent guitar sound that calls right back to the Dirty Mind era.

It's just a case of "too many hits" isn't it? I Wish U Heaven wasn't really a hit or or the first single from an album, it just gets left behind. It's a beautiful track though, deserves wider exposure.

There were certain Bsides that were not including in the 1990s Hits/Bsides set as well
