Love and Sex. Anyone want to whet our appetites

Love and Sex is a really long awaited outtake.

Anyone on here ever heard it. I know a few people are meant to have it, care to whet our appetites.

Per Nilsen said it begins with a scream like Enorphinmachine. Has a fast beat and some sexual lyrics. Prince had Susan Rodgers buy a Yamaha DX 11 for the track.

The one from 1986 is the one I really want to hear. Per Nilsen really described that one as a fantastic track.

The reworked 1986 one (but with P's vocals intact, rather than Sheila's) appears to be the one Questlove has been using in his party mixes, and there stands a reasonable chance that this is the one that will end up on PR Deluxe, as it seems to be more readily circulated and thus easier for WB to have grabbed hold of at this point (or, alternatively, these unreleased songs may have been leaking out in the other direction from WB A&R/Archives cassettes to the more well connected). That version appears to have Eric Leeds, or Eddie M, sax on it.

The QL 'leak' has a WDC-type drum program, and a healthy amount of post-Parade era production throughout, which suggests that it is the 1986 version, and also built from the 1984 tracks. Overall it sounds remotely like a distant cousin of 'Sister Fate' or 'Romance 1600', which may be why he dusted it off for the third Sheila E album.

From what I heard it's the 84 version which will be on PR Deluxe....only 1 month or so from now to get the true answer!

Happy to help you out Romeoblu. The version on the upcoming CD is more than likely the version that was recorded on February 27, 1984. The running time for that version is approx. 5 mins. long, which matches the TRT that has been published for the PR deluxe set.

The version that was recorded on March 25/26, 1986 was largely overseen by Sheila E. and is an entirely different song. The lyrics talk about "love and sex, an emotional merry go round, it's like riding on a ferris wheel upside down..." which are completely different from the song that Prince recorded. In addition, the running time for Sheila's song is about 4:17.

The 1984 version is an amazing tune which sounds very much like James Brown. It might not have fit on PR, but I'm glad it is getting released.

I hope that explains that a little bit.

(and I'm like you, I can't wait to hear the Deluxe CD)

You can Listen to an excerpt of one of Questlove's dance mixes featuring 'Love and Sex' through a rather simple search. I implore you to draw your own conclusions from it.

Thanks for your info. I wasn't expecting a James Brown like song, but that's no bad thing. I was hoping the version of Possessed was closer to the James Brown like live version.

I completely agree with Imprimis on this. Find it out there (it does exist with a little investigation) and you'll hear the 1984 version pretty much as it was recorded and as it is likely to be released on the upcoming PR deluxe CD. It is a little tough to hear with the crowd noise and other interference, but that is the 1984 version.

I am fairly sure that the version that Sheila E. oversaw hasn't been played publicly in this way and it is definitely a different track than the 1984 song.

Two very different songs that just happen to share the same title.

Hopefully Sheila's will be released one day as well, but I don't know how much Prince had to do with the initial recording of that one.

Again, I suggest you do what Imprimis suggests and find it out there to hear it. It is a great song and deserves to be heard.

I heard the 84 version one time and loved it. Driving Linn beat, and aggressive, gritty vocal. One of the main lyrics I think was, "Shine a light, shine it on..." Could be wrong about that because it was a loud club atmosphere.

Some1 described the song as a JBrown funky style song....now I read ur comment and other one from some1 who heard the song last year.....this is not a funky song ....a song with anger raw and dirty ..kind of song that I appreciate a lot !

It is a nonsense phrase he keeps using in it. "Sha-la-la-la, Sha-la-la-boom"

The James Brown reference is more about the call and response and screams. The riff is cool and he and the band are in the pocket completely on this. It is infectious and a solid jam. To me, it sounds like a live performance in many ways and you can tell how happy he was doing it. I don't know how to explain it except it is a very fun song. One of my favorite outtakes and I'm really excited that it is getting an official release.

Details from the recording session are in my upcoming book.
