Joni Mitchell influence

It is o secret that Prince loved Joni Mitchell. I am discovering her music beyond the exceptional but we'll known Blue.there is a song called Down to You on Court and Spark that I can tell Prince must have loved. The spirit of Prince most quirky works are seeded here. I would have loved to have heard him do this one.

I have been listening to Joni all morning. She considers herself a painter first and you can tell that in her music...she paints a story with words ...a lot of times there is no distinguishable chorus as in " Coyote" Her former lover Graham Nash consideres her a musical genius and even said she went to sleep at 10 in the morning and woke at 5 PM and started to create all night long ..sound familiar...and yes I do hear how Prince was influenced by her

Down to You is the song that hit me hard after Prince passed when I avoided listening to his music. It was like listening to a message to Prince, but also like a Parade outtake.

.

Her inspiration is heard on the earliest Prince albums and demos to that last, like the foundation to most of the music.

Funny this topic comes up. I've had Joni on rotation pretty heavy lately.

One Night Alone (the studio rarity, but I found a ones and zeros version out there) is super like Blue or Ladies of the Canyon and even Court and Spark before that one gets weird.

Interesting note, I have the reel-to-reel of Blue. and Side 1 is Side 2 and vice versa. So it starts out with California and ends with Blue. Same order otherwise. Listened to it like that for months. Imagine starting out Dirty Mind on Side B?

That is funny.

I just got Ladies of the Canyon and Hissing. I am just now getting into them. Court and Spark and Blue are just super albums.

I don't know how to put my finger on it but there is some very odd idiosyncratic stuff in Joni's music that Prince caught. Somehow that 'oddness' was filtered into Prince's stuff but, it's not a copy...it's just an influence that only those that love Joni and Prince could tell...do you know what I mean?

I always wondered why Prince covered just that one song (A Case of you) when there were so many similar and great songs to choose. As i said, I'd have paid a pretty penny to hear him do Down To You.

As a Canadian, i always wished to hear him sing the whole song...especially the part....Oh Canada......aaaaaahhhhhh!!!

Prince played it (Blue Motel Room) on piano during the Nude tour (London). Unfortunately, the recording is poor quality.

His band also played it at the Le New Morning show in 2010, although it's not Prince singing, it's a woman (Shelby maybe, not really sure.)
