His point about those who confuse what they beLIEve with TRUTH is one I agree with. Huge problem. For all things, Prince-related or otherwise.

The article certainly reads like a book written out of love and respect. Let's hope thats the case.

I for one do not "get" this possessive fandom from some Prince fans. I am a big fan myself, and have been for decades; I recall in past threads that I have questioned why some people want to keep Prince to themselves. He (Prince) ALWAYS put out the vibe that music is the great healer, the great unifier - for everyone, not a select few.

Seems like it will be a great book.

I'm reading the book at the moment and have almost finished it (about to start the final chapter.) It's OK, but I'm a little disappointed with it if I'm honest. The approach is good - each chapter covers a theme, such as religion in his music, or politics, or his feelings on the internet etc. - and it feels almost like a collection of essays rather than a biography, as it focuses on the music rather than the man. As you'd expect there are mistakes, such as urban legends being treated as fact (says his & Mayte's son was called Boy Gregory, but we know that's not the case), a few typos, and lots of the author's personal opinion again being put across as fact - this is his best album, this is his worst song, etc. - and lots of these will raise the hackles of certain readers (example - the author apparently thought the Lovesexy tour wasn't very good). It's worth a look, and it's a damn sight better than Matt Thorne's book, but I expected more from this one. 3 out of 5 from me.

Plenty of it is Greenman showing off his "look at me dragging in other literary works to prove I've read a bunch of difficult books", combined with a bunch of bland, superficial information you shoudl already know and an increasing amount of serious errors. The book's chapters also seem to have been re-arranged at a fairly late stage, causing him to casually mention some references which don't get explained until much later.

Quite frankly, it's a waste of time unless you want to read a pretentious dude show off his skills while having not that interesting opinions about Prince's music. Save your money and time for worthwhile efforts, like Duane Tudahl's upcoming book about the Purple Rain era studio sessions.
