Prince's Daffiest Song? God or Temptation? Or The Wedding Feast??

God is so rediculous I laugh out loud when he says at
the end, "Come on children, dance the dance electric!".

But Temptation is so insane and crazy too, LOL.

The beginning opening of God should have ended his career.

And yet, on the other hand, the instrumental version is sublime.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I recently stated that "God" is just cringe-worthy, both versions for different reasons.

I can only view "Wedding Feast" as a note of humor.

The tag ending on "Temptation" is what's daffy. It should have ended as it did originally. That ridiculous ending dialog is corny as fuck. His whimpering and yelping gives me question as to Mariah's pregnant-cooing ad-libs inspiration. He'd have done better to put any other song on there to fill another 3 minutes on that record.

"Graffiti Bridge" is .......UGG.

Other daft songs include but aren't limited to:

Lemon Crush

Jughead

Arrogance

Shy (yep, I said it, it's a shit song and corny; eat me)

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Those are not daffy either but no different then "Love Won't Let Me Wait" or "You Sure Love To Ball" very 1970s soul ballad.

"Temptation" is terrible.

I remember a review of ATWIAD where the critic said "most of these songs sound like bad acid trips".That's how I feel about "Temptation",lol.

I assure you we DO understand Prince's music and Temptation IS an overwrought, daffy mess of a song.

Temptation is great.
I can't even listen to The Wedding Feast, same goes for The Holy River.
Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...
Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

I didnt imply they were daffy. I implied that Prince had a way with end songs and dramatics, so Temptation was just part of that lineage if they didnt know any better.

Geezus

What does 'daffy' mean? Is it a made-up word for "daft"?

You don't get the good vs bad, moral/immoral, spiritually vs sexuality. Because that song is the beginning of that theme in his music.

Purple & Gold is "Absolute Daft". Void of all other adjectives. There can be none dafter. It is so daft that is absorbs the daftness from all other songs.

nod

Temptation is a masterpiece, and so is God, pardon me, Gods (vocal and instrumental).

As for "Wedding Feast", like the poor "Jughead", it is victim of people with little humour who don't get a song can be pure comedy. They rant like they've been ripped off a guitar solo or somethin'.

Going down that path, "Cloreen Bacon Skin" is a turd, and so are the Exodus segues.
Except all are funny as hell.

I would say the duality theme started with "Controversy" the song.

Funny trivia: on 1999, God opens the album by saying "Don't worry, I won't hurt you".
Two albums later, the mofo closes the album by castrating SKipper.

Ultimately, it boils down to taste and culture, and I have serious lacks myself, but people not getting "Temptation" did not listen to a lot of Stooges, Captain Beefheart or Janis Joplin. Because they're all squeazed, compressed and digested in this electro-drunk depressing, end-of-the-world psychedelic blues masterpiece. Just when you think it can't get any better, there comes an ethereal break that Massive Attack can only dream of. Those subtle modulations! Those flute synths! The demented sax! Prince vs. God! What more do you want? It screams "genius" from the very beginning (the cartoon intro) to the very end (the quickest fade-out ever committed to console).

I actually love God (the Dance Electric)

some of the wailing could have been cut out, but over all I appreciate it. the meat of the song is beautiful.

If Temptation was shorter, I could love it more, the tempo makes it feel like it is dragging.

Love Eddie M on sax with Prince's ax though

Tempation live during the Nice 1985 show was hot though

I wish that song was done more on the shows

I love God, whistle shrieks and all. Haunting and touching.

Temptation is Prince wanking himself for eight minutes. It IS an impressive vocal showcase, but man it should've ended shortly after he does the low growl. The last few minutes of the song are deeply awkward.

The problem with the ending of Temptation is that that type of thing can only be cool once: on first listen. After that, you know where it's going and you're just sort of waiting for it to be over. Same thing with Orgasm.

Anyway, Purple and Gold takes this cake. lol

GOD is a brilliant song - the vocals, the musical arrangement, the mood - love it. Temptation is a another interesting song, especially the ending. Wedding Feast is a fun interlude within a serious album. I appreciate all of them.

The aspect of Prince that I admired the most was that, for the most part, I don't think he really cared whether people liked or understood his music - It was more about what the music meant to him personally and feeling that inspired the song in the first place - and if other people liked it, well, that was okay too.

Prince knew that some would be too daft to understand.

Daffy songs are songs like Purple & Gold, Jughead, Graffiti Bridge, Courtin' Time, Everybody Loves Me, etc...
