I thought she was sexy as fuck, she did the whole prince type stuff during shows too, bringing men up on the stage and rubbing on them. I still remember other kids saying she was ugly though, she wasn't no vanity but yes, real talent. I am most impressed how much improved she was as a singer by her third album, she was great by that point but the miinneapolis sound was a passe thing by that point. Prince had his moment to be a berry gordy figure with spin off acts and it didn't last long.

But the Glamorous Life was perfect with Sheila E and Prince as is. It is still 'purple music' and not unreleted to Prince.
Just watch the video again. Perfect protege song.
Sheila was is a real musician and well this was just her playing Vanity. Everyone knows Prince wrote the song for Vanity 6.
Sheila did not need to be half naked but Prince was not going to waste it on Apolonnia. I really would have loved to see Vanity do the song. She had all the attitude for it. I never bought Sheila as a sex vixen.
Sheila is still performing showing what a talent she is with her clothes on.

Yep. LOVED it.
I never thought she was ugly. She is far from ugly.
But once she was Prince'd out with lace animal print ruffled shirts and such and hair on 1 side swept back it was on.
That 3rd album still had a strong Minni sound via Purple Music. Which I would say are 1/2 the songs like Koo Koo Boys Club HonE Man Love on a Blue Train OneDayI'mGonnaMakeUMine the other songs have a very 1986 popular radio feel.

it really wasn't the vintage minne sound that we know, it did sound current and perfect for radio, who knows why it didn't hit. the Pride and the passion should have been a big hit in my opinion. |

Would have been a great track on the Apollonia 6 album. Nex to Sex Shooter or even a replacement of it. Could also replace Happy Birthday Mr Christian. Would have made that album quite a bit better!
Are you nuts? This piece is phenomenal. You need some decent stereo system, a good pair o'headphones, maybe a Q-tip or something. The production, sound design and overdubs are exceptional on "Happy Birthday", and on "Blue Limousine" as well. Most of the Apollonia 6 album is a feast for the ear (given you don't listen to music through some plastic shitty chip made in Cheapa). Sex Shooter sounds like shit though. Worse, the composition has become senseless.
Whereas TGL doesn't age at all. Must be the cowbell.

A great tune and masterfully produced. Has a Glamorus Life feel to it speaking of a boy and girl falling in love. This time however it is the guy with all the cash and the girl who is the one falling over in love... What went down..I dont wanna say Think this one was also co-produced by Levi. Very underrated along wioth Boys Club. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

no not the synth heavy linn drum sound, but definately purple music via a mix of the 1982-1986 period

.
I finally heard the Prince version and was shocked how good it was without the percussion, but Sheila's percussion does take it to another level. |

I'd love to hear the Prince version. All I have as alternate is a version where Prince can be heard singing with a women, but I can't really tell if it is Apollonia, Jill Jones or Sheila E. What I do know is that I'd love to hear a version with only Prince on lead vocal (and without the sax).
.
Just to rectify some info on this thread. This song was not written for Vanity 6. The lyrics mention the big brown mercedes sedan that Apollonia was driving at the time. It was written for Apollonia 6. And then it was meant, apparently, for Jill Jones and finally it went to Sheila. Paisley Park is in your heart - Love Is Here! |

The Prince version got out a few months ago.
.
It's the same music with sax---minus Sheila's percussion, with Prince on lead.
.
it sounds demo-ish in that the mix is rough.... everything is kinda turned up and the LinnDrumm doesn't have the final effexts on it.
.
but all the little flourishes of the synths and guitars are in there.

Man I love that sound! Sometimes I think I don't want to hear everything in pristine sound or perfect quality. There's a je-ne-sais-quoi in the murkiness of a bootlegged 10th generation K7... "There's Others Here With Us" through a tape hiss, and foggy trebles, in the dark, you shit your pants on the spot. "Joy In Repetition" sounds great "badly" bootlegged. More like a Stooges blues or something.

That real cello riffing in the intro. that's brilliant.
And the use of silence! The stop-and-gos. The progression closing the chorus. This is pop music heightened to true artistic levels. Which basically resumes Prince's work.
This is one of many productions where Prince overdubs the Linn with his mouth. I wish there was a record of Prince beatboxing only. One very overlooked aspect of Prince's genius is how he finely tunes the percussive sounds. Everything is tuned to perfection in TGL. It's an atmosphere.
What a fabulous instrumental coda. That human voice sounding synth bass arpeggios at the very end! How does he do that?
Notice the double kick part: it's exactly the same rythmic figure that's played on the low toms at the end of "Sign 'O' The Times". Could it be the same part sampled and processed? It goes up and down just like in SOTT. [Edited 5/18/17 6:23am] The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter

The Glamorous Life literally changed my life from the moment I first saw the video in May of 1984. It's everything, from the Linn drum beats to the sax and cello, but above all the percussion! So that is why Prince's solo version pales in comparison, it's the damn cowbells man!
