Project: Learn to play Prince guitar

Dear Purple Family,

I have finally recovered my access to email and this Forum. Happy to be back smile))

Recently I have contacted with one of the best guitar tuitors in US (lets call him AA at this point of time, but he is famous and produced several great instructional guitar DVDs).

I asked him to transcribe portion of Billy's Sunglasses long track, specifically - part where Prince is jamming "Strange relationship".

Plus as a personal request I also asked him to shoot a short video to show exact fingering on the neck.

The results are really good and I am happy with it.

Which turned me to the idea of taking all the necessary steps to produce special video:

  • most challenging and famous guitar riffs of Purple genius
  • note-for-note playing demonstrated by [Anonymized] guitar magazine editor and instructor AA
  • multi-angled close-up shot of every riff both for right and left hand
  • format: DVD or online-streaming

Let`s put aside legal question re Paisley Park Estate / WB rights - it would be figured out on later stage.

What I kindly ask all of you is to help me with getting answer for the following questions:

1) Is there any interest from org and demand (i.e. # of orders that would be done)

2) what should be the tracking list? My suggestion for the first run would be the following:

DVD 1

  • Purple Rain
  • Little Red Corvette
  • When doves cry
  • She`s always in my hear
  • Empty room (Manchester live)
  • The Question of U
  • I`m yours

DVD 2

  • When I lay my hands on you (Montreux 2009 version)
  • Sign of the times
  • Kiss
  • Let`s go crazy
  • Bambi
  • 1999
  • Prince and the band (acoustic jam from Detroit 2004)

All your contributions and suggestions are wellcomed. After detailed discussion I would take time to get costs of producing the video and other related things (including financing).

This could be a great tribute to Prince and making guitar even more popular.

Not intention to make a fortune on this - just need your help to make this happen smile)

Denys

P.S. Dear admins, could you be so kind to make this point sticky. Thanks in advance

prince

It's a good idea. I'd suggest:

Forever in My Life from the 4 Those Of U On Valium boot

Dreamer from Montreux 2013

I wholeheartedly support this idea and would gladly contribute to any kind of gofundme type thing to help fund this.

I would say there's little point in including Purple Rain, Doves Cry, 1999, Kiss, Lets Go Crazy... these songs are all tabbed out professionally and available to buy already.

Make it for the fans, no need to include the big hits to draw in casual fans, the only people interested in something like this would be the hardcore fanbase anyway.

Pick songs with awesome guitar parts. I think something like this would be really cool:

Let's Go Crazy Reloaded (3rdeyegirl version)
Something In The Water (3rdeyegirl version)
Crimson & Clover
Forever In My Life live
Superfunkycalifragasexy
She Spoke 2 Me Montreux live
Anotherlove
DMSR (Musicology tour)
Come On (1998 Beautiful Strange performance)
Irresistible Bitch live Syracuse

I love this idea, but think the tracklisting looks a bit dull.

It's a good idea, but I don't think it can be successfully done. Sure you can germs a version of what someone thinks, but it goes from stupid easy to wtf in a millisecond. Do you know how many Lets Go Crazy Videos I've seen and as far as I can tell only one was correct and I'm only talking about two chords! I think Prince didn't worry much about transcription, he just used whatever odd thing to get from piano to guitar.

Even with your caveat about not dealing with the legal issue Paisley/WB, you're putting the horse before the cart.

My studio Instagram page was shut down in 2016 for me just being a fan and playing Prince riffs. Mind you, not teaching them, not making money, just "Hey, this is a cool solo from "that prince song" that I love" and I was slapped with a copyright infringement. They found 3 on the page and shut it down.

The claimant email looked Sketchy AF (npgrecords2@gmail.com) Seriously, his camp used gmail? I've also included the link to the screen capture on the one that really pissed me off. Dweezil Zappa had actually liked that video on IG, so I lost the video, IG account and a Dweezil thumbs up.

Anyway, if you are in any way serious about this project at a distribution level, and not just a personal "I want to learn how to play like Prince", I really believe you should get the funding squared away and approach Paisley/WB with a serious proposal.

Now, with that said, I'll play along nicely wink

I think it would be better suited to cover Princes rhythm style on one DVD, his Lead on the second and perhaps his rig on a third DVD (effect chains/amps/settings/etc.)

The reason why is his rhythm guitar is incredible and a little different than most would play. For example, I've never seen Prince play a barre chord like most guitar methods show you how. He is a thumb player that really aids in muting the strings for the chicken scratch parts.

So for me....

DVD 1 - Rhythm (covers his Funky, Rock and Acoustic styles)

1. I wanna be your lover

2. When you were mine

3. Bambi

4. 1999

5. Controversy

6. Alphabet St. (triads!)

7. Let's Go Crazy

8. Purple Rain (correct chords)

9. The Cross

10. Reflection

DVD 2 - Lead

1. I'm Yours

2. Why you wanna treat me so bad

3. Little Red Corvette

4. Free

5. Let's Go Crazy

6. Purple Rain

7. The Question of U

8. The Cross (SoT movie solo)

9. The Morning Papers

10. Gold

11. Bonus track - the full, like 18 chorus solo from Just my Imagination aftershow boot.

You can get professional tab for most of those songs online, on sites like sheetmusicdirect.com or even in The Very Best of Prince tab book, so what's the point?

Either do the deep cuts or go home imo.
